Bobbi Brown proves the opposite by doing it in her 60s!

This is her story and the proof that it's "Never Too Late."

It all started in 1995 when Bobbi Brown sold Bobbi Brown Cosmetics to Estée Lauder for a reported $74.5 million at age 38 and signed a 25-year non-compete.

It prevented her from:
- launching a new beauty company
- selling makeup under her own name
- using "Bobbi Brown" for any beauty product

In 2016, Bobbi announced her exit from Estée Lauder.
She waited to be legally free and build again (October 2020). Between 2017 and 2020, she built multiple ventures like...

At 60, most people told her to slow down.

She chose to do the opposite and reinvented herself using what she always knew.

I am a long-time Premium Business user.

This platform has been central to my career, my growth, my community, and now as a founder of 2 small businesses.

Since early November, my account has been repeatedly restricted and flagged. 

I don’t use bots.
I don’t use any automation tools.
I’m not part of engagement pods.
And yet, I’m being hit with multiple restrictions and warnings every few days.

I can’t trace back to anything I’ve done.

My support ticket has been open for weeks, and Stewart has tried but we still haven’t resolved the root cause.

Here’s why I’m escalating this:
These restrictions have shut down my primary business channel.
My revenue dropped to ZERO in November and December is heading in the same direction. 💔 

I’m now hesitant to use LinkedIn now from fear....
even message, comment or reply to an in-mail or reach out to my customers because I don’t know what will trigger another restriction.

I want to be clear:
I deeply value LinkedIn and the work being done to keep the platform safe.
But something in the system is hurting a rule-abiding small business founder who depends on this platform to operate.

I’m tagging you both because I’ve run out of paths through regular support channels.

I need help identifying what’s causing this and getting it fixed quickly before my business gets negatively impacted.

The biggest career jump I’ve seen in 2025 started with a woman taking a "step down” after a layoff derailed her goals. 👀 

(This was the best message I got this week. I hope it inspires you)

Mary had spent almost 20 years building her career.
She finally earned a VP of Product role.
And then the company layoffs hit.

At first, she stayed confident.
But even with an impeccable track record… she couldn’t land a job.
For 2.5 years.
She applied to 500+ roles.
Joined every networking and accountability group she could.

But with companies cutting layers in 2024–25…
The ladder she spent two decades climbing simply wasn’t there anymore.

In this market, we can’t think about career the way we did five years ago.
Today, we need to think about building leverage not climbing ladders.

So when a Principal PM role came up, she hesitated.
It meant a huge title drop and a massive pay cut.
After years of working her way to VP… she’d be an IC again. 🫢 

I could see why the decision crushed her.
She told me,
“I’m scared taking this role proves what people always thought… that I was never VP material.”

And a lot of women are being pushed into this exact fear right now.

When we talked, we focused on:
- what would give her leverage long-term
- the mindset and strategies champions use in hard markets

She didn’t take the role as a step down.
She stepped around. Because careers aren’t linear anymore.

And that’s when the real work began.
Inside the company, she looked like every other Principal PM.

1. So we rebuilt her narrative to match how execs think using the language and numbers her SVP and C-level leaders cared about.
2. We upgraded her exec communication.
3. We refined her storytelling.
4. And we engineered sponsors.

Nine months later, her SVP told her they’d never seen a Principal PM operate at this level.
She was promoted to Senior Director with compensation above her former VP role. 🙌 

What looked like a step down became her power move.

My 11-year-old son T asked me a question last year:

I left the office at 4:15 to pick up T, my son and spent the entire evening refreshing Slack like I’d committed a crime. 🤢

- Nobody messaged me.
- Nobody asked anything.
- Nobody even noticed.

But my brain was in overdrive… convinced I’d done something wrong.
Convinced I was a “bad leader” and a "bad mom" to even feel like this.

My husband encouraged me to stop justifying when I had to leave early for school pickups and simply say it as a matter of fact... Just like he has done.

I then realized how common this was in the company.
Every mom in the company did exactly what I was doing.
And every single dad left by giving a single disclaimer:
“Gotta go, I will be offline from x–y today.”
That’s it.

After speaking with hundreds of women inside SheTrailblazes, I can tell you this:

1. The more we justify, the more we invite scrutiny in what we do.
2. The guilt working moms feel has nothing to do with falling behind.
We already know we’re not behind.

Most of us have done more by 2pm than many people do all day. 🤗

The guilt is about being judged.
It’s the fear someone will notice you left.
That you’ll be seen as less committed...
Less serious, less deserving of the seat you earned.

And in all of this, one of the harshest truths I’ve realized is that…

It’s not their voice. It’s the one we were trained to hear.
We’ve internalized decades of “always on” culture so deeply…
We punish ourselves before anyone else even gets the chance.

A few years ago, I again picked up T again early.
We got ice cream and talked about his day.

And nothing at work fell apart.
Was I still feeling anxious? Yes, I was checking my Slack in between. 

But did I feel as guilty as before. NO.

To all the mamas out there… If this sounds familiar to you, I want you know this
Your guilt doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.

Your guilt is proof our hustle culture has trained you to feel wrong...
Simply for having a life. You are an amazing mom and an amazing leader.

I used to get praised in every single job I’ve had.
But the promotions always went to a “Dave” or a “John.” 🤢 

I was seen as someone who was “trusted,” “reliable,” and a “doer.”
So every time something important came up.
My name was first on the list.
Because they knew I’d deliver it well.

For the first few years in my career, being the “workhorse” actually worked.
It got me my first 3 promotions.

By the time I reached Senior Manager levels,
That praise became the very thing that held me back.
I was now the “execution machine.”

So when I brought up promotion, I kept hearing the same thing:
“Bosky, you’re the best. Once you become more strategic, the promotion is all yours.” 💔 

And then, to “support” me, Dave, my peer was assigned as my mentor.
Because he was somehow the strategic one.

Dave was charming. A big talker.
But he handed a lot of his work to his mentees…
80% of whom were women. 

I felt used.
Blindsided.
Invisible.

The hardest part wasn’t hearing the NO’s.
It was realizing I was following every rule…
And somehow it still wasn’t enough.

After 5 promotion denials, I knew something needed to change. 

So I changed how I was managing my career:
1/ Think, operate and speak in the exec language
2/ Go beyond impact. Work commercially (with confidential numbers)
3/ Build 3–5 exec level sponsors across the business

These 3 levers shift how decision makers talk about you in talent reviews.
And that is where promotions actually happen.
And this changed everything for me.

I stopped trying to “speak up more.”
Stopped saying yes to extra work.
Stopped pretending to be extroverted just to fit the mold.

Instead, I started getting invited into the right rooms.
Even during reorgs.
Even with leadership changes.

Eventually, I was promoted to General Manager and Company President.
I was tapped for multiple C-Level roles. 

Since then, I’ve coached 5,000+ women globally rise even when things are stacked against them.

And I promise you: My clients say, they will never go back to the over-delivering, over-working “doer.”

During a crisis, leadership roles still tilt toward men and the psychology behind it is terrifying 👇

Reut Itzkovitch-Malka's 2024 study revealed something that as women we have always felt.

When uncertainty hits, people instinctively default to men as leaders.

None of this happens because of experience or competence or lack of it.
But because stress disrupts the brain’s ability to recognize capability.
And when cortisol spikes, human’s old programming takes over.

Here’s how this shows up for so many women in real life:
1/ A woman can spend years building credibility and results.
2/ And it takes only one crisis for decision-makers forget it in a week.

I hear versions of this every week in tech, finance, education and even government. This happened to me too.

Years ago, I said yes to a crisis assignment that everyone else refused.
I walked in thinking, “If I fix this, people will finally see what I’m capable of.”

But halfway through I realized: I was never meant to succeed. 💔 
I was the scapegoat for a mess that had been brewing long before I showed up.

And when the situation inevitably blew up because it was never salvageable…
A man was immediately brought in as the “steady hand.”

This is when I realized that in a crisis, women don’t become less competent. People simply become worse at seeing competence.

Once you understand that, you start looking at your whole career differently.

Inside SheTrailblazes, we see a pattern consistently:

Women rarely pause to celebrate themselves.

We downplay.

We tell ourselves “it’s not a big deal” and move on to the next thing without taking a breath.

I left my C-level role because I had a front-row seat to a problem no one wanted to admit. 💔 
Wickedly smart women were doing everything right… and still not rising.

Because here’s the truth very few women hear honestly:
Hard work gives you more hard work.
But being seen as a strategic leader?
That requires a completely different set of skills.

The advice that helped early in your career...
 “Speak up more.”
 “Work more.”
 “Be confident.”
 “Find a mentor.”
 “Lean in.”
…has an expiry date.

At senior levels, decisions get made for entirely different reasons.

Executives don’t promote you for doing more.
They promote you when they’re confident you make them look like they made the smartest talent decision of the year.
And that shift requires two things...the two levers I teach over and over:

1. Engineer the right executive sponsors
Not mentors. Not allies. But exec sponsors who stake their political capital to insist on your growth.
You don’t “earn” sponsors by accident.
 You create them through the right conversations at the right altitude.

2. Communicate like someone operating two levels up
Your manager cares about how well you execute.
Executives care about how you think and operate commercially.
When your work reflects this you become sponsorable.

That’s when leaders stop seeing you as the "DOER" and start seeing you as someone who changes the business.

And that is exactly the transformation I’m preparing women for inside the Dec 2nd workshop.

Every day I speak to women who are exhausted from repeating the same year over and over.

Here’s how Lina Khan’s career shows senior women’s unstoppable influence doesn’t require staying in 1 lane:

Lina Khan was born on March 3, 1989, in London. 
Her family moved to the US when she was 11. 
She studied political science at Williams College and graduated in 2010.
She was also editor of the student newspaper and completed a thesis on political thought. 
Later, she earned her law degree (J.D.) from Yale Law School in 2017.

The same year she published what became one of the most influential papers challenging Big Tech’s dominance. 
Her paper on Amazon’s Antitrust Paradox challenged how tech dominance was defined and how innovation gets blocked.

As a policy researcher, she observed that a few companies controlled entire sectors and the laws remained stuck in the past.

What I believe we, as women, can learn from her journey is:
1/ You don’t need to stay in the same job or title to make an impact.
2. Your deep knowledge matters most when you decide to act on it.

"Strategic Influence" happens when you identify a "system failing" and show how we will fix it.

Lina’s path reminds us that at the senior level you’re not just a leader in your domain. You can be a re-definer of your domain.

She wrote four bestselling novels including the Claudine series under a pen name of her husband’s that made him famous while she stayed invisible.
Years later she rebuilt her career under her name and got nominated for Nobel.

Lesson: Your talent is not defined by who gets the spotlight first.

2. Margaret Keane
For nearly a decade her husband sold her paintings as his own. She worked 16-hour days behind closed doors until she finally proved the truth in court by painting live.

Lesson: Your work speaks louder than theft. It just needs the right stage.

3. Jocelyn Bell Burnell
She discovered radio pulsars, one of the greatest findings in astrophysics. Her male colleagues won the Nobel Prize without mentioning her.

Lesson: Being overlooked does not erase your brilliance. It exposes flawed systems.

4. Lise Meitner
She co-discovered nuclear fission, but her colleague won the Nobel alone. Her contribution was written out of history for decades.

Lesson: You can be the mind behind the breakthrough even if others take the credit. Truth outlasts bias.

Her X-ray photos proved the structure of DNA, yet her male peers published first and got the Nobel.
Her work was the foundation. They got the legacy.

Lesson: Doing the foundational work is leadership, even when unrecognized.

6. Esther Lederberg
She advanced bacterial genetics, but her husband took the spotlight.
He won the Nobel and never mentioned her once.

Lesson: Shared work is not shared recognition. Build a career where your name is tied to your impact.

Yale analyzed thousands of manager evaluations across multiple companies.
Another team studied ~30,000 promotion documents at a major U.S. retailer.

Both studies found the same thing:
Women weren’t underperforming.
In fact, they received higher performance ratings on average.

Yet they were still…
14% less likely to be promoted each year. 🤢 

Here’s what the data makes it impossible for women to ignore:
→ Managers consistently underestimate women’s leadership potential.

At the retail chain, women made up 56% of entry-level roles.

$90B in AI debt. $3.5B in funding. 13k layoffs. Here are the shifts senior women can’t ignore this week.

The AI industry is moving faster than most leaders can track.

Here are the 10 shifts senior women in tech should know this week.

1. Big Tech is taking on massive debt to fund AI.
Hyperscalers have issued nearly ninety billion dollars in bonds since September to finance AI infrastructure. Analysts expect AI capex to hit $600 billion by 2027.

2. Microsoft just made AI agents enterprise infrastructure.
At Ignite 2025, they announced Agent 365 and deeper Copilot integrations. Governance, security, and budget planning for agents are now board-level responsibilities.

3. Google is warning about an AI bubble while regulators step back.
Pichai has raised concerns about overheated valuations and energy costs. At the same time, the EU is delaying parts of its AI Act, shifting compliance timelines for global tech teams.

4. Foxconn and OpenAI are doubling down on U.S. hardware.
They announced a collaboration to co-design data centre hardware with billions in manufacturing investments.

5. Cyber incidents are now a supply chain problem.
Recent breaches highlight how OAuth scopes, vendor integrations, and third-party tools are becoming the core of CISO and CIO risk conversations.

6. AI employment laws are happening state by state.
Several U.S. states introduced bills on algorithmic hiring, bias audits, and workplace monitoring. Cross-functional AI governance is becoming a strategic leadership muscle.

7. Verizon announced its biggest layoff ever.
