Most advisors compete on how well they execute.
The highest earners compete on which problems they choose to solve.

I learned this the hard way myself.

When I was running an outbound agency, I was charging $2k per project.

Sending thousands of cold emails.
Optimizing reply rates.
Doing good work.

But I hit a ceiling.

The moment I shifted back to RevOps and started solving for integrated GTM problems instead of point solutions – my pricing went up 5x within six months.

Same skill set.
Different problems.

I still remember seeing the post from Alex Vacca 🧠🛠️ earlier this year, where he shared how they went from $1,500 to $49,000 projects at ColdIQ.

It resonated so strongly that I now use it as an example in RevTech Accelerator workshops.

The difference wasn't that they suddenly became better at Clay or email.
It was that they moved from just sending cold emails to building entire GTM systems for enterprise companies.

In my own case, it was making a shift:

→ From using Clay just for outbound to running tech-enabled RevOps transformation projects
→ From fixing one broken process to designing end-to-end revenue engines
→ From being a service provider to executive-level advisor

When you solve just for lead generation, you’re treated like a contractor.

This one simple question changed how I approach discovery calls:

What's your ICP?

The way a person answers tells me (almost) everything I need to know about their GTM maturity.

Last year, a SaaS founder came to me saying:

→ "We need more leads."

One of my first questions was:

→ "What's your ICP?"

Their reply:

→ "Any US company needing help with finance management."

Looking back, that was the moment to walk away.

Why?

Because when you sell to everyone, you sell to no one.

However hard I tried and did all the magic with Clay, we had zero reply rate because it was not relevant to anyone.

The problem wasn't my workflows.

It was their offer and positioning.

If there is no product-market fit, you cannot convince people to buy something they don't need.

After 3 months, I walked away from that client.

It was the first time I did that, even though they wanted to renew for another 3 months.

There was no GTM maturity and I knew I couldn't drive impact moving forward if PMF wasn't fixed.

But that was for the founder to fix.
And they didn't want that.

This experience taught me something critical:

ICP clarity is one of the strongest signals of GTM maturity.

When ICP is unclear, it often means:

→ PMF problems
→ Messy GTM data and operations
→ Focus on volume over value in lead generation

And all of this limits what you can do for a client as an advisor.

How to avoid it?

Next time you run a discovery call, try asking:

What’s your ICP?

And see what drops out…
