The founder who couldn't leave.

Greg ran a 200-person systems integration company. Strong product, solid relationships, real revenue, a team he trusted.

I appreciate your visit to my profile. As I think of the most important reflections to share with you from what I've learned in my life, it would begin with having several businesses throughout my career, including one devastating failure that led me to declare bankruptcy. 

The reflections on that bankruptcy would be the basis of the next stage of success-- in every way-- emotionally, financially-- it was the learning tool that outperformed any other available path of learning.

What I found was the key to success was to identify my subconscious habits of thinking, which are stored in my neural pathways.

I learned that, on our own, habits of thinking are quite often hard to identify and investigate.  It is difficult to determine if they were working for me or not.  I learned by studying neuroscience how to change them.

This is harder than it seems, (which is why I now coach people around this material, which I am deeply, deeply, passionate about).

The difficulty in changing habits of thinking is also related to this fundamental insight. We can't do what we are often taught to do-- fight our brains, to change our outcomes.  We have to work with our brains to change our outcomes.  That means we have to understand how our brains work.

Our brain is a predictive tool, and when a habit of thinking, stored in a neural pathway is triggered, it quickly gives us a subconscious "tsunami-like "response of memorized emotions that pummel us and drive our personality, impact our behaviors, actions, and ultimately impacts our results.

That is why so many of us stand on our beaches of resolve at 7 am (no binge eating, impatience, self-sacrificing, no net surfing, etc.), and by 9 pm, we can find ourselves mentally drained and frustrated, beating ourselves up, hanging on a "coconut tree" with chips in our hands, and saying yes to three more things in an already crazy life. 

True self-development and sustained change only happen when we can identify our habits of thinking when triggered, and then implement the principles and processes that result in the brain creating a new neural pathway and clipping off the old one.

This is one of the deepest passions of my life.  For my clients, it means, in a single word: hope.

We often think we are destined for the lives we currently live in--we aren't.  We are destined for the lives we create behaviors for.  And behavior is in our control.

I have a friend who has frustrated his business, his family, and his colleagues by speaking in conclusions: This is the way to... I am right that... and their frustration has led to isolation in several contexts which are highly emotional to him. 

Growing up his intelligence and forthrightness was needed in a family where they avoided major difficult conversations, someone had to say something, it was him. It became his identity-- now he does it everywhere and it often makes people angry.
  
As I listened, I thought about the way trainers control elephants.

When the elephant is young, they tie a thick rope around its leg. The elephant pulls, strains, and fights to break free. But it cannot.

After enough failed attempts, the elephant learns something dangerous:

“This rope is stronger than I am.”

Later, the trainer no longer needs the thick rope. A much smaller rope will do. One that the elephant could snap in a second.

But it doesn’t.

Not because the rope is still strong. Because the memory is.

And it seems to me that this is how many of us, me included, have often lived.

We are no longer just dealing with what happened to us.
We are living inside the meaning we gave to what happened to us.

My friend was convinced that his ability to get things done, to bark orders, was a necessary thing. This was the thick rope he put around his own leg. As he survived that silent, difficult, conversation-less family, he doesn't need to be quite so tied to that identity.
  
But he is.

I've seen this in my own life:  

Betrayal is real. So are loss, rejection, humiliation, disappointment, and trauma.

But over time, pain does more than hurt us. It trains us.

For me, and for people like me, it trained me to expect less, trust less, hope less, and risk less.

And before long, we no longer react to the rope. We are partnering with the story the rope created.

That is where so many high-capacity people get stuck.

Not because we are weak or want to stay miserable.

We get stuck because the identity formed in pain now feels familiar and safe, even when it is quietly stealing our freedom, relationships, joy, and our future.

So, the deeper question is not just: What happened to me?

The deeper question is:

What have I come to believe about myself because of what happened to me?

Because the most subtle prison in our lives is rarely the event itself. It is the identity we built in response to the event.

What happened to us may not have been our choice.

But whether we continue to let it name us, limit us, and narrate our future… that is where freedom is either lost or found.

Some of us do not need a new strategy. We need to break agreement with the old rope.

Because maybe the rope is no longer around our leg. Maybe it is wrapped around our identity.

“Doug, I want to get the mail today.”

My wife Sue has been dealing with pain in her leg and foot. Today it was a little better and she wanted to make the walk.

I was headed back to my office when a quiet thought moved through me, a whisper that didn’t fit in my busy schedule:

“Go with Sue when she gets the mail.”

It wasn’t loud or dramatic, and it certainly wasn’t logical productivity.

It was a whisper.

I paused and in that familiar moment where you decide whether to obey something gentle or bulldoze it with the next task, I stopped.

I turned back and said, “Let me know when you go to the mail. I want to go with you.”

She looked surprised. “Really?” “Yeah,” I smiled. “It’s a date.”

Later, we took our slow 100-foot walk. The wind was a little chilly as she wrapped her arm in mine for support, and we made it to the mailbox.

It was mostly junk mail and slight disappointment. But on the way back, Sue stopped.

The tulips we planted last fall — the ones we forgot about — were coming to life.

So, we stood there another ten minutes, looking at her flower garden, laughing. Me bragging about how well my weeds were growing, and her smiling at the tulips like they were old friends that kept a promise.

I’m back in my office now.

Same chair.

But I’m not the same person. Something has changed. I feel more energy. More present. More… human.

And another whisper keeps circling inside my mind:

“Doug, you listened. That was joy. I’ll send you more whispers.”

After 47 years of marriage, here’s something I’ve learned the hard way:

Whispers require a special kind of listening and a willingness to act.

Yet it strikes me that the “Noise of Busy “always argues for urgency, important, distracted, and eventually we can end up numb and distant, and not hearing.

But whispers, they do something else if we hear them and act. They reconnect us, lift us, fill us!

They remind us of what we’re actually building — not just a business, not just a schedule… but a life where our families feel chosen, safe, and they still matter more than the to-do list.

And our businesses?

We show up clearer and lead less from pressure, making better decisions with more wisdom than adrenaline.

And perhaps, even more important, we stop trading our joy for “getting ahead.”

Because a moment of presence doesn’t just bless the person in front of you…It recalibrates the leader inside of you.

I expect the world will always offer louder, more urgent and important things.
But the best parts of life rarely shout.

They whisper.

So today I’m choosing a different kind of success by asking:

Who can I serve today? Put them in my path — and I will serve them.
