Most leaders never admit this.

Sunday night hits different when you're in the wrong role.

I've worked with senior leaders in large complex organizations for 20 years and now in coaching Fortune 500 executives & leaders, I see the same pattern:

Most dismiss Sunday anxiety as "Monday blues."
We all tell ourselves successful people push through.

But not all Sunday dread is the same.

Some is your brain shifting from rest to performance mode. 
Normal transition stress that fades by Tuesday. 
You find your rhythm. Parts of work still excite you.

Other times, it's your soul waving a red flag.

I ignored mine for years. Told myself discomfort meant growth. That I needed to be tougher.

Here's what I learned the hard way but you don't need to:

Monday Dread looks like:
→ Resistance that fades once you start working
→ Anxiety about specific meetings or deadlines
→ Energy returns by Tuesday afternoon
→ Some projects still light you up
→ Weekends actually restore you

Role Exhaustion looks different:
→ Physical symptoms every Sunday afternoon
→ Can't name one thing you're looking forward to
→ Fantasizing about disappearing completely
→ Success feels hollow and meaningless
→ Vacations don't help anymore

Monday dread needs boundaries and recovery.
Role exhaustion needs change.

No amount of self-care fixes misalignment.

Your body keeps score. Physical symptoms. 
Chronic fatigue. That knot in your stomach. 
These aren't weakness, they're intelligence.

I see leaders stay too long because admitting exhaustion feels like failure. 
But isn't staying in the wrong role or place failing too?

Consider what your body is telling you:

Maybe you need a role redesign.
Or a team change.
Perhaps that promotion or move you're avoiding.
Or that scope conversation you keep delaying.

✖️ The point isn't to quit today.

The trap of perfection.

I used to spend hours tweaking tiny details. I thought it made my work better. In truth, it just made me tired and slow.

The world rewards people who get the big things right, not those who obsess over the small stuff.

Every decision has a few things that matter most. Usually, it’s just three to five key factors. If you know these well, you can make good choices fast.

I learned this the hard way. I would research every angle, every possible outcome, every tiny risk. I thought I was being smart. But I was just wasting time.

Research shows that after a certain point, learning more about even the important things gives you less and less value. 

This is called diminishing returns. 
The first hour you spend learning gives you a lot. 
The tenth hour gives you almost nothing new.

Perfectionists ignore this. 
They keep digging, keep tweaking, keep worrying. 
They miss deadlines. They burn out. 
They lose sight of what matters.

The best performers focus on the vital few. They get clear on what matters most. They go deep, but only until the returns start to fade. Then they move on.

Here’s how I changed:

→ I list the three to five most important things for every big decision.
→ I learn these inside and out.
→ I stop when I notice I’m just repeating myself or chasing tiny gains.
→ I let go of the urge to make every detail perfect.
→ I make progress in iterations.

This shift changed my life. I get more done. 
I feel less stress. I make better decisions.

Perfection is not the goal. Progress is.
Progress is made in iterations.

You do not need to know everything. 
You just need to know what matters.

Let go of the rest.

Your time and energy are too precious to waste on the margins.

Give yourself time - at least six months.
Build one real connection at a time. Don’t rush it.

If it’s the information shift:
Start asking different questions.
Less “What’s the update?”
More “What am I not seeing?” - and then wait for the answer.

If it’s the relationship change:
Find people outside your company who get it.
Peer groups. Coaches. Mentors.
People with no stake in how you see them.

So maybe it’s not loneliness.
Maybe it’s transition. Or distance. Or a role shift.

Either way, you’re not the only one feeling it.

You can't control what they say about you.
But you own what happens next.

Adam Grant calls it the "second score."

Most people defend or disappear when criticized.
The ones who rise, do something different.

They evaluate themselves on the improvement made in response to the criticism, focusing on learning and growth instead of staying stuck in their initial reaction to that criticism.

They ask one question: 
"What's the ONE thing I could improve?"

Simple move.
No drama. 
No defensiveness.

Your second score shapes everything:
- Whether people invest time giving you feedback
- Whether you're seen as coachable or difficult
- Whether doors open or quietly close

The first score stings for a moment.
The second score builds your reputation for years.

→ Do a 5-minute brain dump
Get everything out of your head and onto paper.
Clarity starts once the clutter has somewhere else to live.

When your chest feels tight (anxious):
→ Breathe for 3 minutes
Slow inhales, slower exhales.
Bring your attention back to now, not ten steps ahead.

When your body feels heavy (tired):
→ Lie down or nap for 20 minutes
This isn’t laziness, it’s depletion.
Short rest beats another hour of low-quality effort.

When your mood is low (sad):
→ Move gently
Stretch, walk, or sway to music.
Emotion shifts more easily when your body does.

When everything feels urgent (stressed):
→ Walk without your phone
Give your nervous system some quiet.
Perspective needs space, not more input.

When you’re stuck in the scroll (doom loop):
→ Log off for an hour
Constant input blurs your own thoughts.
Step away so your mind can hear itself again.

When you feel done (burned out):
→ Read a few pages of something nourishing
No pressure to “improve.”
Just a calm re-entry into yourself.

The real win isn’t feeling amazing all the time.
It’s knowing how to get yourself unstuck, faster and kinder.

Small reset. Big shift.
That’s self-leadership in real life.
