63 minutes ago someone called to tell me I was dead.

Not metaphorically.

They had already filed an official Google support case claiming I had passed away, and they wanted everything:

• My Google Workspace account
• My entire digital presence
• My business domain
• My emails

The caller introduced himself as David Odza from Google Support.

Professional voice. Palo Alto phone number. A legitimate Google confirmation email sitting right in my inbox.

Everything checked out.

Except one thing.

I knew it was a scam.

Here's where it gets interesting.

He kept asking about my email address. Fishing. Guessing. Circling back to it repeatedly, trying to confirm which account was actually mine.

Then he landed on an old Gmail address.

He asked me directly, "Is this your email?"

I said yes.

What he didn't know was that he'd just found my honeypot.

A honeypot is a fake account that looks real, set up specifically to attract attackers. No real data. No connections to anything important. No value whatsoever.

A trap dressed up as a target.

I keep one precisely for moments like this — an old Gmail address I've never used for anything real, sitting there waiting for exactly this kind of situation.

He thought he'd struck gold.

I let him think that.

Because I had a reason.

I needed his IP address for the fraud report.

He initiated account recovery. Walked me through approving it on the phone — a classic social engineering move where they get you to authorize your own account takeover in real time.

I played along.

Then I watched it unfold in real time:

• He logged in from Massachusetts
• Changed the password trying to lock me out permanently
• I changed it back first
• Kicked him off a Windows machine he had no business being on

And walked away with his IP addresses, phone number, and fake identities

They spent hours planning a sophisticated deceased account takeover.

They got into an empty trap.

Got absolutely nothing.

Now everything, the IPs, the phone number, the fake identities "David Odza" and "Timothy Casper", is sitting in a fraud report heading straight to Google's security team.

The lesson?

These attacks are becoming more sophisticated every day. They use:

• Real confirmation emails
• Real Google infrastructure
• Real support case numbers

Set up a honeypot. Trust your instincts. And if someone calls to tell you that you're dead, maybe don't take their word for it.

I typed twitter . com into my browser today.

Or so I thought. My screen went black. Then full screen. My keyboard stopped responding. Every key I pressed did nothing...

For about three seconds, I felt that cold drop in my stomach. The one that says: *you've been hacked.*

My mind raced. Passwords. Bank accounts. Client data. Fifteen people depend on systems I manage.

Then I did the only thing I could think of.

Cmd + Option + Escape. Force quit Chrome.

It worked. I was out.

My next hour was spent researching what happened. Scanning for malware. Checking extensions. Reviewing DNS settings. Preparing for the worst.

The diagnosis?

I missed one letter.

I typed `.cm` instead of `.com`. That's it. One missing "o."

Turns out `.cm` is Cameroon's country code. And someone bought `http://twitter . cm` (DO NOT TYPE IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER) years ago for one reason: to catch people who type too fast.

That domain redirected me through an ad-tracking network. The full-screen lockout was just JavaScript on a webpage. Not malware. Not a hack. A scare tactic designed to make you panic and do something stupid.

Like calling a fake tech support number. Or clicking a button that *actually* installs malware.

Here's what stuck with me.

I run a digital agency. I live in browsers all day. I know better. And I still almost fell for it.

Now imagine someone on your team who doesn't know what force quit is.

That's the real danger. Not the scam itself. It's that it only needs to work once on the wrong person.

Three things worth doing today:

1. Show your team how to force quit a frozen browser (Cmd+Option+Escape on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+Escape on Windows)
2. Tell them to never call a number displayed on a "your computer is infected" screen
3. Remind them that the scariest-looking attacks are often the least dangerous, and the quiet ones are what actually get you

But that first screen has a much bigger job.

It needs to instantly answer three questions:

• Why should I trust this brand?
• Why should I care about this product?
• What should I do next?

So here’s what we changed in that one small section:

1️⃣ Added trust immediately
We introduced a simple USP toolbar under the navigation using the three biggest buying drivers from post-purchase surveys.

2️⃣ Simplified the value message
We cleaned up the layout and added three clear, benefit-driven bullets so visitors could understand the value in seconds.

3️⃣ Strengthened the CTA
We replaced the generic CTA with a more emotive call-to-action, made it full-width on mobile, and anchored it with trust signals.

That tiny section…

Sometimes CRO isn’t about redesigning pages.

Sometimes it’s just about treating the first screen like the most valuable real estate on your store.

Most supplement brands lead with discounts.
The smarter ones lead with belief.

Here’s how I’d CRO-optimise Legion Athletics 👇

1/ Homepage: shift from promo → positioning
Before:
• BOGO 50% dominated the entire above-the-fold
• The brand felt promotional instead of performance-driven
• Product value came after the sale

After:
• Clear, outcome-led headline: Build muscle. Burn fat. Feel stronger.
• Immediate social proof (15,000+ 5★ reviews)
• Product imagery that reinforces performance
• Clean benefit icons: naturally flavored, lab tested, money-back guarantee
• Single strong CTA: Shop Bestsellers
CRO principle: Sell the outcome first. Offer the discount second.

2/ PDP: make the value instantly obvious
Before:
• Social proof present but buried
• Product benefits lost in long description
• Subscription value unclear

After:
• Review rating pulled directly under product imagery
• Bold benefit stack highlighting protein quality
• Cleaner product selection hierarchy
• BOGO offer clearly integrated into the variant selector
• Reduced cognitive load for faster decisions
CRO principle: Reduce reading. Increase clarity.

3/ Cart: turn intent into higher AOV
Before:
• Free shipping progress unclear
• Upsell cluttered into the cart experience
• CTA lacked hierarchy

After:
• Clear progress bar pushing the BOGO incentive
• Structured upsell with reviews and clean “ADD” CTA
• Savings surfaced clearly
• Strong Checkout Securely button with trust badges
• Reinforced 100% money-back guarantee

CRO principle: The cart should increase momentum, not introduce friction.

This isn’t about prettier design.

It’s about hierarchy, trust signals, and removing decision friction, the things that actually move CVR and AOV.

Direct response sales pages still work! 🔥

Here’s my considered take on AI disrupting the landing page industry.
I’ve stayed fairly quiet on this conversation.
Mostly watching.
Watching qualified and very unqualified people debate it.
So here’s my honest view.
For context.
Landing pages and CRO have been my life for the past 13 years.
For nearly 8 years our agency was literally known as “the landing page guys.”
We’ve designed more landing pages than any other agency on the planet, and many frameworks used by DTC brands today came from work we pioneered years ago.
I say that only to add context.
Because this conversation needs experience, not just opinions.
426 landing pages.
Being worked on right now by our team.
No typo.
 Not edited.
 Not exaggerated.
Just the reality of our pipeline.
But let me also be clear.
I’m not naive.
AI is absolutely disrupting the landing page industry.
But the conversation lacks nuance.
There are really two sides to this.
First.
Yes, AI will massively disrupt agencies and freelancers in this space.
I believe many will disappear over the next 12–24 months.
Not overnight.
But the shift is coming.
Second.
Despite the hype, AI is still a long way from replicating what serious CRO teams do.
From what we’re seeing internally, AI is nowhere near the quality of output, the variety of page types, or most importantly…
the results.
And results are what matter.
We’ve yet to see meaningful disruption for things like:
• Shopify landing pages
 • PDP optimisation
 • full sales pages
 • store redesigns
 • complex funnels
These require experience, strategy, customer psychology and deep data interpretation.
AI helps with those things.
But it doesn’t replace them.
And personally, I don’t believe anything will replace human strategy when it comes to CRO.
Where AI has already disrupted things is advertorials and pre-sell pages.
Those pages can be produced quickly, and AI can already generate and deploy versions of them.
Development workflows will look very different in the next 6–12 months.
At our agency we’re not ignoring AI.
Quite the opposite.
We’re going all in.
Building internal systems, experimenting with tools, and developing software around it.
Because the winners won’t be the people fighting AI.
They’ll be the ones using it better than everyone else.
But I’ll also say this.
There’s a lot of noise and bullshit around AI right now.
Many people claiming it can do things it simply can’t yet.
The real challenge is figuring out what actually works for your business and workflow.
Use AI where it improves speed, insight or execution.
But don’t fall into the trap of thinking it replaces thinking.
Because it doesn’t.
I do feel for many agencies and freelancers.
Business models will disappear.
Those who don’t adapt will struggle.
But one thing I’ve learned after more than a decade in this industry:
There will always be a market for expertise.
Which is why the thing we’re doubling down on strategy.
Because when execution becomes easier…
thinking becomes more valuable.

🧪 CRO Case Study

The Problem:
The product pages had reviews.
They just weren’t positioned where doubt happens.

On mobile, users would hit the CTA… hesitate… and scroll.

The reassurance came too late.

The Hypothesis:
If we placed high-quality, friction-addressing reviews directly beneath the mobile CTA, we could reduce hesitation at the exact moment of decision.

Not more reviews.
Just better placement.

What We Did:
• Selected highly relevant reviews using post-purchase survey insights
• Focused on common friction points
• Highlighted them in strong, coloured containers for visibility
• Positioned them directly under the CTA on mobile
Right where buying decisions are made.

Why It Worked:
The CTA creates tension.
Reviews relieve it.

By placing social proof immediately after intent, we shortened the gap between “Should I?” and “I’m buying.”

The Result:
👉 +$63,735 per month
Driven by increased revenue per session and stronger mobile conversion rates.

Reminder:
Social proof isn’t just about having it.

It’s about placing it exactly where doubt lives.

• Multiple promo messages competing
• Brand positioning diluted
After:
• Controlled sale strip (still there, just not overpowering)
• Trust score anchored high
• Clear science-led headline: “Supplements That Show Their Work”
• Outcome-driven subheading
• One dominant CTA

CRO principle: Lead with belief → reinforce with proof → then sell.

2/ PDP: reduce cognitive load
Before:
• Good visuals
• But benefit hierarchy was soft
• Subscription value not fully emphasised
After:
• Reviews surfaced immediately
• Bold, scannable benefit stack
• Outcome keywords highlighted
• Subscription framed as smart value
• Cleaner decision structure

CRO principle: Make the decision obvious.

3/ Cart: remove hesitation at the money moment
Before:
• Incentives layered and visually noisy
• Savings logic slightly overwhelming
• CTA competing with other elements
After:
• One clear savings progress bar
• Upsells structured cleanly
• Savings clearly surfaced
• Strong, dominant “Checkout Securely” CTA
• Trust cues properly placed

CRO principle: The cart should increase momentum, not introduce doubt.

This isn’t a redesign.
It’s hierarchy, psychology, and friction removal.

That’s optimisation.
