I spent the early part of my life chasing the hard stuff.

At 18, I went to China for six months to teach English. Why China? Because it was hard. Nothing familiar. A new system, new rules. That choice ended up shaping everything that came after.

Working across Asia - China, the Philippines, different businesses, different cultures taught me that business isn’t just about being competent. It’s about seeing how things actually work. What’s said. What isn’t. Who holds the power. How decisions really get made.

Family brought me back, and I grew the recruitment business across five countries, 88 people, until we sold in 2020. All of it, the wins, the failures, and the constant change, shaped the way I work with founders today.

Now, I work with founders who've built something real and are facing what comes next - helping them see their patterns, make harder calls, and lead through that uncertainty.

Looking back, the thread through all of it is simple: step into the uncomfortable, figure out how the system really works, and focus on what actually matters. That’s what makes a difference that lasts.

He travelled the world building businesses. 
Then he came back to the UK.

James went to China at 18. 
1997. 
Six months to teach English.

He picked China because it felt hard. 
New system. 
New rules. 
Nothing familiar.
That choice shaped everything.

Working abroad showed him that business isn’t just about competence. 
It’s about knowing how things really work. 
What’s said. 
What isn’t.

In China, contracts were flexible. 
In the Philippines, age mattered more than ability. 
At 26, being young made selling harder.

He moved across Asia through a management programme. 
Different countries. Different businesses. 
Sometimes with a week’s notice.

Family brought him home.
He built a bike marketplace. 
It looked successful. 
Awards. Partners. Press.
But it didn’t work. 
Ethical supply couldn’t scale.

When his family needed him, he stepped in. 
He grew the recruitment business. 
88 people. Five countries. 
Sold in 2020.

He’s not an immigrant in the UK. 
But immigration shaped everything he built.

Today, he works with founders who are already carrying a lot. 
Helping them think more clearly. 
And make better decisions under pressure.

She calls it "meeting in the middle" - checking that your business hasn't drifted from what actually matters to you.

What matters is coming back with clarity, not pressure, knowing what you actually want this year to look like.

Really looking forward to seeing the amazing things so many of you are building, experimenting with, and pushing forward!

It's not about having the right investors. It's about what you actually do with them after you've closed the round.

Ever feel like you’re working non-stop but not really getting anywhere?

That’s exactly what we talked about yesterday in the workshop - the difference between being deliberate and just being responsive.

When things get busy, it’s so easy to slip into responsive mode. You’re under pressure, trying to get things off your plate, telling yourself you’ll slow down later.

And it feels good in the moment. You’re doing stuff. You’re moving. You’re being “productive.”

But a lot of the time, that’s just action, not progress.

You can be incredibly busy and still not be working on the right things. It feels efficient, but it isn’t always effective.

You see it all the time in meetings. Rushing from one to the next. Too many of them. Not really clear what you want to get out of them. Doing things because they’re in the diary, not because they actually matter.

Most of us don’t stop to ask why we’re doing something in the first place. Does this line up with the strategy? Is this really where my time is best spent?

Being deliberate isn’t about slowing everything down. It’s about choosing more carefully.

Less reacting. More intention.
