Caring for a loved one with Dementia is anything but easy. The uncertainty and stress often feels overwhelming.

Working in the ER for almost a decade has taught me there isn't enough time spent ahead of a crisis in defining peoples' goals of care or what quality of life means to them. 

Healthcare traditionally waits until people are critically ill. We then ask people to think about the future. 
This is a mistake.

I believe in a better alternative which is to teach people, and those speaking for them, the treatment options of the conditions they are most likely to face. 

Your past and current medical history is a gateway into your future health risk.

In the ER we analyze risk factors, choose a way to work up the chief complaint based on risk, and then present treatment options to the patient or their caregiver with any data collected. 

It’s an oversimplification, but that’s my job in a nutshell.

When we teach people open to learning the care options they will have ahead of a crisis, it empowers them to make their own health care choices. 

When I treat people who are clear on their overall goals and understand the treatment options, everything goes smoother. The ER is not a good place to decide what matters most to you. 

People living with dementia rely on their caregivers to speak for them. 
They deserve to have the care they would choose for themselves if their brains were healthy and they could learn what their caregivers can.
I help provide the knowledge caregivers need to make that happen.

□  Able to work in a fast-paced environment while providing quality service to customers in a retail setting. 
□ Counseled all patients for OTC medications while ruling out symptoms that would require a Doctor’s appointment for treatment 
□ Administered all shingles and influenza vaccinations to the Durham community. 
□ Data Entry, physical filling, reconstituting, and selling of prescriptions were daily tasks, along with answering medication questions and advising about common side effects, or severe issues that would warrant an emergency or medical visit.

□	Assisted a colleague in the classification and development of a knock-out plasmid for the mDEA gene in Staphlylococcus Aureus. This gene has recently been discovered and its function focuses on the efflux of important antibiotics such as Fluoroquinolones and Ethidium Bromide. The purpose of our project is to successfully clone this gene into Staph, which has never occurred naturally before, to develop a potential target for antibiotic drug discovery in reducing the gene's function and expression.

□	Under Dr. Todd Auman of the Institute of Pharmacogenomics and Individualized Therapy of UNC, the purpose of our research was to identify what transmutations occurred in strains that lead to disease, so that we can create a pharmacotherapy to combat this. 
□	Involved DNA human assaying and rigorous spreadsheet analysis in determining possible gene mutation loci
□	Required proficiency in Centrifugation, Water baths, and independently formulating lab experiments in DNA sampling
□	Utilized proper laboratory protocol and procedure while conducting experiments, and logged daily activities and observations within a lab manual
□	Colorectal cancer research has done very little in identifying the particular causes for how this disease generates, hence the purpose of my assistance with this research.
