These 6 women didn't wait for a term sheet or a seat at someone else's table. They built their own, and more importantly, they kept every chair.

1: Sara Blakely - Turned $5,000 into Spanx, built a $1.2 billion company, and self-funded it for 21 years. When Blackstone bought it in 2021, she still owned 100%.
Lesson: The money you have is enough to start. The money you make is enough to grow.

2: Mahisha Dellinger: A bank told her no, so she bootstrapped CURLS with $25,000 anyway, a hair care brand for natural curls that industry ignored. Today, it's a $15 million brand sitting in Walmart, Target, and CVS Health.
Lesson: A bank's "no" isn't a verdict. It's a detour to full ownership.

3: Cate Luzio: Self-funded Luminary when everyone told her to raise. Now: 30 countries, 100+ corporate partners, and zero outside capital.
Lesson: People warning you about risk often haven't taken any themselves.

4: Natalia Shahmetova: When VCs wouldn't touch pet tech, she went ahead anyway. Woofz now has 21 million downloads and $20M in annual revenue, built entirely on her own terms.
Lesson: Build where no one's looking. By the time they notice, you're already ahead.

5: Jaclyn Johnson: Bootstrapped Create & Cultivate, sold it for $22 million, then bought it back. All by 35.
Lesson: An exit doesn't have to be the end. If you built it right, you can take it back.

6: ✨Vivian Kaye: She built what the beauty industry wouldn't...products for Black women with curly hair, starting with herself. A college dropout and single mother, she bootstrapped KinkyCurlyYaki to 7 figures.
Lesson: The best products come from founders who needed them first.

We’ve been trained to think that "making it" means someone else validated us with a check.

I have recently started working on a new project to use AI and facial recognition to do early detection of Scleroderma. I was diagnosed with Scleroderma in June 2021. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease in which your body produces extra collagen. You can see the effects of the extra collagen in people's faces and hands. We are building an AI system that uses pictures of people's faces and hands to be able to do early detection of Scleroderma. You can see more at http://scleroderma.ai.

I am a serial entrepreneur with expertise in mobile, BI, OLAP, data access, data analytics, cloud, and Big Data.  Over 20 years, we have built 3 very successful companies both with very positive exits for all of our shareholders.  We have built great teams who have built great products as we focused on making our customers and partners very successful.  We have sold software to great companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, SAP, and Teradata which they in turn have put their own names on and sold to their customers.

One of the best parts of building our companies was growing the people who made the companies what they were.  During my years, we celebrated many successes and I am pleased to see that people who worked with me have gone on to great careers around the world.

Along the way of building great companies, we have also invested back in our community.  We have created over 1500 person years of high paying employment in Vancouver, Canada and also invested heavily in the local universities to educate our leaders of tomorrow.  We have paid special attention to women in technology and have endowed various scholarships at SFU, UBC, and UVIC.

We have also supported the World Partnership Walk, the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, the Aga Khan University, the University of Central Asia, and the Aga Khan Museum.  Giving back to the world in terms of supporting developing countries as well as supporting educational institutions is something that shows Canada cares about the world we all live in.  Additionally, supporting the first museum dedicated solely to Islamic Art in North America helps us all understand different cultures and the value of diversity.
