One conversation. 12 years ago. Annual meeting of the German Society for Pediatric Cardiology . That’s all it took.🫀

I met a renowned paediatric cardiac surgeon at the Society meeting. From that meeting, I connected him with another world-leading surgeon and from that moment, a new European business was born.
Built from the ground up, we redefined the use of surgical graft materials.
Germany adopted first.
Then UK, Europe and the US.

At one point, nearly every CHD surgical site in Germany was using our products for their youngest patients. The company was acquired by a distributor in and this year, Medtronic took a stake in what it has since become.

You never quite know which conversation will change everything.
But when it lands, it has gravity. It pulls people, ideas, and momentum toward it.
That chapter ran its course.

But the seeds were planted long ago. 🌱

Last weekend in Cologne, I found myself back at the DGPK - 12 years later.
This time, helping organise and watching Nova Heart presented to an engaged room of clinic heads at the 55th Annual meeting in Cologne.

Nova Heart is designed to automate cardiac measurements and unlock collaborative research at scale.

A key highlight: launching a multicentric research collaboration with Germany’s National Registry for Congenital Heart Defects.

Telehealth Trends 2026

What keeps pharma execs up at 3 AM isn't competition. It's their own technology.

I've spent over 25 years in the healthcare industry. And there's a paradox few people say out loud:

The better AI gets at predicting disease, the more it threatens the companies that treat it.

Here's what's already happening 👇
→ Roche's AI glucose monitoring flags hypoglycemia risk 30 minutes before it hits. Not a roadmap. Deployed.

→ A ~$400 Apple Watch surfaces cardiac signals that might otherwise stay invisible until a clinical event.

→ Digital biomarkers  how you type, walk, speak  are showing early Alzheimer's risk patterns years before conventional diagnosis.
Impressive tech.

Now run the economics.
Treating diabetes across decades: hundreds of thousands per patient. Preventing it with software and coaching: a fraction of that.
Every prevented disease = lifetime revenue that never appears.


But here's what most observers miss:

The smartest companies aren't frozen. They're repositioning.

◾ Bayer is investing in software-based therapies through its G4A program 
◾ Lilly is building a direct-to-consumer platform that looks more like Netflix than a prescription pad 
◾ Apple, Amazon, and Google are moving from the outside in  with no legacy revenue to defend

This is no longer a technology problem.
It's a business-model problem.

And whoever resolves it will shape the next era of medicine.
