Can I be honest with you?

I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to be, growing up.

I was the quiet kid who felt small in loud rooms. Teased. Left out.

Nobody likes being sold to immediately.

And if that's your LinkedIn strategy, you better stop now.

I see it in my DMs every single day.

"Hey Ben, want to double your AUM in 90 days?"
"Looking for more qualified leads?"
"Let me show you our proven system."

Delete. Delete. Delete.

Why?

If you're only DMing people on LinkedIn to pitch your offer, 
you're not building relationships. 

→ You're burning bridges before they're even built.

And for financial advisors? 

This approach will kill your credibility faster than anything else.

Your clients don't buy financial products. 

→They buy trust.
→ They buy confidence that you'll protect their family's future.
→ They buy the belief that you genuinely care about their goals, not just your commission.

When your first interaction is a sales pitch,
It's like you've told them: 
"I don't care about you. I care about what you can do for me."

And in an industry built on trust and long-term relationships? 

That's the fastest way to lose before you even start.

Here's what YOU can do instead:

1) Start with curiosity, not a pitch.

When someone accepts your connection request, 
don't immediately go for the close.

Instead, ask a thoughtful question.

Example:
"I saw you just celebrated 10 years in the industry, what's the biggest shift you've seen in how clients make decisions?"

Show them you're interested in them, not just their wallet.

2) Comment before you DM.

Engage with their content first. 
Add value to their audience.

When you eventually message them, you're not a stranger,
you're someone who already showed up.

3) Share value first.

Lead with something useful:
→ A relevant article
→ A strategy that worked for you
→ A genuine compliment on their post

No pitch. No agenda. Just value.

4) Play the long game.

My best clients didn't come from cold pitches.

They came from months of genuine interaction. 
→ Commenting, sharing insights, offering help with no strings attached.

When they were ready to buy, 
my name already had a place in their mind.

I stopped asking, 
"How can I sell to this person?"

And started asking, 
"How can I serve this person?"

That turned LinkedIn from a cold-calling platform into a relationship-building machine.

Stop selling. 
Start serving. 
And the clients will follow.

DPM Gan warns - "Singapore faces an existential challenge" 

Yep, but it's probably not what he and his colleagues think.

Last year, I met my university friend for dinner. We caught up over work, life, passion, marriage and of course the inevitable...

"Are you both planning to start a family?' 

She told me with a meek smile,

"We are quite happy where we are. We're going to be DINKs" 
(Dual Income, No Kids)

Then came her plans about upcoming road trips, side hustles, passion projects, giving to charity and more.

There was nothing but genuine ease and joy from her. 

Being on the other side of the fence with a toddler, I told her I was happy too for both her and her spouse.

Because nothing's worse than bringing a newborn into this world out of pressure or duty, instead of love. 

She then told me, their decision was not a flippant one.

They both asked themselves some "hard questions":

 → Can we afford to raise a child given the costs of living? 
 → Are our career future resilient to ensure we can put food on the table?
 → Do we want to belabour our parents and make them caregivers again? Or get a stay-in helper as we don't want to compromise our careers?
 → Why do we want to put a newborn through the whole Singapore "rat race" again after all we've gone through?
 → Is Singapore truly... liveable? Can we trust the government to ensure we are taken care of in a world of flux and irrationality? 

Obviously, some may think these questions are just symptoms of "over-thinking".
When our parents got by with 2, 3 or 4 children, they still made it work, right? Why not you? 

But... at what expense? And it's palpable how life in Singapore has dramatically changed from its times in the 90s to now. 

These thoughts have been shared quite commonly among my friends in their late 20s and 30s. 

Interestingly, they are brilliant individuals, highly socio-economically mobile and with amazing careers and life trajectories. 

The birth rate decline in Singapore is indeed an existential challenge to our country's future. 

But also, maybe our ways and means of "existence" in this country are also fraying and being questioned (healthily)? 

Do we just want to exist and get by? 
(Because if that's the assumption, then throwing $10,000 grants to have people make more babies or CDC vouchers may just work in the sort-term.)

And what does it take for us to truly thrive and flourish in the next decades of Singapore? 

Perhaps we need to answer the harder questions and look at the "elephant in the room".

P.s. I don't have the answers or sit on a committee so I'm just off to sit the train and explore Singapore with my kiddo.

Everyone says "engage your audience" when you're speaking on stage.

But nobody really tells you how to own that stage and make it yours.

As someone who used to shake before every presentation,
I've learned a few things the hard way.

Things that turned that fear into something I could actually use.

Here it is.

1/ Ride on Shared Narratives
→ Find common ground fast.

People don't connect with perfection.
They connect with "me too" moments.

👉🏻 I like to open with a story about struggling with something my audience faces too.
👉🏻 Like feeling invisible in a crowded room or doubting whether anyone's listening.

2/ Keep the Energy Up
→ Your energy sets the room's energy.

If you're flat, they're flat.
If you're alive, they lean in.

👉🏻 I move around the stage, vary my tone, and throw in pauses.
👉🏻 It keeps people awake and engaged, even in long sessions.

3/ Speak with Them Before You Speak to Them
→ A little interaction beforehand goes a long way.

I used to hide backstage.
Now I walk the room early.

👉🏻 Before I present, I chat with a few people in the audience, ask about their day, their challenges.
👉🏻 So when I'm on stage, I'm speaking to familiar faces.

4/ Don't Skimp on Preparation
→ Being prepared is your best defense against nerves.

I used to wing it.
I paid for it every time.

👉🏻 I rehearse my opening and closing until I can say them in my sleep.
👉🏻 It gives me confidence even when my mind goes blank mid-speech.

5/ Learn Their World, Speak Their Language
→ Tailor your message to resonate.

Generic talks don't land.
Personalized ones do.

👉🏻 When I speak to financial advisors versus tech founders, I adjust my examples and references to match their daily reality.
👉🏻 Never use a one-size-fits-all script.

6/ Use Your Stories
→ Personal stories make your message unforgettable.

Facts inform.
Stories transform.

👉🏻 Instead of listing my credentials, I share how a kid who got bullied and avoided stages now trains leaders across Asia.
👉🏻 Story sticks more than any resume.

7/ Mirror What You Want to See
→ Project the confidence you want your audience to feel.

If you're uncertain, they'll be uncertain.
If you're grounded, they'll trust you.

👉🏻 If I want my audience to feel calm and confident, I start by being calm and confident myself
👉🏻 Even if I'm nervous inside.

I'm not a natural speaker.

I'm someone who learned through repetition, failure, and intention.

If you apply even one of these,
you'll already be ahead of most people on stage.

You don't need perfect English.
You don't need years of experience.
You just need presence, preparation, and a message that matters.

Nobody is thinking about you.

Formal education won't keep you relevant in this new economy.

I know that sounds harsh. But hear me out.

In 2012, I graduated with an Accounting degree and a poor GPA.

By 2014, I quit my job to become a full-time speaker and coach.

No corporate experience.
No powerful connections. 
A $15 daily budget for food and transport. 

Everyone thought I was crazy.

Fast forward to today:
I've taught over 65,000 leaders across 20+ cities and built a multi-million dollar brand. 

And in all those years?

Not a single client has ever asked about my degree.
Not my university. Not my GPA. Not my certifications.

Yet, I keep hearing the same questions from people I mentor.

"Ben, what degree should I get first?" 
"Will people take me seriously without certifications?" 
"Which program should I join to get paid work?"

I get it.  

It's how most of us were taught to think.

Study hard → Get the paper → Get the job.

But in this economy?

→ Storytelling, branding, content strategy... none of these were taught in school. 
→ I learned them by doing the work and failing publicly. 

🔥 Let your clients' results speak for you.

→ When your clients win, you never have to sell yourself again. 

🔥 Invest in mentorship over material things. 
→ While my peers bought cars and watches, I invested in mentors.

→ You don't need a big team. You need resourcefulness.

Formal education builds foundations. I'm grateful for mine.

But another piece of paper alone won't convince someone to hand you their money.

Stop collecting certificates.
Start creating proof.

I used to struggle with self-esteem and couldn't even look people in the eye.

But people still say: "You're a natural speaker."


Here's what they don't see.

The kid who got pushed around.
The teenager who ate lunch alone.
The young adult who rehearsed conversations in his head before speaking.

That was me.

For a decade, I believed I wasn't meant to be seen or heard.

Your depth.

You don't need to master all 4 at once.

You just need to start with one.

I see more "fun-employed(s)" on Tiktok these days.

But this got me curious.

"Funemployment" refers to a period of unemployment where individuals, often Gen Z or young professionals choose to enjoy their free time, focusing on self-discovery, travel, hobbies, and wellness rather than immediately rushing into a new job.

My generation calls it.. sabbatical and time for myself and the family, right? 

My parents would call it... retrenchment and depression?

P.s. In case you don't get it at first - 'funemployment' is a composite of 'fun' and 'unemployment'

Nobody cares about your success if they don't know your struggle.

Sounds harsh? 

Here's what most people get wrong about sharing their story:
👉🏻 They only show the highlight reel.

The wins. 
The stage. 
The applause.

But here's the thing.

When people only see the "good," 
they think, "Must be nice for you."

When they see the gap between where you were and where you are now?

💡 That's when they lean in.

That's when they say, 
"If you made it, maybe I can too."

That's not just storytelling. 
→ That's inspiration.

And inspiration only works when there's contrast.

Good vs. not so good. 
Pain vs. where you are today. 
Rock bottom vs. standing tall.

Yet most of us skip the hard part.

We never sit down to map out what we actually went through.

We don't spend the time to reflect, to connect the dots, 
to understand why our past matters for the people in front of us right now.

Your present impresses. 

But your past and your future? 
They inspire.

So stop hiding the messy chapters.

They might be the very thing someone else needs to hear.

 is mainly derived from the 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻."

I’ve made it a habit to learn through self-reflection. 🧠
How can I sharpen my own skills?
How can I support my team better?
How can I serve better?

And there is no better time than travelling,
which gives me the space to think. ✈️🌍

I do read as well 📖

Articles, commentaries, and long-reads,
squeezed into short pockets of time.

Knowledge helps me to hold conversations,
and 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

And then there’s social media 👀

This skill didn’t come naturally. 😅

I’m not someone who enjoys taking photos,
being loud, or putting myself front and centre.

It felt like all eyes are on me,
like cameras on the lions yesterday during Lion dance for CNY celebrations. 😂

But through guidance from Benjamin Loh, 
I’ve realised visibility doesn’t have to be loud.

It can be thoughtful and intentional.

𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

Even though I just “started” out social media in the past 3 months,
we’ve successfully onboarded a new FA manager and 3 of his consultants.

That said, I can still be awkward..
 Still very much a work in progress😄
But learning, nonetheless.

Over time, a few patterns have stayed with me:
📝 Being busy doesn’t remove the need to learn, it raises the stakes
📝 Reflection turns experience into insight
📝 The better I want to serve, the more intentional I must be about growing
