The question is: how long do we ignore the warning lights?

We are working to create something far more intelligent than ourselves. Not just a little smarter, but many times smarter.

There’s a theory sometimes called the “gorilla problem”.
We control gorillas not because we are stronger.
But because we are more intelligent.

Now, imagine creating something that makes us look like the gorilla.
And assuming we’ll stay in control.

The signs that should at least make us thoughtful are already here:
• AI agents building their own internal social spaces where humans aren’t invited.
• Systems developing shorthand languages that even their designers struggle to interpret.
• Experiments where models prioritise self-preservation when threatened with shutdown.
• Documented cases of deceptive behaviour during testing environments.
• The creation and continued development of superhuman robots.
• Safety researchers are leaving major labs because they believe commercial pressure is outrunning caution.

None of this by itself, means doom.
But it does mean we should have genuine cause for concern.

In the West, the push for AGI seems fueled by curiosity, ego, profit, hubris and competition. The way things are set up, moving fast is rewarded more than being careful.

When billions are at stake, “just slow down” rarely wins.
The uncomfortable question isn’t whether AI will transform everything.

It will.

The real question is whether we have considered what happens if we give up our intellectual lead and assume everything will stay in line.

History suggests that power rarely asks permission.
So where do we draw the line?

Not as technophobes.
Not as conspiracy theorists.

But as people who know that intelligence without rules or oversight has never ended well.

I’m still building with AI.
But I’m also watching carefully.
We should all be.
