What to do when you’re not sure what to do:
Get disciplined.

Make your bed when everything feels out of control
Hit the gym when motivation is missing
Follow up with leads when sales are slow:

Save cash when the economy feels uncertain
Build relationships when you don’t “need” anything yet

What to do when you’re not sure what to do:
Raise your standards.

3) PRESENCE: Show up consistently where decisions get made (content, podcasts, partnerships, earned media).
4) PATH: Make it easy to say yes (clear offer, clear next step, clear expectation).

After 30+ years in strategy + PR, I’ve seen this repeatedly: visibility isn’t ego: it’s leverage. And it compounds when you systematize it.

If you had to tighten your focus to ONE “lane” you want to be chosen for this year, what would it be?

No business is immune to crisis: product failures, viral complaints, or data breaches can strike any time. How you respond determines whether you strengthen or damage your reputation. Yet, while 54% of small businesses have faced major crises, just 23% had a formal communication plan. The difference between lasting damage and resilience is preparation. 

Crisis communications is more than reacting; it’s about strategic planning, decisive action, and consistent messaging. Build your plan: list top crisis scenarios, pre-approve messaging, assign one spokesperson, keep contacts current, clarify communication channels, and review with legal. Select key staff to fill crisis roles and empower them with training.

Your team must always be informed first; employees are your best advocates. Respond fast, be transparent, own your actions, and document everything for ongoing improvement.

Review your plan quarterly. Consult with  legal council before releasing statements. Delays and mixed messages are the quickest way to lose trust.

Leverage has evolved.

Uber Has Officially Exited Tanzania. What Really Happened?

After nearly 10 years in Tanzania, Uber shut down its operations on January 30, 2026. No long press conference. No detailed explanation. Just a message to users saying “this chapter comes to an end.”

But chapters don’t end randomly.

Uber entered Tanzania in June 2016, launching in Dar es Salaam and introducing many of us to:

- App-based ride hailing
- Cashless payments
- Dynamic pricing

At the time, it felt revolutionary.

Fast forward to 2026, and the story looks very different.


🇹🇿 Tanzania Is Not an Easy Market

Uber didn’t just face competition.
It faced local reality.

In 2022, Uber suspended operations after new government regulations introduced:

- Fare caps
- Commission limits
- Stronger consumer protection

Uber returned in early 2023, but by then the market had changed.


🥊 Enter the Undisputed Champion: Bolt 

Let’s be honest  Uber didn’t lose to regulation alone.

It lost to Bolt.

In Tanzania, “request Bolt” is no longer a brand reference, it’s a household phrase for ride hailing. Bolt localized faster, priced smarter, and aligned better with both drivers and passengers.

Meanwhile, Uber struggled with:

- The unpopular TZS 3,000 ride cancellation fee
- Pricing that felt rigid to consumers
- A model that didn’t fully adapt to local cost dynamics

In a price-sensitive market, small frictions become big deal-breakers.


📉 A Bigger Lesson for Global Tech Companies

Uber’s exit sends a clear message:

"You don’t just launch in Tanzania. You adapt, localize, and negotiate your way into relevance."

Local competitors understand:

- How people earn
- How people pay
- How people complain
- How regulators think

And that knowledge compounds over time.

What This Means Going Forward

- Tanzania remains open for innovation, but not at any cost
- Regulation here is not anti-tech, it’s pro-balance
- Local and regional platforms are no longer “alternatives” they are default choices

Uber’s exit doesn’t mean ride hailing failed.
It means the market chose its winner.
