Let’s be honest: most B2B content is boring AF. 

It’s often general statements and regurgitated info and basic definitions, wrapped in faux authoritative lingo. 

Before you pull out your pitchfork, let me clarify: this isn’t entirely, or even mostly, the fault of content marketers. Content teams face high publishing cadences and lead gen expectations, low bandwidth and budgets, with little leeway to lean on leadership, partners, and customers. (Not to mention peanut gallery questions like “can we optimize this?” and “can we make this go viral?”) 

All of that, if you’re not careful, can lead to an “it’s good enough” mindset.  

This mindset affects the reader—and in turn your pipeline. But it also diminishes the role of content marketing within a company. 

Content marketers can be storytellers and interpreters. They’re not just here to serve lead gen. They’re here to make their customers and audience the stars of the show. To do that, they can’t be relegated to keyword research and ill-conceived gated assets. 

That’s an issue worth fixing.

Are u closing the financial year strong?

Most important are you closing it with the team which still believes in the organisation.

Or are you hunting for people like chasing for funds?

I was recently speaking with a Fundraising Director who said something that we all can learn from:

“Year-end is not just about fund utilisation. It is also about team retention.”
And it made me pause.

In the social sector, we are constantly in motion raising funds, building strategies, strengthening donor relationships, ensuring flawless execution.
We obsess over sustainability.

But tell me honestly…

What sustains the organisation when the people behind the mission feel invisible?

Your team is not just operational support.
They are institutional memory.
They carry donor trust.
They protect program quality.
They hold the culture together when things get hard.

Yet appreciation often becomes transactional.
- A retreat is planned.
- A dinner is organised.
- A team outing is checked off the list.

Those are good gestures but they don’t build belonging.

People stay where they feel valued.

Not where they are occasionally rewarded.

As leaders, here are a few questions worth reflecting on before the year closes:

• When was the last time you acknowledged someone’s contribution in a room full of peers?

• Do your team members know how directly their work influences funding and impact?

• Are you investing in their growth or only in organisational expansion?

• Have you created psychological ownership, or just assigned responsibilities?

Because here is the reality most organisations learn too late:
👉 Funders invest in organisations.
👉 But organisations run on people.

If your best people walk out, your strongest proposals will eventually weaken.

Retention is not an HR function.
It is a leadership responsibility.

And the organisations that understand this don’t just survive funding cycles.
They build institutions.
