Tried explaining my work to my dad again yesterday.


Him: "So you write posts on the internet for people?"

Me: "Yeah, basically."

Him: "And they pay you for that?"

Me: "Yes, dad."

Him: "How much?"

Me: "Dad."

Him: "What? I'm just asking."

Me: sighs

Him: "So let me get this straight. You write words. On a screen. And people give you money for it."

Me: "Yes."

Him: "Sounds easier than my job."

Me: "It's not as easy as it sounds."

Him: "You sit at a computer and type. How hard can it be?"

Me: "..."

Me: "I write LinkedIn posts for executives. It influences how people perceive them. It has a direct impact on their business!"

Him: "So you help them write better?"

Me: "I help them not sound boring."

Him: blank stare

Him: "Do they not know how to write?"

Me: "They do. They just don't know how to make it sound like themselves."

Him: "That doesn't make sense."

Me: "I know."

Him: "Your mother still thinks you should've been a doctor."

Me: "I know."


I've made my peace with the fact that not everyone will get what I do.

Very quick LinkedIn tip:


If you see a post that says "LinkedIn just changed their algorithm" without an actual source, they made it up.

Nobody knows how the LinkedIn algorithm actually works except the people who built it.

And they're not grabbing cuppas with random internet gurus and spilling their secrets.

Stop believing everything you read just because it came with bullet points and a confident tone.

Ask for a source.

If they can't provide one, they're lying.

LinkedIn bros who end every post with "Agree?" are the worst.

Brother, you just spent 200 words explaining why the sky is blue and water is wet.

Yes. We agree.

We've all agreed since birth.

You didn't just drop a controversial take that's going to split the comments section down the middle.

You said "communication is important in business."
We're not going to fight you on that.

And yet. Every single post.

"Leadership requires empathy. Agree?"
"Hard work leads to success. Agree?"
"Breathing oxygen keeps you alive. Agree?"

You're not starting a conversation.

You're fishing for comments because you read somewhere that the algorithm likes it.

Here's a wild idea:
Say something actually interesting.
Something people might actually disagree with.

Then you won't need to ask them to validate your LinkedIn existence with a one-word reply.

LinkedIn posts are starting to look like ransom notes.

You're not a poet.
You're not writing a screenplay.

You're just making people scroll four times as much to read one sentence.

When did LinkedIn become a slam poetry competition?

Most of you don't post on LinkedIn because you don't know what to post.

Let's fix that today.

Here are 10 questions that will help you write engaging posts.

(I've created this list from the same questions I ask my ghostwriting clients.)

Use them. Steal them. Do whatever you want to do with them.

1. What's a client question you've answered 50 times this year?

2. What's the biggest misconception about your work?

3. What's a painful mistake you made that your audience can avoid?

4. What do most people in your industry get completely wrong?

5. What's one lesson from outside business (sports, travel, family) that shapes how you work?

6. What was the hardest decision you made this year, and how did you choose?

7. What's one process or system you swear by and why?

8. What's the most underrated skill in your industry right now?

9. What's a belief you had starting out that turned out to be false?

10. What do you want every new client to know before working with you?

Answer these and you'll have 10 posts ready to go.

The truth is you don't need more "content ideas."

You need sharper questions that expose the stories and insights hiding in plain sight.
