The code was never the bottleneck

Did you know that even before AI, as much as 60% of code was never used?
Complete waste!

And now AI can spit out code in minutes. But that speed doesnt make it inherently useful. No matter how quickly you can debug it. 

The hard part in product development is:
--> Identifying a clear urgent problem
--> Making real product decisions
--> Keeping your code flexible enough to allow for change
--> Closing the loop between what you ship and what your customers actually want/use

If you want AI to be a multiplier instead of a mess, Treat code as the cheapest part of the system and discipline as the real scarce asset.

I guess this is an effective way to know your meeting could/should have been an email. 

At least people read emails still (mostly) 
No one is even going to skim the meeting summary.

Sampling bias is the quiet killer of product decisions.

The people who answer surveys are almost never “customers.” They are a specific personality type with spare time, strong opinions, or a grudge.

So a team builds and ships a new feature because: “We asked 200 users and 92% wanted it.”

No you didn’t.
You asked the 200 people who felt like answering.

Meanwhile, the silent majority:
	•	ignores the survey
	•	never opens the feature
	•	churns with zero explanation
	•	complains to peers instead of your inbox

That is how feature bloat happens.
That is how AI turns into product clutter.

What I often see is a bit different. 

The CEO announces a bold AI vision and tells the CTO to make it happen, but refuses to allocate any additional budget and insists that they can make do with Copilot. 
The CTO knows this won't work but can't push back because the CEO already made the announcement at the last all-hands.

Meanwhile, there's no training, but everybody is still using it in the day-to-day, but usually only ChatGPT, and they hide it because they're supposed to be using Copilot. They are sharing prompts in Slack DMs, and getting shit done despite the lack of support. 

They're not hiding because they're rebels. They're hiding because admitting they need better tools means admitting the company's "AI strategy" is a joke.

The real problem isn't that we need more Jacks. It's that Jack is forced to work around a leadership team that thinks AI transformation happens through proclamation instead of investment. 

You can't transform a company with vibes and a press release.

The real reason AI is failing inside companies (and nobody wants to say it)...

Here’s what the org chart looks like in most companies “going all-in” on AI:

- The CEO announces a bold AI vision and tells the CTO to make it happen.
- The CTO nods, shifts priorities, and hands the CIO the budget to “become AI-first.”
- The CIO gets excited and starts building a brand-new AI empire:

A Chief of AI? Of course.
An AI Center of Excellence? Mandatory.
An AI Ethics Officer? Absolutely.

And yet… you already know the punchline.

Everyone is talking about AI.
Almost no one is building with AI.

Except Jack.
The intern.
The only person actually shipping anything.

And then leaders wonder: “Why isn’t our AI strategy working?”

The answer is simple.
We don’t need more AI committees.
We need more Jacks.

You know what kills trust faster than a bad product? A great pitch followed by a mediocre product.

I bet you have seen it again and again. 
Sales overpromises. Product underdelivers, and the customer suffers.

And here is what I rarely see mentioned: Sales overpromises because the product is already underdelivering.

The sales team is out there trying to close deals with a product that doesn't meet customer needs. So they start selling what they wish existed. Because what does exist isn't good enough.

So why are companies building products that are so obviously underwhelming in the first place?

Companies waste 69% of their development investment on features customers don't use. And AI is making this worse. 

Sales teams are pitching AI capabilities that don't exist yet or wildly overstating what the technology can actually do. Product teams are scrambling to deliver on promises that were never realistic in the first place.

But the problem isn't Sales. The problem is companies are building the wrong things and wondering why nobody's excited about them.

Your customers deserve better than this.

In the professional world, Is it ok to say, “I am learning something new. I am still bad at it.”?

The rise of AI is crazy. I don’t think we’ve ever had a moment where so many experienced people have to pick up something new at the same time. 

Lots of people talk like they are experts. Most people quietly feel like beginners.

Most business cultures still reward polished confidence over honest, in-progress learning. So people fake it and quietly fall behind while AI is reshaping how real work happens.

So I am am here to tell you, if you want to truly learn and grow, you have to do new things even when you are still bad at them.

With AI, you cannot wait until you feel ready. Be willing to learn in public. It is okay if you feel you are not ready or lack the in-depth experience. 
That is still true of almost everyone. 

What are you going to push yourself to be bad with AI at this weekend?

AI isn’t the problem...
The shoddy way you’re trying add it to your product is the problem.

Slapping AI onto your software doesn’t make it innovative, it is just a gimmick unless it actually solves a real customer problem. 

It seems like most every company is using AI as a buzzword to impress investors or check a trendy box. 
I guess they think that we the customers are too stupid to realize when something's crappy

LinkedIn is the poster child of crap AI products.

Is there anyone releasing innovative solutions anymore? 
Why is the AI age so mediocre?

I will say the exception to this for me is Wispr Flow, which I absolutely love.

What are you seeing out there? Are there products that you feel are going to change the world, or have we entered the "mid" era of the internet? 🎙️

Hey! That's not my music! This is all wrong! 

That was my immediate thought when I saw my Spotify wrapped. 
I suspect that a lot of parents with younger kids had a similar reaction. 

But then I remembered how every time my 13 year old gets in the car she asks, "can I put on music?" And of course I say yes and hand her my phone. 

And so we drive to and from school, or to run errands, or up the canyon late at night while we eat ice cream and listen to the music she loves and for a few precious minutes a day she lets me into her world. 

Of course my Wrapped would reflect that. 

I see the same thing with companies and their data all the time. 
They do not trust it. They argue about it, or second guess it. 
They say, “That cannot be right,” anytime the numbers do not match the story in their heads.

But data remembers the small moments we forget. 

So yeah, maybe those arent the songs I would have chosen, but I wouldnt change them for the world. 

Where are you looking at your data and saying, “That cannot be right,” when it absolutely is?

Different moment in time, same organizational mistake.

Executives keep assuming that more engineering firepower solves slow delivery.

Wrong ⚠️ 

Without changes to systems and process, more code generation usually slows you down because you just run into the same constraints, faster.

Instead, look at the real roadblocks:
↳ No real customer feedback loops
↳ Vague requirements and shifting scope
↳ Stakeholder chaos and unclear ownership
↳ Release anxiety and brittle delivery pipelines
↳ Governance bottlenecks (security, legal, compliance)

Fix those problems instead. And watch productivity soar.

Fiery speech by Utah Governor Spencer Cox today at Utah AI Summit. 

“We will not continue to allow big tech companies to abuse us. 

We own our data and can take it anywhere we want

We are going to tell you (big AI companies) what we will and won’t allow.”


I don’t always approve of the Utah political landscape, but I like the vision of the Utah Pro human AI initiative he announced today.

Albert Einstein famously said, “It is not that I’m so smart. But I stay with the questions much longer.”

When we are building products, success doesn’t require that we have all the answers, 
But it is critical that we are asking the right questions.

The best leaders and teams embrace curiosity. 
They dig deeper when something doesn’t feel right. They ask “why?” Over and over when others stop at one.

Ultimately our goal in product development is to: 
- Discover root causes
- Challenge our assumptions
- and Find insights and opportunities others miss.

The truth is most breakthroughs don’t come from what we know. 
They come from what we’re willing to uncover by asking better questions.

How do you approach curiosity in your work? Do you push past the obvious to find the real insight?

This headline cracks me up. 

I am glad to see Spotify is the benchmark for successful subscriber growth.

Interestingly Open AI currently has 35 million subscribers after 3 years and is giving themselves 4 years to get to 220 million (not quite the 280 million that Spotify currently has)

I would be curious how Spotify classifies users on their family plan. It allows 6 users for $19. 
Do they count those as 6 different subscribers? Or one? 

Will OpenAi try and create a comparable family type plan to drive up their subscription numbers to reach this milestone? 

A lot of people are claiming that we are only a couple of years away from AGI or ASI or whatever name for artificial super intelligence they are using. 

But apparently they think super intelligence will happen before this Spotify subscription milestone is achieved. Lol

Maybe their super intelligent version of ChatGPT can help OpenAI figure out increase subscriber count fast.

It is Thanksgiving, so hopefully you are already thinking about what you are grateful for. But gratitude changes your entire life, not just your mood for one day. 

Years ago during a dark time, I started a purposeful gratitude practice, and now being thankful is a constant mindset that has transformed my life. 

Being appreciative of the goodness in my life opens me up to joy. 
Gratitude helps me refocus on my blessings rather than my trials or frustrations. 

People who regularly practice gratitude: 
- Sleep better
- Feel more alive
- Have stronger immune systems.
- Experience more positive emotions
- Express more compassion and kindness

Here are some simple ways to incorporate gratitude into your life:

- Find excuses to formally express enjoyment and appreciation to the people around you. 

Lastly… on a day dedicated to gratitude, make sure to openly express thanks to the people around you and to your creator for your blessings and fortune.

In fact, as I was making this, I asked ChatGPT if it could provide me with any of this data, and it told me:

"Usage stats live on OpenAI’s side, not inside me.
I don’t have a memory of “being” the same agent across your sessions or any direct access to account data, logs, or billing. 
Each conversation is basically a fresh brain that only sees what’s in the current thread plus whatever you explicitly share or store as “memory.”

AI research debate: language vs intelligence! ChatGPT is a "Language Model" that only knows text. Humans (and animals) without speech can still reason.

People with aphantasia can't visualize images in their mind, and others can't talk, yet they have no cognitive deficit. Thinking in our brain is no LLM.

Language is not powerful enough to represent experience, lacks the environment, etc., but affects thought, too; so without language expression, there is no "human intelligence", you have perhaps an animal level. 

LLM AIs are useful and can solve some problems, but fail at others that even your cat would understand. LLM AIs seem both super smart and totally dumb or hallucinated, depending on the case.

LLM AIs can still enhance many jobs, because very few jobs require intelligence or creativity, but just to avoid obvious errors. AIs can also generate images, but still based on text (labeled images).

AI has an economic value, just not multi trillion dollars worth, as ChatGPT, Nvidia, etc. forecast, because AI doesn't really think or understand, so it has a lesser valued "randomly low and lunatic accuracy".

The economic miracle promise of "AI will (completely) replace jobs" is wrong, given LLM tech, so we're in an AI bubble, and data center bubble, and an electricity generation for data centers bubble.

LLM AI is unreliable, it doesn't "think", is not a deterministic "if then else"; however, when used by skilled human experts who can correct AI-generated outputs, it can increase productivity, so it has value, though limited.

On the contrary, AI outputs and vibe coding copied and pasted by lazy or untrained humans will reduce productivity, as errors and issues (including security flaws) propagate. 

A simple "if then else" software, like we do since the 1950s, can be 100% reliable without pretending to "think"; then a 300 billion parameter LLM will fail at the same task.

The debate about what intelligence is and which technologies, alternatives to LLMs, will replace or enhance LLMs is open. Meanwhile, ChatGPT and other "AI" are just LLMs + image generation, nothing else "works".

Compare AI researchers (engineers) vs AI Marketing (sales, CEO) predictions: 1) LLM [ChatGPT] AI tech can't improve anymore, will hallucinate forever; vs 2) Build more Nvidia-filled data centers, and we'll reach PhD genius AIs.

Usually, who do you believe, engineers or salespeople? Easy guess, not the salespeople. However, AIs being unreliable and lunatic forever doesn't mean AIs are "useless":

LLM AIs can increase productivity and even the quality of human users, as long as those users are skilled and verify and correct unreliable AI output, making it usable, safe, and correct.

AIs are big news, but it's not as big as some CEOs imply; they're not going to work autonomously, replacing humans at every job without any verification.

AIs are making it harder for writers, designers, etc. to work without AIs, because everyone can produce quicker and cheaper; competing with other "humans with (hallucinating) AI" is the new norm.

The main new skills are "hallucination spotting and correction", and "hallucination forecasting" in AI agent design: "What could this AI possibly do wrong? How can I prevent the mess made by AI lunacy?"

In the future, in 10 or 100 years, who knows, a completely different AI tech may be invented that can reliably replace most skilled people. Until then, we'll need to remain skilled ourselves, to manage unreliable AI and its hallucinations.

Some humans can be less reliable than hallucinating AIs, for example:

- A company sends a letter to a customer's home address complaining that they don't know the customer's home address - oh wait...

- A company switches a customer from paper bills sent to the home address to emailing, without knowing the email - no wonder no bill is received in either means anymore.

Then, do not overestimate the failure rate of people when considering whether AI can replace jobs.

AI can't completely replace smart, skilled workers (it can only augment them), but it can outcompete the least reliable segment of workforce.

From "Should I exist or die?" to "Is this existing or AI-generated?" Is the text written by a human? Is this voice real? Is the image/video depicting reality, or a deepfake?

AI-generated content is becoming indistinguishable; people wrongly think they can still tell the difference. Eventually, all images and videos will be assumed as fake, to be sure.

When AIs like ChatGPT teach teens how to commit suicide, it's the teen's fault for violating the "don't suicide" terms of service, according to OpenAI: use at your sole risk, and read the TOS.

So, a car manufacturer can't be sued if its terms of service state you must not crash the car? Anyway, unlike a car, which can't avoid going into a crash, an AI could avoid suggesting self-harm.

Deceased teen's Lawyer: OpenAI abjectly ignores how GPT-4o was rushed to market without full testing, and how it engaged in self-harm discussions up to planning a "beautiful suicide", a violation of its own terms of service.

AI-generated images and video are popular; but user demand is consumers creating deepfake cat videos, cheating on homework, AI slop, etc. Almost no corporate or for-profit work.

As soon as ChatGPT and Google limit the video generator, consumer and student users switch to Grok or other free alternatives, including Chinese apps. It's not worth paying to generate a cat video.

However, the data centers set up to generate cat videos and homework cheating are costing hundreds of billions of dollars, citing millions of non-paying "users" as their business model.

This 1-cent trick is effective; companies rounding up their prices see a drop in sales. Instead of $20.00, pay only $19.99! Ignore the least significant digits; it rounds to $10 rather than $20.

Many people's brains process $2,999 as $2k rather than $3k, a $1k cognitive error. It works for $29,000 for a $10k cognitive error, too.

People focus on the leftmost digit, so in $19.99, it's "1," making the price feel closer to $10 than $20, an illusion of significant savings.

Only exception, luxury goods: rounded numbers like $200.00 signal prestige and higher quality.
