Over the weekend, I had the privilege of attending Ali Abdaal's Spark 2026 webinar, where we set a vision and direction for our lives for the new year.

I gained a bucketload of insights, one of which was the concept of “tiny experiments” by neuroscientist Anne-Laure Le Cunff, PhD.

From her talk, I gained a new lens for viewing my goals: what she calls an experimental mindset.

With this mindset, success is not about achieving a specific outcome. Success is learning. There is no failure, only data.

Instead of setting rigid goals, you run tiny experiments. I see it as applying the scientific method to your own life.

For example, if you want to lose weight, instead of starting with a goal, you might begin with a curiosity-driven question like: “What happens if I stop eating earlier in the evening for one week?”

From there, you create what she calls a “pact,” or a simple mini-protocol for the experiment. The structure is intentionally straightforward: “I will [action] for [short duration].”

For example: I will fast from 5 pm to 9 am every night for one week.

During that time, you observe how your body and mind respond. Keeping “field notes” helps you track things like energy, mood, difficulty, and sustainability.

After the experiment, you review what you learned and decide whether to keep, tweak, or discard the approach based on the data, not on self-judgment.

The point is not to pressure yourself or feel disappointed if something does not stick. The point is to stay curious.

This is only a small slice of what she covered, and she did write an entire book on the topic. (And if I’ve misunderstood or oversimplified any part of this, I’d  love to be corrected.) I mostly wanted to capture what stuck with me while it was fresh, and to share it here in case it resonates with someone else.

Overall, I find it comforting to see life as a series of tiny experiments. Nothing is wasted, not even the attempts that do not work.
