A few years back, I worked as a solo marketer for a fledgling startup.

You know the score: 2-3 clients; almost 0 marketing budget.

Over the course of a year, we attempted everything from ad campaigns to outbound sales.

Nothing worked 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭. Nothing became "repeatable".

Until...SEO.

In 12 months, I wrote ~50 blog posts & landing pages:

• I found the keywords
• I wrote the content/copy
• I built the pages in Webflow

Each targeted a low volume keyword. But they were highly specific to us.

We probably only grew to ~5,000 monthly visitors in 9 months.

Yet, bit by bit, sales requests began to flow to us:

Month 1: 0 demo requests
Month 2: 1 demo requests
Month 3: 2 demo requests
Month 4: 3 demo requests

We eventually hit 8 inbound demo requests every single month.

(They were from some of the coolest brands and closed at a 25-50% rate.)

We'd only need ~20 to close to hit $1M ARR. 

We did it.

And the cost?

Nothing but:

• Time & energy
• An Ahrefs subscription

This is why I love SEO.

It's the "everyman" marketing channel.

There's zero barriers to getting out there and hustling a win.

In the years since, I've bounced from startup to startup, client to client.

I've honed my SEO strategy: 

Experimented. Redesigned. Systemised.

And I've paired it with my (some would say unhealthy) obsession with human-centred, original content that stands out.

Now?

Meet Victoria Landsmann

She’s the anchor of the SEO team, she makes sure that sh*t gets done, every month, on schedule.

She’s the engine to our coffee train.

She also puts us all to shame in Barre class.

My favorite quality of hers, which I think high tech lacks so much is empathy.

It’s the ability to hear you, and validate what you’re going through.

She’s always there, she listens, she makes you feel that she’s always on your team. Even when you create extra work for her with your ridiculous SEO briefs, filled with pizza emojis 🍕🍕🍕, and instructions to writers that read like a Nike ad “go get them tiger!” and “Make this article your playground”.

And although she’s a part of some secretive content guild where their ceremonies include activities surrounding em dashes, and 6 hour messaging workshops, I consider her more than a colleague, but a friend.
