Wales College Secondary School

As a High School English and ESL Teacher, I assist high school students with their studies and support them in understanding the Ontario curriculum through a variety of interactive class activities.   I also use a variety of assessments to monitor their progress: assessments FOR learning, assessments AS learning, and assessments OF learning.  To provide a clear picture on student progress, I gather evidence using the triangulation method of observations, conversations, and student products.  On the administrative side of the job, I create a variety of documents: course syllabi; lesson and unit plans; rubrics; assessments; and final exams.  Ultimately, my goal is to help international students learn English as a Second Language and adjust to life in Canada, as well as help them develop the necessary learning skills and work habits to succeed beyond school environments.

High School English and ESL Teacher

University of Toronto Scarborough

I worked  as a Research Study Assistant at the University of Toronto Scarborough's Department of Language Studies, under Dr. Rena Helms-Park's supervision.  I transformed 220-240 item Peabody Picture vocabulary tasks into 4 electronic versions for online use with elementary school French Immersion students on Zoom.  I edited and proofread 7-10 test materials and articles for coherence and structure for publication purposes.  I also co-created recruitment and informed consent materials to educate students and parents about the study.

Research Study Assistant

Phoenix Academy of the Arts

As an ESL Teaching Assistant for the Phoenix Academy of the Arts, I created and facilitated lesson plans for beginner and advanced level English second language learners (4-8/class, and 1 advanced ESL student).  The point of these lessons was to help these students practice their speaking, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills.  Furthermore, a needs-based approach was used, such that the content and the lessons were created to fit with the students' needs.   Ultimately, the goal was to help these students gain confidence in speaking the English language, and we achieved this with a 100% approval rate and comfort level from the students.  This position also required a great deal of collaboration with the staff and other teaching assistants, when it came to planning the lessons, and discussing different approaches for how to best facilitate the class.  Various teaching strategies were translated into actions as well, such as speaking at a suitable pace and volume, using visual aids, encouragement, and ongoing practice to help the students understand the content to the best of their ability.  These lessons primarily focused on verbal and conversational English, while integrating lessons on grammar and vocabulary.

Specifically, there were two types of classes: ESL Teaching, and Spoken English Practice.  For ESL Teaching (2-hour long class), a specific curriculum had to be followed, such that the emphasis was placed on daily English conversation, while still focusing on English grammar and vocabulary.  A multitude of media were used, such as: videos; discussion questions; focused listening and reading; etc.  The Spoken English Practice (1-hour class) sessions were free conversation opportunities, in which the teaching assistant came up with 3-5 topics for discussion, encouraging the students to share their opinions.  Therefore, students had 9 hours of weekly practice.

Welcome to my profile!  I am a passionate Secondary School English and ESL Teacher who loves to make a difference in the lives of my students.  Allow me to share my story:

I graduated from the University of Toronto Scarborough with a Specialist Degree in Psycholinguistics, and a Minor in Psychology.  During my time at UTSC, I have volunteered as a student ambassador, peer helper for two Introductory Linguistics courses, class note taker for four courses, and bible study facilitator.  Not only did I contribute to my school community, but I also gained a number of skills, which are: oral and written communication; problem-solving; and time management.  I have also acquired these skills in my studies, and they definitely paid off and prepared me for the workforce, thereby contributing to my success.

On a personal basis, I volunteer as an Office Assistant at St. Maria Goretti Parish, and used to volunteer as a Community Aphasia Program Volunteer at the Aphasia Institute.  Although these involve the same skills previously mentioned, a new skill that I acquired in these two positions is providing exceptional high quality customer service.  These give me an opportunity to meet new people, get to know them, and be helpful to them.  My volunteer experience at the Aphasia Institute involved helping clients overcome language difficulties brought on by stroke, and helped me gain a deeper appreciation for the field of Speech-Language Pathology.

For my previous work experiences, I was an ESL Teaching Assistant for the Phoenix Academy of the Arts and a Research Study Assistant at UTSC's Department of Language Studies.  Now, I am embracing my new-found calling of teaching and helping students with their English skills.  Everyday is a learning experience, and I constantly look for opportunities for advancement to improve and do better each day.
