I learned early the difference between being present… and being heard.

Self-advocacy wasn’t something anyone taught me.

At 5’4”, 120 lbs, with a voice that fills a room, I quickly understood that simply showing up would never be enough.

Older siblings challenged me constantly. School competitions forced me to defend my ideas. Church programs pushed me on stage to sing or read scriptures.

And then there were the unspoken expectations...

Was it uncomfortable? Yes. 
Did I ever say no? No.

These experiences built muscles long before I ever knew they would matter in corporate.
Most women never realize the value of this kind of training.

Instead, we’re raised on a different script:
Don’t be too loud. 
Don’t be too much. 
Don’t ask for too much. 
Let your work speak for you. People will notice.

Except in corporate… they don’t.

Not in executive rooms. Not in calibration meetings. Not when promotions are being decided in conversations, you’re not part of.

Many women aren’t just uncomfortable with self-promotion. We build identities around avoiding it.

We say:
“I’m an introvert.” 
“I prefer to stay behind the scenes.” 
“I don’t want people to think I’m bragging.” 
“I’m not political.”

But underneath those explanations sits one belief:
Visibility feels unsafe.

So we shrink. We soften our voice. We stay quiet in rooms where our future is being decided.

We wait to be noticed. We hope someone will tap us on the shoulder when the time is right.

Meanwhile, executives see something completely different.
They don’t know what you’re working on. They don’t know what you want next. They don’t know where to place you.

You think you’re being humble. They think you’re unsure.
You think you’re avoiding conflict. They think you’re avoiding leadership.
You think you’re protecting your reputation. They think you lack ambition.

And the hardest truth?
You think you’re playing it safe. Executives think you’re playing small.

For years I walked into rooms underestimated, shorter and younger than many of the people already positioned for leadership.

Then I realized something that changed everything:
Decision-makers can’t promote what they can’t see. And they can’t champion a voice they’ve never heard.

The executive role opened.

I had the qualifications.
I was already doing parts of the job.

So, I assumed I would be considered.

I never asked.
Instead, I did what many high performers are trained to do.

I eagerly filled the gap.
Stepped in where needed.
Took on responsibilities that technically belonged to the role.

No one asked me to.
I assumed my actions would speak for themselves.
But they didn’t.

One day a new leader was introduced.
They had hired someone externally.
And I helped onboard them.

That moment taught me something many capable leaders learn too late:
Hard work earns credibility.
But conversations determine opportunity.

When leadership roles open, executives rarely start by asking:
“Who worked the hardest?”

They ask a different question:
“Who have we already seen thinking at the level this role requires?”

And leaders experience that thinking through conversation.
Not performance reviews. Not reports.  Not results alone.
Through conversation.

Many high performers avoid those conversations.
Not because they lack ambition, but because asking creates risk.
The answer might challenge how they see themselves.

It might reveal a capability gap.
Or it might require asking directly for something they’ve spent years hoping would be offered.

So instead, they keep delivering.
But the evaluation criteria change as you approach the C-suite.
Earlier in your career, leaders are rewarded for:
Execution.
Expertise
Solving problems

At the executive level, leaders are evaluated on something different:
Judgment
Influence
Business perspective

And those capabilities can’t be experienced through performance alone.
They are experienced in conversation.

I saw this recently with a client reporting to a new CEO.
Instead of waiting to be evaluated, she asked one question:
“What updates can I provide that would reassure you this function is contributing to business results?”

That question shifted how the CEO saw her role.
Because CEOs aren’t focused on the same things middle leaders are.
They’re thinking about:
Cost pressure
Execution risk
Where the business could fail

There’s another truth many leaders overlook.
Senior leaders often hesitate to give direct feedback.
Not because they don’t have it.
But because they don’t want to discourage someone they respect.

So, if you never create space for the conversation, the feedback never comes.
And without feedback, many high performing leaders keep climbing with the wrong playbook.

Or worse, they keep waiting to be chosen.
But executive readiness doesn’t come from being chosen.
It comes from being understood.

Most promotions aren’t decided when the role opens.
They’re decided months earlier, in conversations where leaders experience how you think.

What opportunity might you be assuming… instead of asking about?
