63 minutes ago someone called to tell me I was dead.

Not metaphorically.

They had already filed an official Google support case claiming I had passed away, and they wanted everything:

• My Google Workspace account
• My entire digital presence
• My business domain
• My emails

The caller introduced himself as David Odza from Google Support.

Professional voice. Palo Alto phone number. A legitimate Google confirmation email sitting right in my inbox.

Everything checked out.

Except one thing.

I knew it was a scam.

Here's where it gets interesting.

He kept asking about my email address. Fishing. Guessing. Circling back to it repeatedly, trying to confirm which account was actually mine.

Then he landed on an old Gmail address.

He asked me directly, "Is this your email?"

I said yes.

What he didn't know was that he'd just found my honeypot.

A honeypot is a fake account that looks real, set up specifically to attract attackers. No real data. No connections to anything important. No value whatsoever.

A trap dressed up as a target.

I keep one precisely for moments like this — an old Gmail address I've never used for anything real, sitting there waiting for exactly this kind of situation.

He thought he'd struck gold.

I let him think that.

Because I had a reason.

I needed his IP address for the fraud report.

He initiated account recovery. Walked me through approving it on the phone — a classic social engineering move where they get you to authorize your own account takeover in real time.

I played along.

Then I watched it unfold in real time:

• He logged in from Massachusetts
• Changed the password trying to lock me out permanently
• I changed it back first
• Kicked him off a Windows machine he had no business being on

And walked away with his IP addresses, phone number, and fake identities

They spent hours planning a sophisticated deceased account takeover.

They got into an empty trap.

Got absolutely nothing.

Now everything, the IPs, the phone number, the fake identities "David Odza" and "Timothy Casper", is sitting in a fraud report heading straight to Google's security team.

The lesson?

These attacks are becoming more sophisticated every day. They use:

• Real confirmation emails
• Real Google infrastructure
• Real support case numbers

Set up a honeypot. Trust your instincts. And if someone calls to tell you that you're dead, maybe don't take their word for it.

I typed twitter . com into my browser today.

Or so I thought. My screen went black. Then full screen. My keyboard stopped responding. Every key I pressed did nothing...

For about three seconds, I felt that cold drop in my stomach. The one that says: *you've been hacked.*

My mind raced. Passwords. Bank accounts. Client data. Fifteen people depend on systems I manage.

Then I did the only thing I could think of.

Cmd + Option + Escape. Force quit Chrome.

It worked. I was out.

My next hour was spent researching what happened. Scanning for malware. Checking extensions. Reviewing DNS settings. Preparing for the worst.

The diagnosis?

I missed one letter.

I typed `.cm` instead of `.com`. That's it. One missing "o."

Turns out `.cm` is Cameroon's country code. And someone bought `http://twitter . cm` (DO NOT TYPE IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER) years ago for one reason: to catch people who type too fast.

That domain redirected me through an ad-tracking network. The full-screen lockout was just JavaScript on a webpage. Not malware. Not a hack. A scare tactic designed to make you panic and do something stupid.

Like calling a fake tech support number. Or clicking a button that *actually* installs malware.

Here's what stuck with me.

I run a digital agency. I live in browsers all day. I know better. And I still almost fell for it.

Now imagine someone on your team who doesn't know what force quit is.

That's the real danger. Not the scam itself. It's that it only needs to work once on the wrong person.

Three things worth doing today:

1. Show your team how to force quit a frozen browser (Cmd+Option+Escape on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+Escape on Windows)
2. Tell them to never call a number displayed on a "your computer is infected" screen
3. Remind them that the scariest-looking attacks are often the least dangerous, and the quiet ones are what actually get you

One missing letter almost ruined my afternoon.

Stop consuming news like it's your job. Set one 15-minute window per day. Outside that window, your attention belongs to your work and the people you love. Anxiety drops the moment your information diet gets intentional.

Every repetitive task you still do manually is stealing focus from the work that matters. Tools are evolving fast.

She was a senior manager in tech.
Brilliant. Capable. 
Someone everyone knew could deliver.

But the room felt careful around her.
People stayed surface level. 
She felt the distance too.

What changed things were 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀 we implemented together:

𝟭. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱.
• A grounded leader gives people permission to be honest.
• Her team no longer had to read her tone or energy before speaking.
• Grounded leadership builds safety because people know what version of you they will meet.

𝟮. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗱.
• Instead of rushing to the answer she said, "Walk me through your thinking."
• This helped her understand how her team approached problems.
• It also gave them space to show their intelligence instead of defending their work.

𝟯. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
• She stopped assuming people already knew what great looked like.
• She spelled out the vision, the why and the standard.
• Clarity lifted pressure and replaced it with focus.
• Her team stopped guessing and started delivering with confidence.

𝟰. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆.
• She kept expectations strong while staying connected.
• She asked, "What support do you need to deliver this well."
• This simple question made performance a shared responsibility.
• It brought out the best in her team without burning them out.

𝟱. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.
• She stopped telling people how to show up and started showing them.
• She regulated herself in hard moments.
• She shared her process openly.
• She honoured her own boundaries.
• And her team mirrored what they witnessed.

Three months later her director said,

There’s a moment high performers rarely talk about.

Not burnout.
Not a crisis.

I first felt it years ago when I was still in big tech.

On paper: great title, great team, great trajectory.
In rooms: steady, trusted, clear.

Everything “worked.”
But inside, something had shifted.

It wasn’t confusion,
it was evolution.

And here’s the part no one teaches us:

When your identity evolves faster than your career,
you don’t feel lost.
You feel 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱.

I used to make decisions from 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆,
what’s smart, expected, proven. 

But now?
I make decisions from 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲,
what’s aligned, energizing, true.

I didn’t burn anything down to make that shift.
I simply began choosing differently...

• cleaner meetings,
• braver asks,
• tighter boundaries,
• work that fit the woman I was becoming.

And clarity didn’t arrive as answers.
It arrived as 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳.

If your inner question is shifting
from “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗱𝗼?”

Burnout doesn’t start with a breakdown.
It starts quietly:

• Creativity narrows
• Patience shortens
• Thinking feels heavier
• The same output takes more effort
• Your energy stops matching your ambition
  
That isn’t failure.
It’s 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Between what you’re carrying and
what your system can support right now.

High achievers are taught to treat
these cues as a challenge: 

• don’t slow down,
• push harder,
• don’t listen.

But your body isn’t saying 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵.
It’s saying 𝘱𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

Listening isn’t weakness.
It’s how you stay sharp and effective for the long run.

If someone in your network is pushing past their signals,
𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀.

It might give them language for what
they’ve been powering through.

Most people think people‑pleasing is kindness.
But for many high‑achieving women,
it becomes something else:

A habit of 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲.

Every time you say 𝘺𝘦𝘴 to avoid disappointing someone,
you end up saying 𝘯𝘰 to yourself:
your energy, your time, your wellbeing.

And here are the truths most women don’t realize:

1️⃣ 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲‑𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.
When everyone else comes first, your body learns your comfort and peace are optional.

2️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀.
Not because you’ve changed for the worse but because the new you isn’t as convenient.

3️⃣ 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲. 
Confidence grows when you honour your voice, not when you silence it for approval.

Saying “no” doesn’t make you difficult.
It makes you 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿.

And clarity is what rebuilds identity,
one decision at a time.

Save this for the days you start slipping back into old patterns.
It’s your reminder that choosing yourself is a skill, not a problem.

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧‑𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

We’ve been conditioned to believe that fast responses signal reliability.

But in reality, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 sends the opposite message:
that your time, focus, and energy are always for the taking.

Here’s what actually happens when you stop replying the second a notification hits your phone:

1️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. People recognize you’re not “on call.” You’re a professional with priorities and a workflow.

2️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻. You shift out of reactivity and back into intentional, high‑quality work.

3️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁. When access isn’t immediate, your time becomes something others value.

4️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿‑𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. Teams grow faster when they stop defaulting to the person who responds first.

5️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Every interruption fractures concentration. Responding when 𝘺𝘰𝘶 choose keeps your brain online.

6️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. A 5-minute pause often leads to a clearer, more strategic response.

7️⃣ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. You weren’t meant to live in reaction to notifications.

𝗔 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗜 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
Define communication windows...
intentional moments when you respond,
instead of reacting all day long.

Your presence becomes more powerful when it’s not constant.

𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀: Is this something you're actively working on this year?

🔺 Being respected and trusted gets you chosen for the rooms that matter.

🔻 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯. 
🔺 Sponsors carry your name into those rooms when you’re not there.

🔻 Loyalty 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 until it’s one‑sided. 
🔺 Loyalty to your 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 puts you back in control.

🔻 Trying to impress everyone 𝘥𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 your impact. 
🔺 A few intentional, strategic relationships shift your entire path.

🔻 Your output is high, but 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘭 is unclear. 
🔺 When your leadership brand is intentional, opportunities accelerate.

You’re not stuck because you’re not capable.

"𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳. 𝘓𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘢𝘺."

Notice what shifts.

You are not apologizing.
You are leading the moment.
You are choosing clarity over urgency.
You are modeling grounded presence.

This is how self led leaders answer tough questions.
They slow the room down.
They protect the quality of the decision.
They show they do not guess.

Here are the habits I build with my clients that change everything:

𝟭. 𝗔𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄.
• Speak from clarity not emotion.
• Try, "Based on what I am seeing, here is the pattern."
• Your expertise sets the tone.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.
• Do not wait for the perfect moment.
• Contribute before the room circles back to you.
• Initiative builds presence.

𝟯. 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
• Interruptions happen. Derailments happen.
• Bring it back with, "I am going to finish my point" or "Let me take us back to the question".
• This is quiet authority.

𝟰. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸.
• Not hype. Truth.
• e.g., "I have done this before." "I know my craft." "I have solved harder problems."
• This steadies your body.

𝟱. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱.
• Challenge does not mean you are wrong. It means your thinking matters.
• Try, "Yes and the rationale still stands because..."
• You stay in the room instead of shrinking.

When you practice these habits,
your voice feels stronger
your presence feels cleaner
your confidence becomes consistent

even in rooms that once felt intimidating.
