I flew 15 hours to Brazil to watch a $25,000 failure.

It was early 2023. Gummy capacity in the US was at zero. No one had room for a formula as complicated as ours.

I decided to muscle through it. I found a plant in Brazil and hoped for the best.

It was a disaster.

Our formula solidified inside their pipes. The entire line went silent. We were told to leave and not invited back.

I flew home with zero product and 15 hours to think about how I almost killed the company.

I thought I was being a scrappy founder. In reality, I was just being impatient.

In startup culture, we are told that grit is the only thing that matters. That if you just push hard enough, you can break through any wall.

But forcing a suboptimal setup isn't strategy. It’s just expensive stubbornness.

A few months later, a US plant finally had an opening. We are in 5,000+ doors now because we stopped trying to force a bad situation.

Persistence is required. But timing is what actually keeps the lights on.

We almost burned a $200,000 production run of Rotten.

The worms were mutated. They were sticky. They were not retail ready.

My manufacturer hit me with a wall of silence. As a solo founder, that is a terrifying six-figure hole in the balance sheet.

I had two choices: Eat the loss. Or turn the chaos into cash.

Most people say protect the brand at all costs. I decided to stop hiding the mess.

We launched the sticky worms at a discount. We told the literal truth. We called them a mistake.

23 million views later, that failed batch became our biggest acquisition machine ever.

The lesson is not about TikTok. It is about the fact that founders spend too much time trying to polish the brand.

People do not want the perfect version of your company. They want to be there when the lab explodes.

Stop trying to hide the mistakes. Sell them.

I’m not trying to save the world with candy.

Most food founders lead with a noble mission. They want to fix the system. They want to disrupt health.

I just want to make something you actually want to eat.

There is a massive gap between:

What people say they want. What people actually buy.

In the lab, we have a choice:

Make a virtuous product that stays on the shelf?

Or make a Rotten product that people crave?

We choose the latter every single time.

Candy isn’t a moral crusade. It’s a joy-delivery system.

If it doesn’t taste incredible, the clean ingredients don't matter.

Stop marketing to who people pretend to be. Start making things for who they actually are.

Last year at Mohegan Sun, Rotten was the brand pitching. A couple of weeks ago in Orlando, I got to be the one handing out the award.

Six months feels like a lifetime in Rotten time.

In Mohegan, our list of active UNFI distribution centers was maybe 1 or 2 lines. This year, the cheat sheet is a lot longer and the momentum is real.

If I built Rotten to please my comment section, we would be out of business.

The internet is an echo chamber. It turns tiny groups into loud movements.

As a founder, it is easy to mistake that noise for market demand.

Take our DMs for example. The volume of people asking for vegan options is high. The emotion is even higher.

But in reality, that group is a tiny fraction of the country.

If you start making R&D pivots just to stop the notifications, your startup dies.

We do not build for the loudest voices. We build for the people who actually open their wallets.

I respect the preference. I just do not run a business to serve 2 percent of the market while the other 98 percent is hungry for something else.

Founders are told to listen to their community. That is only half-true.

Listen to the people who buy. Ignore the people who just like to complain.

If what people say and what they spend do not match, always follow the money.
