Getting back up, that’s the work.

Three years ago, I missed my biggest goal.

Months of effort.
Late nights.
All in.

Still missed.

I sat in my car, hands on the wheel, thinking,
“Was all that for nothing?”

It wasn’t.
It was the start of learning.

Failure didn’t finish me.
It taught me.

1. Rejection teaches
A “no” just means not yet.

2. Failure points.
It shows you what to fix.

3. Changing course isn’t weak.
It’s how you find what works.

4. The door that closes
is the one that pushes you toward the right one.

Your pace isn’t mine.
Your route isn’t mine.
When you look sideways, you slow down.

Forget big overhauls.

Send one honest message.

Try again tomorrow.

Everything that goes wrong tells you something.

There’s an underrated quality that changes the way people experience leadership.

👉 Humility

Not the kind that shrinks.
Not the kind that stays quiet.

The kind that steadies a room.

You see it when a leader doesn’t rush to prove they’re right.
When they pause long enough to listen.
When they admit, “I might be missing something.”

That moment does more than build trust.
It lowers defenses.
It creates space for better thinking.
It lets others bring their best forward.

Humility doesn’t weaken authority.
It strengthens it.

Because teams don’t follow perfection.
They follow leaders who are grounded enough to learn in real time.

I’ve watched confident leaders lose people by needing to be right.
And I’ve watched humble leaders earn commitment by staying curious.

The difference isn’t intelligence.
It’s self-awareness.

In practice, humility looks like this:
• Asking before asserting
• Listening without preparing a rebuttal
• Taking responsibility without self-flagellation
• Letting the work be bigger than your ego

In fast-moving, high-pressure environments, humility becomes a performance skill.

It keeps decisions clean.
It keeps relationships intact.
It keeps learning alive.

The leaders who last aren’t the loudest.
They’re the ones who know when to step back so the truth can step forward.

The Porta-Potty Standoff: Showed up to a new-hire orientation to find a row of porta potties in the training room. We had people to onboard and enough stuff to deal with and was able to get the porta-potties banished. 

One-Woman Software SWAT: Got “Hey, we’re changing core software, train the entire org in a week” with zero team, zero prep. I caffeinated, white-boarded, and lived to meme the tale.

eLearning ER: Performed emergency-saving surgery on eLearning so ugly they triggered OSHA concerns.

If you lead people, this is your reminder to do a check-in with them. 
It's goal setting season and you shouldn't assume people know they are doing a good job.
I took the time today to do a performance retro highlighting key achievements thus far for the year, stakeholder feedback on performance, and highlighting how they worked across the organization. It was a conversation that allowed them to also reflect on what has went well and other things to consider for the year.
Feedback shouldn't just be a one and done, normalize it being a frequent,  2-way conversation.

People do not judge your thinking.
They judge the screenshot of your outcome.

Behind every “why would they do that?” is a constraint you did not see.
Learning and development has been talking for years about influence and earning a seat at the table. True influence is fact gathering around the constraints.

Next time leadership drops a decision that makes you blink twice, do not debate vibes, run what I call a Constraint Interrogation:

1) Name the box
“What constraints are shaping this? Budget, risk, compliance, time, headcount, dependencies?"

2) Name the trade
“What are we optimizing for right now? Speed, safety, cost, reputation, customer harm reduction?”

3) Name the owner
“Who owns this tradeoff and how will we measure if it was worth it?”

4) Name the unlock
“What would need to change to unlock a better option? More headcount, clearer data, reduced scope, a different sequence?”
