I had a conversation with Lee Salz about first meetings that shifted some ways I think about sales.

Lee dropped a truth bomb that resonated with me. He said most salespeople treat first meetings like discovery sessions, where they gather information about the prospect. 

But here's the problem... what does the prospect get out of that interaction?

Nothing.

Lee uses a bathroom analogy that's brilliant. There are two types of sales: takeaway sales (where you're trying to get someone to switch from a competitor), and new category sales (where you're introducing something completely different). 

Most of us are in takeaway sales, asking busy people to put aside 400 things on their plate to meet with us just so they can learn about our company.

Why would they take that meeting when they already have a provider?

This is why Lee advocates for consultation-style first meetings instead of discovery meetings. Just like you go to a doctor to understand your circumstances AND potential remedies, prospects need to get meaningful value from meeting with you.

His approach works. He mentioned helping a trash removal company in Minnesota differentiate themselves by asking one simple positioning question: "When's the last time you had your garbage cans cleaned?" 

Nobody thinks about that until you ask. Then suddenly they realize how gross their cans are and how much they'd love someone else to handle it.

The lesson here is powerful. When you're prospecting, you're not selling your product or service. You're selling the first meeting.

I have one rule I never break. I only send pricing after the pricing review is booked. Not "let's circle back." Not "happy to walk through it." Calendar invite accepted. Agenda agreed. This single standard stopped my deals from dying in email.

Here's what most sellers miss:

1.) "Send Pricing" Rarely Means What You Think.

It usually means one of four things: they want a quick range, they need something to forward internally, they're ending the conversation politely, or they're genuinely ready. Only one rewards "sure, I'll send it over."

2.) Movement Isn't Progress.

A PDF moving through email is movement. A decision meeting on the calendar is progress. The moment you "just send it," you shift to an internal debate you won't attend. No control over what gets forwarded, summarized, or killed in Slack.

3.) Reframe The Request.

My script: "Two things first. I don't want to send a menu that creates confusion internally. And pricing only matters in context of what you're solving. Let's book 15 minutes - I'll map you to the right tier, confirm who needs to see it, and decide what's next. Tomorrow at 2 or Thursday at 11?"

If they say yes, you win. If they say no, you learned they didn't actually want pricing. They wanted distance.

4.) Run The Meeting With Four Questions.

Who signs if we agree on an option? What criteria will you use to choose? What are we solving first? If pricing fits, what's the next meeting?

Then send pricing immediately after. Not before.

5.) Make It Easy To Forward.

Generic PDFs get buried. Send a short note:

- Option A: for X outcome, Y team size, Z constraints
- Option B: if they need something different
- What I recommend and why
- Next meeting already scheduled

That's pricing that moves deals forward instead of stalling them.

No calendar, no pricing. Anything else is volunteering to get ghosted.

Cold outreach isn’t dead. Bad outreach is.

For years we’ve all done some version of define the ICP, build a list, run a sequence, hope they’re “in market...”

And when it doesn’t work, we tweak the subject line like that’s the problem.

What’s actually changing is how people buy (and how obvious the clues are now).

If you’re a founder who wants to quit… read this first.

After 10 years of building, I thought I was burned out.

Less energized.
More tired.
A little beaten down.

My motivation was still there, but the energy to turn vision into reality felt like it was slipping. Patience was thinner than when I first started.

I assumed something was wrong.

Then I became a father.

And for the first time in a decade, I truly stepped away and took a few weeks off of work…

At first, the break felt incredible.
Even with no sleep.
Even with a baby up every hour.

But after a few days, something unexpected happened.

I started missing the thing I thought I was sick of.

The work.
The hard problems.
The strategy.
The collaboration.
Building with a team.

When you wake up every day and your only job is to take care of a child, with almost no business or strategic thinking, you realize something fast.

I live and breathe building.

That’s when it hit me.

I wasn’t burned out on building a company.
I just needed a reset for my mind, body, and soul.

Burnout isn’t always a signal to quit. Sometimes it’s a signal to step away long enough to remember why you care.

Whatever you have right now, you want the opposite of it.

And once you get the opposite, you realize what you actually miss. It's a catch 22….

Becoming a father also taught me many things about leadership.

I had no idea how bad my time management really was.

When taking care of a baby…. your time gets compressed overnight, you learn to be ruthless with focus. Every second matters. There’s no room for fake busy. You either execute or you don’t.

It taught me to be ruthless w prioritization and time management…

Here’s my advice to any founder thinking about walking away.

Take 2 to 4 weeks off.

Fully off.

Then decide.

You’ll either come back re-energized and excited to grow again…

Or you’ll realize stepping away is truly what you need and it’s time to move on…

But don’t confuse exhaustion with misalignment.

Sometimes the legacy you’re building, for your family and for yourself, is exactly what reignites the fire.

And sometimes, the break is what saves everything.

Before you quit or shut down…. Take some time off.

Hard conversations in business get easier with two sentences:

“My intent is ______.”
“The impact I’m seeing is ______.”

Then add:
“Here’s what ‘good’ looks like going forward...”

Most conflict is just unspoken expectations colliding.
Clarity is kindness.

Businesses usually don’t fail because they ran out of ideas.

They fail because they run out of cash, often suddenly.

Here are two simple rules:

1.) Protect your runway first.

“Runway” = how long your business can pay its bills if sales slow down.
If you can’t survive the next few months, nothing else matters.

2.) Set aside tax money immediately.

Taxes aren’t “later.” That money isn’t yours to spend.
Put it in a separate account so you’re not surprised by a big bill.

Revenue can look impressive, but it doesn’t guarantee you’re safe.

Cash is what keeps the lights on.
Treat cash like oxygen. Protect it.

Travel doesn’t kill growth. Losing your revenue routine does.

Here's a sales example of a "revenue routine" to stay on track while traveling:

- 15 minutes: review pipeline + next actions.
- 20 minutes: outbound (or follow-ups).
- 10 minutes: customer touch (check-in or quick win).
- 5 minutes: cash check (invoices/receivables, if you run a team).

If I do nothing else, I protect 40 minutes for maintenance.

Growth isn’t a mood.
It’s a routine.

Before the month ends, I run a 10-minute business audit.

Pipeline: How many new conversations did we create?

Conversion: Where did deals stall, and why?

Retention: What caused friction for customers this month?

Cash: What’s runway today, and what changes next month?

Focus: What ONE constraint, if removed, that makes next month easier?

Most teams don’t need more tactics.
They need clearer feedback loops.

Review is how you compound.

​Let’s be real: Nobody wakes up excited to spend four hours cleaning a spreadsheet or hunting for a phone number that actually works.

​If you did, you probably wouldn't be in sales. You’d be a wizard. Or a masochist.

​I’m an Account Executive at Seamless.AI, which is a fancy way of saying I help sales teams stop shouting into the void. I spend my day showing people how to find the right prospects so they can spend less time "prospecting" and more time actually talking to people (you know, the fun part).

​My 2026 Sales Philosophy:
​Quality > Volume: Sending 5,000 "U up?" emails is a strategy, but it’s a bad one.

​Be a person: If your outreach sounds like a robot wrote it, don't be surprised when people treat you like spam.

​Data is power: But only if that data actually gets you on the phone with someone who isn't a gatekeeper named "No."

​When I’m not talking about pipelines and hit rates, I’m probably spending time with my family or watching wrestling.

​When I was an SDR, I once hit a string of 10 no shows in a row.

​10 people who agreed to a meeting and then just didn't bother to show up. It was crushing. I was trying to prove myself in a new career, and I was terrified the AEs were looking at me like I didn't know what I was doing.

​When you’re in that seat, it’s easy to feel like every no show is a personal reflection of your work.

​Now that I’m an AE, I still keep that stretch in mind. Whenever an SDR’s meeting doesn't show up, I make it a point to reach out and let them know I appreciate the effort.

​The truth is, no shows are just part of the game. It’s outbound sales, not a dinner reservation with your mom.

​If you’re an SDR hitting a rough patch, keep your head up. 

And if you’re an AE, remember that the person setting those meetings is in the trenches for you. 

A little appreciation goes a long way when the calendar isn't cooperating.

After managing SDR teams for a long time, I realized that burnout isn't usually about the number of dials. It is much deeper than that.

​People don't burn out because they are busy, they burn out because they lose their "why." As a manager, you have to keep an eye on two different versions of that.

​First, there is the "why" behind the daily grind. If an SDR is struggling and your only response is to tell them to "get the numbers up," you aren't actually coaching them. You are just asking them to work harder at something that isn't working. They need to see that their effort is actually going somewhere, otherwise, they are just going through the motions.

​Then there is the personal "why." Nobody actually cares about your company’s quarterly goals as much as they care about their own life. Maybe they are trying to get promoted, or maybe they are just trying to pay off some debt.

​If you don't know what your people are actually working toward for themselves, you aren't really leading them. You are just a boss who looks at a screen all day.

​The best SDRs I ever had didn't need more leads. They just needed to know that their manager actually understood what they were trying to achieve, both in and out of the office.

​If your team is hitting a wall, stop staring at the dashboard and go have a real conversation with them.

​January broke me.

​I had the worst month of my professional career. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you about everything that went wrong. Whether in my control or not. I'm also not gonna talk about the sales lessons I've learned from this and all the typical LinkedIn stuff.

​I want to talk about the mental and emotional toll this took on me.

​Here's the truth when this happens.

​The thoughts and worries become real.

​Did I lose my ability to sell, do people not like me, do people still trust me?

​Is this going to happen again, am I going to be put on a PIP, am I going to lose my job?

​How am I going to tell my wife about the awful commission check coming, how will this affect our plans for the year, did I disappoint my family?

​And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

​On a deal to deal basis, I'm pretty good at separating myself from the outcome. But when you're in a performance based job and you hit a career low, it's hard not to take that personally.

​I will learn from this and I will get better from this because there is no other option.

​For now, I'm going to start February by getting rid of all negative thoughts and self doubts.

​I'll be real again with my "call to action" here.

​I could use some encouragement and I would love to hear some advice if you've been through something similar

​I keep seeing these posts on here about how easy sales is if you just follow some five step secret framework.

​It makes me feel like I am doing something wrong because most of my day is just me sitting here with a cold coffee trying to figure out why a deal went dark.

​The truth is being an AE isn't some movie script. It is mostly just being a professional pesterer.

​You spend half your time checking in on people who promised to sign on Tuesday and the other half making sure your demos don't turn into a total disaster.

​When I was an SDR I thought the closing part was the glamorous part. Now I know it is just the end of a long road of staying organized and not losing your mind when things change for the tenth time.

​I am not some sales guru and I am definitely not closing deals from a beach. I am just a person who shows up and does what I said I would do.

​The big wins are cool but the boring stuff in the middle is what actually keeps the lights on.

​It is a weird Monday to be doing outreach, especially when half the country is currently under a foot of ice.

​I am still sitting here grinding through my follow ups today, but I am definitely checking the zip codes before I hit send.

​If I see a prospect is in the middle of a state of emergency or dealing with power outages, I am not going to be the person asking them to hop on a quick call. That is just common sense.

​I am still working the pipeline, but it is okay to have a little grace when people are literally trying to find their shovels or keep the lights on.

​You can still get your work done without being the person who ignores reality. Sometimes the best sales move is just acknowledging that your prospect has bigger things to worry about today than whatever you are selling.

​Patience isn't a soft skill, it is just being a person who isn't a total jerk.

​Stay safe and stay warm if you are digging out today.

PS. I think we got about 16 inches of snow here in Pittsburgh.

The end of the month is always a weird mix of adrenaline and just being flat out tired. You spend all this time lining things up and then you’re basically just sitting there on a Friday afternoon watching your phone and hoping someone actually does what they said they’d do.

​It is stressful when a deal you’ve been counting on suddenly goes quiet right at the finish line but that rush when it finally lands is a massive high. Hitting the number when the clock is winding down is easily one of the best parts of the job.

​I’ve had to learn not to let the silence get to me though. Staring at my email for three hours straight doesn't make a contract get signed any faster and it just fries your brain. I try to just go hug my daughter or have a quick five minute convo with a friend to reset because getting worked up over a signature you've already asked for is a waste of energy.

​I’m definitely ready to actually unplug this weekend before the scoreboard resets on Monday and we start the whole process over again.
