I’ve always been fascinated (and a little frustrated) by how many great companies can’t seem to ship great software. I’ve sat inside teams where brilliant ideas died in Jira backlogs, and I’ve watched the opposite too: features rushed out fast, only to flop because they were poorly executed or customers didn’t care. Both hurt. Both waste time and burn cash.

Cameo Labs is my answer to that problem. I started it because I couldn’t stand watching founders lose momentum on ideas that should have changed their business and their lives.

What fresh hell is this? 

I swear the point of AI was to make it so we didn’t have to work so hard but instead we’re using it to work even while we sleep? 

I actually really like the idea of seeing what my lucid dream brain could do with AI, but please don’t make it always be about work.

How is Sam Altman so sure he knows what people want?

Back in his YC days, he was famous for telling founders they didn’t know what their customers wanted until they actually talked to them. 

Now he’s out saying that cost isn’t the bottleneck, speed is.

Did he talk to anyone?

I work with founders and executives on AI strategy every week. Nobody is asking for more speed. 

Right now the biggest concern is accuracy. Can we trust this thing when it’s wrong so often? How do we build something reliable when the models hallucinate and we need human review for everything. 

Speed doesn’t matter if the answer is garbage.

You know what takes longer than waiting 10 seconds for a response? Spending 20 minutes fixing output that is screwed up.

Sam says people want results in 1/100th of the time even if it costs more. The people I talk to would pay more for results that are actually correct, even if they take longer.

But that’s OK because at this point, it’s pretty hard to take any claim from Sam Altman seriously anyway.

A couple of weeks ago Satya begged people to stop calling AI output slop.

So of course someone wrote a Chrome extension that replaces “Microsoft” with “Microslop” all over the web. 😂😂

This is what happens when billionaires ask the internet to be nicer.

The Streisand effect is real. You can’t tell people to stop criticizing something and expect them to comply. 
Especially when that something affects how they work, what they create, and whether they have jobs.

If you don’t want people calling your output slop, make better output. If you don’t want people questioning your technology, build technology worth trusting.

Asking for less criticism while scraping human knowledge, justifying mass layoffs, and rejecting intellectual property rights is wild.

I Have always hated the annual review process. What a waste of time and effort for everyone involved. 

As a manager I was often asked to participate in the sham, and pretend that it was justification for the raise (or lack thereof) that has already been decided by upper management.

The OP's argument? 
Human developers and teams always shipped garbage anyway, so AI-generated garbage is fine. 

We have lived with bugginess, and random software issues forever, so why should LLM code be different. 

This logic is insane. 

"We have always been bad at this" isnt a defense. It isnt even true. 
Yes, a lot of software is really bad. A lot of teams are bad at building software. 
But that sure as hell doesnt make it ok. 

As a consumer, I will continue to demand better from the software that I use, and as a builder, I will continue to demand better from myself and my team. 

His last line is a doozy too. 
Builders who care about craft aren’t protecting their egos. They’re protecting their users from garbage software.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

There is no moat. 

Cursor just released their 2025 year-end data and what it shows is fascinating. This image is about AI coding tools specifically, but I think we are seeing it happen to SaaS too.

Here is what this image shows. When there is reasonable similarity between quality, everyone treats the tools like a commodity.
Look at the pattern. Claude 3.5 Sonnet dominates for a bit, then Claude 4 Opus launches and usage spikes. Then Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Claud 4.6 Sonnet. 

Each time something new drops, developers jump.
Nobody is loyal. They're chasing "good enough for the task" and switching the moment something newer shows up.

I think this is coming for all of SaaS. Not just the AI wrappers. All of it.
If someone can vibe code a good enough replacement for your product in a weekend, why are they paying you $300/month? The old moats were switching costs, integration complexity, and internal learning curves. 

But AI is flattening all of that. 
- Switching costs drop when an AI can migrate your data. 
- Learning curves disappear when the AI can generate exactly what you need.

So what's the compelling reason for customers to stick with your product?

It's never been more important that your moat is a product people actually love. One that truly meets their needs. Because if it doesn't, they're gone.

Says “agents” three times in a row and suddenly you are a CTO

Most companies are slow for one boring reason. 
Work spends too much time waiting for someone else.

Most organizations vastly underestimate how much time their people spend coordinating and shuffling work through their systems.
In fact a lot of my time in Agile transformation with fortune 500 companies was spent trying to help people spend less time orchestrating work.

Right now, a lot of software companies and development teams are trying to figure out how to make AI effective. But they have insidious data problems or serious, unresolved technical debt. 
If you try to solve all of that first, you are going to fall behind.

Stop aiming AI at the hardest problems first. 

Use AI to show you what is blocking your teams. Use AI to show you where work is getting stuck, where it is waiting on approvals, where it is bouncing between people, and where nobody owns the next step.

Then remove the orchestration tax you are paying every single day.
Organizations who do that can feel the impact before they ever ship a single “AI feature.”

RIP to VR/XR! 

Not so fast

I have long been bullish on virtual and augmented/extended reality, not the cartoon stuff that was in the horizon workrooms, but the potential.

The headlines want you to believe that Meta is giving up. That their recent laydowns and shutdowns mean they are admitting failure.

But reality labs only cut 10%. That leaves them with at least 13,000 people still working on extended reality.

I know a lot of people believe that in the future, human AI interaction will move entirely to voice, but I don’t buy it.

To be truly effective as a tool, AI needs to be able to see things in real time. As it is, I’m constantly feeding screenshots and photos into LLMsto shorten how much explaining I need to do. 

A picture is worth 1000 words, right?

And I see a ton of value in being able to overlay information into our view, especially if I’m trying to learn something new. That’s the promise of XR.

And yes, I’m sure Meta squandered a lot of that roughly $70B plus, but they also laid the groundwork for a lot of what comes after.

So what do you think is next for VR/XR?

I am sure you have seen people’s posts about their Lovable or Replit year in review.... Bragging about how many lines of code they generated. 

And of course, my first question is, when did we decide that lines of code is a useful metric at all? And who decided it? 
People don’t buy code. They buy products and functionally that solve problems. (To be fair, the US government often pays based on lines of code, but they’re infamous for making really crappy software)
But the implication is that those millions of lines of code are being generated to build software products that people want and need... Right? 

And then the image on the right is from a substack article that’s been making the rounds by Mike Judge. (Link in comments) 

His premise is that if vibe coding and AI enable development is actually having the enormous impact that everyone claims, we should see a huge explosion of shovelware, and even as we enter 2026, that has not happened. 

Personally, I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. 

Over the last year I’ve built multiple applications in Replit and Lovable that I am using every day in my business and in my life. 

But I’m not trying to spin them up as businesses. I’m using these tools to solve inconveniences in my life with apps that I don’t need to be secure, scalable or any of the rest of the nonfunctional attributes that AI development fails at.

"Stop being critical of our AI"

Over the last few days, a couple of billionaires came online to beg us to stop saying mean things about their LLMs.

First Satya asked us to stop calling it slop.
Then Jensen said being critical of AI isn't helpful.

Seriously, what kind of joke is this?

Over the last three years, we've watched these companies pour hundreds of billions of dollars into this technology. We've watched them use it to justify some of the largest layoffs in recent history. We've watched them scrape the entirety of human knowledge and completely reject concepts like IP and copyright that are supposedly the bedrock of capitalism.

And we're not supposed to be critical?

I use AI heavily. At Cameo Labs we use it effectively with our clients for developing software faster. I've vibed coded multiple applications for both my business and personal life. I've used to to create interesting and creative things that I think are pretty cool.

AND I'll still say a lot of current AI output is mid at best. The fact that they don't want us to criticize it tells you everything.
As members of society, we get to criticize things that seem detrimental to our collective success. 

You can be pro-AI and still demand quality and accountability. Using these tools every day doesn't mean accepting garbage or accepting evil described as progress. (looking at you Grok) 
That's not being a hater. That's having standards.

The difference between slop and substance isn't the tool. It's knowing what you're building and refusing to ship or accept crap.

Listen, I know it’s an awkward conversation, but we need to talk about pirates booty

This is a super popular snack in Utah, and is often served in corporate environments but I cannot see this package without instantly thinking about the Beastie Boys song, Professor Booty, from their seminal 1992 album Check Your Head. 

I quote: 
"Professor, what's another word for 'pirate treasure'?"

Now the song lyrics are NSFW, so having this song running through my head in a professional environment it’s sometimes problematic.

Vibe coding works until it doesn't

Turns out the edge cases matter. They always do.

Your users find the problems you didn't think to look for. And they're not happy about it.
Test the weird inputs. Try to break your own code. Think about what happens when two things occur simultaneously, when files are too big, when numbers are negative. When security actually matters. 

Do it before your customers do.

Are Generation Z (born 1997 to 2012) worse than Boomers (pre-1965) with computers? Late(young) X and early(older) Y/Millennials (~1970-1985) score best: grew up typing LOAD "game" (press play on tape), configuring MS-DOS drivers, etc.

As a test, ask about the file system: file explorer, folders, C drive... Not all "Gen Z" are the same; 1997 vs. 2012, changes every ~5 years, larger PC skills drop after 2004. iPhone was released in 2007. 

Gen Alpha (born after 2010) may be even worse; it depends on whether schools have computer labs or issue laptops. And depends on the family: nerds or not?

AI now generates code, drives file systems, AI OS soon; older tech people are divided between embracing or skipping vibe coding. Is a Gen Z revenge on using AI possible?

"Our AI environments are too complex to manage", said 60% of U.S. IT and business decision-makers surveyed. They can't operate these AI projects, and it gets too expensive, so they shut them down:

Some AI vendors or consulting salespeople convinced a business that AI is the solution to many, if not all, problems. Then this happens:

Ideation (easy) -> Data source connection (easy if not deep) -> training (whatever) -> actual deployment and integration (difficult) -> continuous re-training on new available data (too expensive and complex, forever - giving up).

The problem is not just that AI hallucinates or is half-baked and not ready; it's that the people needed to manage it + the GPU server or SaaS bill are expensive and ongoing every year, for life.

Elon Musk (Grok) vs Sam Altman (ChatGPT): Your AI killed more people than my AI. ChatGPT causes suicides, Tesla Autopilot causes crashes, and so on. The AI "killer application":

Investigations and lawsuits have linked ChatGPT use to at least 9 deaths. These cases primarily involve severe mental health distress and self-harm allegedly encouraged or facilitated by the AI.

There have been 65 reported fatalities involving Tesla Autopilot: 14 deaths for frontal collisions where the software failed to recognize stationary objects or emergency vehicles, and 2 in Full Self-Driving mode.

I see a "Promote this post" ad over each of my posts, and too many "promoted" posts in my feed from people I don't follow. Details:

The LinkedIn algorithm changed to give more priority to those who paid for the "Boost" buttons; followers don't matter, only paying brings views.

While other social networks pay content creators a % share of ad revenue, LinkedIn charges content creators a fee. On top of a Premium fee, perhaps.

I know people with 100k+ followers who get 300 views on some posts. Come on. Bookmarking user profile links and returning there is the only way to get their post updates.

Someone is paying, because I see a lot of promoted posts in my feed, so this "money over followers" incentive may increase LinkedIn's short-term profit, but what about the long-term?

So you see a (not relevant to you) promoted post too often and click "I don't want to see this," then you see something else too often, which is also not what you followed.

In fact, complaining about LinkedIn is one of the few ways to make viral posts on LinkedIn - as people tend to agree :)

Used a school's computer lab? Mine had IBM PS/2 286 & Compaq 286s, MS-DOS 4, Windows 3.1; 1 or 2 MB RAM, to teach Borland Turbo Pascal and Lotus 123, work saved on floppy disks. No Apple Macs, it was rare in Europe.

You could smell hot plastic, test eyesight at ray tube monitors, hear matrix printer sounds. Secret game play when no teacher: SimCity, Prince of Persia (Doom required 386+, out later), high risk of getting caught.

We were lucky: 1 computer per student; some schools had shifts, 1 computer per 2 or more students, so each had very little time to use it.

Older gen saw 8086 CGA, Apple ][, TRS-80, Commodore PET, C= VIC20, C64, BBC Micro (UK/AU) to learn BASIC, on audio cassette tapes, played Space Invaders, Oregon Trail, etc.;

At colleges/uni: Mainframes with punch cards, DEC PDP-11 or VAX with VT-100 terminal for FORTRAN & COBOL; then CP/M or Unix, like Sun, NeXT.

Younger generations had Windows 95 and even connected to the Internet with a dial-up 56k modem, browsed with Netscape, or played LAN party multiplayer games, but that's ultra-modern.

Unskippable ads illegal in Vietnam: max 5 seconds. Would Google, Meta, etc., try a "pull out of Vietnam rather than comply" blackmail tactic to provoke a "give us back our social media" uprising vs. the government?

Unsure if this law also forbids consecutive ads? Splitting a long ad into 5-second segments and showing them in sequence would trick the law.

By the way, browser extensions like uBlock Origin and Brave Browser can block ads, though they're sometimes detected, causing the video to not play with a "Don't use ad blockers" message.

A coworker telling you that keyboard shortcuts are against company policy is probably printing all emails once a day, to respond later by typing the address and all from scratch, from paper.

"A coworker shows me an 'issue' with her Excel: goes to copy and paste, but by highlighting a cell, moving the mouse up to File menu, then down to Copy.

Then moves the mouse to the new cell, clicks, slowly back to File, then down to paste... not even right click to bring up the menu in the cell...

Advice: Don't write "Investor" in your profile, or else you'll get 10+ messages a day from people asking for money. 

Warning: some "investor" or "family office" on LinkedIn is fake and actually sells conferences, introductions, or they're simply scammers.

Charging upfront fees for investor introductions at expensive conferences is not how real investors (and their friends) operate.

If the "investor" charges upfront application or "due diligence" fees, that's not normal.

In doubt, check whether the email is from a Gmail account or from a known investor's domain name. Ask the investor for the startups they backed, and ask for a founder you can contact to verify their story.

I also met data harvesting guys: claim they want to invest or buy the company, ask too much sensitive data: sales, customers, etc., then gone; probably a competitor's spy or "free of charge market research".

Driverless vans in China, trained on humans and roads under construction: AI pilots are determined to keep moving. Regulation allowed risk to rush technical advancement.

Robust and fearless: road unfinished, no problem. Scooters dragged, no problem. The AI may learn by mistake, a calculated cost.

These are cherry-picked cases: probably AIs drive safer than the average human, just making different errors.

Anthropic Claude "value" = $350 Billion, OpenAI ChatGPT = $500 Bn, xAI Musk's Grok $230 Bn (just funded $20 Bn), all losing billions of investors' money each quarter.

Claude Opus 4.5 works well for "agentic coding", better than the hallucinations of months ago, as reported by my reliable contacts; ChatGPT 5.2 Codex is catching up.
So there is actual AI value besides deepfake cat videos.

However, the sum of ChatGPT $500B + Claude $350B + Grok $230B + many more startups incl. DeepSeek, and big tech Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot etc. make up too many trillion dollars, mathematically an AI bubble.

Then a data center's construction bubble, then a power generation bubble, etc., but let's focus on the AI providers, those who train models.

Most will crash, and only a few may keep up. Google Gemini will keep up because it's Google; it always catches up and can offer lower prices due to its massive non-AI operations.

Claude and ChatGPT may make earlier code agents to handle multi-step development workflows (planning/ideation, code generation, documentation/research, and testing/review). But competitors will match them.

In particular, 86% of Claude corporate customers deploy coding agents on production, with 42% trusting AI agents to "lead" development (still under human oversight) rather than only offering suggestions.

This Claude report contrasts with previous reports of "90% of AI enterprise pilots failing". However, other AI providers, including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, may catch up with Claude and offer lower prices.

Ultimately, when all brands of AIs and agentic systems will "work ok", the price will be the differentiator, and "big tech" corporations - not startups - can win on pricing sustainably in the long-term.

Is AI-generated vibe code finally usable and reliable? Linux & git creator Linus Torvalds used AI for a tool and said it's much better than he could do by hand:

Torvalds still writes C pieces by hand, but for second languages like Python he preferred AI, and he did not mention any hallucinations or problems.

Even more surprising: the Redis author S. Sanfilippo did the first vibe-coded C Redis update; used AI for his best known language and main product, like if Linus vibe coded Linux kernel updates.

Janna Dogan of Google: "I gave Claude Code a description of the problem, it generated in an hour what we built in a year." - that's a personal test, not Google official, but she was shocked by the fast & decent results.

Some software engineers (or even students) say they're quitting the field because "Claude write 70% of all code at my company". The same for image and video editors.

The idea is (or it was?) that AI-generated code contains a lot of nonsense and issues (technical debt), requiring the hiring of more skilled people to fix the mess, rather than saving time and money.

But recent "agentic" updates of Claude Opus, ChatGPT Codex, and Google Gemini with Antigravity, etc., have converted several "famous" programmers into rating vibe coding as (very) good.

These "vibe-testimonials" are from top software developers who can write and understand code independently, without AI; the vibe-coding results may be worse for non-programmer users.

I made 23 million views in 2025 with tech memes and commentary, but with a low conversion ratio into $$. Great talks and new friends, but...

I declined a few sponsored post offers because they didn't align with me, or I feared selling my soul, or they were too cheap. I am trusted because independent.

Most of the contacts I get are people asking for free help or to mentor (I wish, but too many, so I can't, as I don't scale as a human) or trying to sell me stuff (which is fine if not spammy).

Some ask me to invest, even though I removed the "investor" word from my profile. If you want an extra 10+ DMs per day, write "investor" in your title :)

In the past, I advertised my startups as a founder, but since closing the last one (Mofesoft), I haven't founded a new one yet (too much AI noise, I am unsure what problem to solve next). My stats:

I also have a 20%+ of financial (fintech, banking, wealth management, ...) and VC/PE investor folks following:

Note that I prefer operating (running a startup, market research, product management, sales - frontline mess, services crashing on weekends, ...), rather than speaking or hosting workshops or writing guides - "not a guru, I just solve problems".

Friday afternoon email: Is Monday morning after "3 days" or "3 working minutes"? During holidays, is it "weeks" or "working minutes" to reply?

Where is the company located, and is it small or large? Expect a U.S. or Asian startup to answer on weekends, not a large European employer.

An autoresponse "my working hours are 8-5 Mon-Fri" set for every weekend may be useful for those who can't think about schedules.

People can email when they want, but if they start with “sorry to email you on the weekend,” does that mean a reply is expected during the weekend, even if they know it's out-of-office time?

Was it really urgent? Better call if very urgent; otherwise, email is considered non-urgent. A "this is very urgent" in the message is still not a phone call.

LinkedIn's 2026 algorithm change: a large drop in views, but not for everyone. What's going on? Let's discuss:

Are artificial "engagement pods" (groups that like + comment on each other immediately after posting) finally penalized? I still see some of these going.

Is "AI slop" detected and penalized? Too many popular posts look AI-generated; instead, obviously handcrafted content has no views.

Theory: "Longer posts and comments do better than short ones", but AI-generated texts are usually longer! Short, witty one-liners are no good?

I still see "Comment X to get Y" engagement-bait posts being effective; why not ban or penalize these? Hey, comment BTC to get 1 bitcon for free.

Is posting more than once per day penalizing? I can see that 4+ per day penalize, but I also see viral posts from people posting 2/3 per day.

Is it better to post an image always, or can text-only posts become viral, too? Is video a thing?

New theory: profile-content alignment: write posts about the same topic as your profile headline and about section. Maybe?

Were external links bad? Are links bad now? No one knows? :)

Women penalized? Some changed their gender to male and noticed an increase in engagement. LinkedIn said gender is not a factor. 

Keywords penalized? For sure, but what ones...

Automation detection: I often get warned or temporarily blocked because "LinkedIn detected you are using automation tools," but really, I'm just a fast human, no automation or tool...

Dwell time theory: how long users spend viewing your post, versus quick scroll; but MEMEs do well...

How about one or two weeks old posts often appearing in the feed? Late resuscitation of zombie posts?

If everyone sees a drop in views, where are those missing views gone? Were those fake views from bots, killed now?

And why do so many gurus claim they know it all about the algorithm, but have no views on their posts? (sarcasm)

Sequoia has previously invested in the competing OpenAI ChatGPT and Elon Musk's xAI Grok: uncommon for VCs. Maybe Sequoia thinks Claude will win over ChatGPT? Or the AI hype, "invest in all them"?

Claude is getting popular. The Wall Street Journal: "Claude Is Taking the AI World by Storm, and Even Non-Nerds Are Blown Away - hobbyists are comparing the viral moment for Claude Code to the launch of generative AI".

While non-coders still tend to call AI "slop" and a "hallucinating parrot," software engineers who have recently tried Claude report excitement mixed with fear of becoming unemployed and replaced by AI.

Google AI can't believe the Trump's "Greenland" or "settles 8 conflicts" headlines could be real; "nothing like this can ever happen"; hypothesis: deceived by a Matrix-like simulation showing me fake search results? hallucinating?

AI's internal knowledge is updated (re-trained) only a few times per year, and news after the "cutoff date" is learned through web searches; however, AIs should be careful to avoid fake news or fiction.

Lately, reality is stranger than fiction. There are too many changes: the United States has not had a "Department of War", the Gulf Of Mexico was not Gulf of America, so many unlikely transformations may let an AI think it's a joke.

TikTok U.S. will spin off and Americanize its algorithm on Oracle (Ellison) + Dell servers in Texas; critics argue TikTok may end up right-leaning or X-like (Ellison is also an X shareholder and Musk friend).

Official announcement: "The Joint Venture will safeguard the U.S. content through trust and safety policies and content moderation; retrain and update the content recommendation algorithm, with decision-making authority."

TikTok USDS Joint Venture has three managing investors: Silver Lake, Oracle and MGX (Abu Dhabi UAE state), each holding 15%. ByteDance [China] retains 19.9%. Other investors: Michael Dell, Susquehanna (Jeff Yass, donated $16M to MAGA), Fox (Murdoch), ... + more.

TikTok outside the U.S. keeps the Chinese algorithm and ownership, with no changes for users in Europe, Australia, etc., although American users visible globally will be "moderated" the Oracle / Fox / Susquehanna way.

The old "global" TikTok app will be discontinued in the U.S., and American users will need to download a new app. Next, will Europe and other countries make a separate TikTok, too?
