Let’s be honest: most B2B content is boring AF. 

It’s often general statements and regurgitated info and basic definitions, wrapped in faux authoritative lingo. 

Before you pull out your pitchfork, let me clarify: this isn’t entirely, or even mostly, the fault of content marketers. Content teams face high publishing cadences and lead gen expectations, low bandwidth and budgets, with little leeway to lean on leadership, partners, and customers. (Not to mention peanut gallery questions like “can we optimize this?” and “can we make this go viral?”) 

All of that, if you’re not careful, can lead to an “it’s good enough” mindset.  

This mindset affects the reader—and in turn your pipeline. But it also diminishes the role of content marketing within a company. 

Content marketers can be storytellers and interpreters. They’re not just here to serve lead gen. They’re here to make their customers and audience the stars of the show. To do that, they can’t be relegated to keyword research and ill-conceived gated assets. 

That’s an issue worth fixing.

International Women's Day is less than a week away and last friday a very good male friend/digital marketing recruiter told me:

"We ask all our talent who they follow on LinkedIn and pretty much everyone says a *male* figure."

SERIOUSLY????!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯

He even told me about a community he is in that he is ashamed to admit feels like "Men in PPC"!!!!!

This is tiring!!

I could write a long epistle about what the problem is and who's fault it is. But - i've done that already.

So I am going to do something different. Three things specifically:

- I am bringing back Women Crush Wednesday. Where every Wednesday I highlight a woman that is kicking a$$ in the Paid Search world. We won't need to have met. If I see you doing good sh!t, my audience WILL see it too. 

- I have created a Women in PPC slack channel in the PPC Live Slack where I will regularly share tips on being better seen on social media platforms and encourage people to shar their posts so that a community of amazing women can re-share and engage with them.

- Every week in the PPC Live newsletter I will share a LinkedIn post from a woman who has shared something impactful in PPC.

These are just my first three steps. There will probably be more across the podcasts and the people I invite to speak at SMX advanced and more. We need to see more diversity and the new set of talent in our industry need to know unequivocally that there are women doing amazing work in our industry as well.

I will be here for hours if i tried listing all of them. I have an excel doc full of them.

Want to hear one of the most significant success stories of PPC Live?

Well, I was having a conversation with one of our trusted recruiters Alexis Wilkie, and he told me how at one of the events, one of our past speakers Basak Odemis was chatting to him about how one of her friends was looking for a role. 

Alexis put her in touch with one of his contacts and a few months later that friend had a job. 

The saying goes that you can lead a horse to water but you can't force them to drink. 

Sometimes I feel like PPC Live is a big ol ocean that I have brought to people's door steps to drink but some are out here being tired and saying they can't afford the events. 

My advice - make friends! Friends from the community you're in. Make use of the ocean in front of you. 

LinkedIn, Reed, Indeed - they aren't trying to get you a job. They aren't speaking about you when you are not in the room. 

Find people who will....from the community you are already a part of.

Where does my confidence come from?

That is a good question!! I come from a family of PhD holders and CEOs. 

I don't have a PhD, and is the CEO title really in my future?? 🤷‍♀️ 

And a lot of times having people in my family who totally don't get what I do can be a little discouraging. When I first told a family member that I was starting PPC Live...I may as well have told him that the DOW is at 50,000. 

Just a complete blank stare as he went on with his weekly grocery shopping. 

So where has my confidence come from? Well regardless of what it means to be a black female in a white male dominated industry -  I can say that I am grateful to my parents raising me in a bit of an echo chamber of "the only way to success is hard work".

I've always had a "well, who is going to stop me" spirit about what I do and that no-one else is coming to save me / give me a hand out. 

And maybe that’s it. My confidence doesn’t come from titles, validation or someone else understanding the vision. It comes from knowing I’ll outwork doubt (even mine), outlast blank stares, and keep building anyway. CEO or not. PhD or not. If the door isn’t open, I’ll knock. If no one answers, I’ll build my own.

I am proudly kicking off the return of my Woman Crush Wednesday posts by giving a massive WCW shoutout to the brilliant Susan Richards-Benson. 😍 

Susan is accomplished in the digital marketing field and has been doing it very well for close to 20 years. 

It's a personal pleasure as well that she is part of the PPC Live community and has been on PPC Live The Podcast (episode 322) sharing how she overcame the big headache of an account suspension during a busy time. 

I am also immensely grateful to her activity in our community especially with how she has been key in getting the conversation going in our Slack group.

Be who you say you are - a phrase many have heard. For me, it goes deeper. We need to be who we preach to others.

It's common to encounter someone who advises a certain behavior or mindset but doesn’t practice it themselves. 

Consider this: would you take the advice of "don't lose your temper" from someone known for frequently losing theirs? Or the suggestion to "be more patient" from someone lacking patience? What about the call for everyone to come into the office from someone who prefers to work from home?

While it may be beneficial for the receiver to separate the advice from the advisor, as leaders, we must take responsibility for the guidance we provide. We need to hold ourselves accountable and understand why someone might not take our advice seriously.

Recently, I shared with a friend and PPC Live Ambassador that I love the saying, "gratitude is a great motivator for people to do more for you." Moments later, I paid for his lunch to express my gratitude for all he has done.

It’s that simple: don’t just be who you say you are; be who you advise others to be.
