Legalweek  Day Zero and somehow we already managed to pack in about three days’ worth of conversations, chaos, and catching up.

Started the night exactly how the best LegalWeek nights start. With some of my favorite people and some of my favorite faces in legal tech. The kind of room where every corner conversation turns into a debate about AI, the future of law, or a story from the early eDiscovery wild west.

And yes. In true LegalWeek fashion… we eventually found ourselves at Faces and Names.

Which honestly feels like the unofficial opening ceremony of the entire week.

If Day Zero is any indication, this week is going to be one hell of a ride.

“Who knows what she REALLY wants” and a lady in red. One company thought those words and a viral prebaked marketing landing page with a beautiful woman in red would drive views. Drive clicks. 

It did. But not in a good way. 

I won’t say who because it does not matter. And they don’t deserve the clicks. 

Here is my take- I know exactly what I want, tech that works, partners that respect me and not for women to be a prop in someones poorly executed marketing campaign. 
 
Here is what people I deeply respect have said: 

- “I would never trust them with my data. It’s insane that basically shows what they would do with it.”

- “Ugh so grossed out”

- “This is horrific r they that deaf!”

-“This life size woman was on their life size  booth poster and we had to look at it all day long. It was right across from our booth. It was so disturbing!! They still subscribe to the sex sells philosophy in this day and age?  What message is that sending??”

To add insult to insult a follow up email just landed in every attendees inbox featuring the same vacant eyes AI woman. 

To the industry - have fun and be cheeky, but not gross. 

To the marketing team and leadership do better! Clicks do not equal business. From someone who knows clicks. 

And to William White your clapback landing page was not doing what you thought it would.

About last night.
What. A. Legalweek! 

I am still a little speechless. Which, if you know me, is rare.

My heart is beyond full. My feet are completely demolished. And I cannot think of a better way to close out LegalWeek.

Huge thank you to the brilliant team at Glenmont Group for hosting an absolutely unforgettable evening. We are talking several hundred year old whiskey and more than $30,000 worth of cocktails that you simply cannot get anywhere else. One of those nights where you look around the room and realize you are surrounded by some of the smartest and most interesting people in legal tech.

And then to top it all off, we wrapped the night with the very first event I have thrown as part of Masters AI x TechnoCat.

A special shout out to Michael Potters and Mike Dalewitz for helping bring the vision to life and for building something truly special for this community.

About last night! A whirlwind of chaotic awesome in the best possible way only BEGINS to scratch the surface of the awesome Legalweek brought to day one in the stunning new venue!

From and awesome keynote by eli manning to a standing room only crowd of thousands to rocking the opening reception right from the Reveal booth 427 we started hot and only got hotter!

A great dinner with my HaystackID friends and a much needed family reunion at the NEW FACES AND NAMES (Tailor Public house) capped the evening in the best possible way!

Now to start it all over again for day 2!

There are not many things that will get me up early, in sparkles, and smiling on a LegalWeek morning.

AI for good is one of them. And Jacqueline Schafer of Clearbrief.ai is another!  

This morning kicked off with the incredible Jackie Schafer and the team at Clearbrief for their AI-Powered Pro Bono Day at the Practising Law Institute (PLI)  in NYC.

And honestly? I cannot imagine a better way to start the week.

A room full of lawyers actually using AI to help people who need it most. We dove straight into hands-on training across real pro bono work:

- Veterans case assessment
- Asylum matters
- Impact litigation and class actions

Then a fireside chat over lunch with Alicia C.  about how AI is showing up inside legal departments.

The best part is what happens this afternoon.

Jackie and I are closing out the day with guided breakout sessions and group discussions, rolling up our sleeves with the room to apply these tools to real legal problems.

This is the version of legal AI I care most about.

Not hype. Not fear. Not robots replacing lawyers.
Lawyers using powerful tools to expand access to justice.

If this is how LegalWeek begins, it is going to be one hell of a week. ✨

From around 2000 - 2007 I was an on-air radio DJ. My name was Damon Kelly.

I spent most of my time on U92, but also among half a dozen other stations.

Those years were some of the funnest of my life.

Had the opportunity to meet countless musicians and celebrities, hang out back stage, host huge concerts and club parties.

That chapter also played a huge role in a few forever moments of my life.

I remember the very first songs I played on-air was a club remix of Aaliyah's Rock the Boat.

Fate would have it, radio would bring another Aleah into my life... my wife.

I didn't meet my wife through radio, but I started dating her through it.

I met her visiting my family. I'd drive to hang out with my younger siblings, and she lived two doors down.

She worked evenings at a hospital, and I often covered evening shifts at the station.

We'd talk late into the night on the radio studio's hotline.

If you're not familiar with how radio works, you're often just sitting there between breaks (talking). So we'd be talking, put her on hold to talk to the world, then come back to continue with Hottie.

We'd talk for hours, and sometimes she'd come up and hang out in-person in the studio to talk.

Other times we'd talk so late she'd fall asleep. Then when I'd drive up to see her after, she was still passed out listening to me on the radio.

My friends Jake (right) and John (left) started in radio around the same time frame, and still do concerts and cool events.

Jake also ended up being the DJ for me and Aleah's wedding.

Another was the DJ for when I rented out a mansion and threw a big party for my 40th birthday party.

Another friend is now my realtor.

And many other old radio friends are some of my biggest cheerleaders in everything else I do in life.

Grateful for those past adventures, and current friendships.

I don't talk to all of them regularly, but they are all the ones that no matter how much time passes in between hanging out, we immediately pick up where we left off.

Just closed a $126,000 website redesign. And it supports the post I made a while back.

The other day I made a post that started, "Friends, your greed for revenue is sacrificing the thing you think you're securing." And it's the perfect example of how I got this $126,000 deal.

This is an SEO client that has been with us for two or three years and they come to us all the time and ask if we can do these other things. And we tell them no all the time, because the problem is that they have these other people that just want to take their money.

They got other agencies that just pitch them the most random crap. It's like some of the stuff that they send them is like, "you guys need a mobile app."

Well, you don't, you just need a mobile friendly website, which you already have.

They have invested a hundred grand in a mobile app and nobody's using it.

And then they say, "Somebody said we need to change this thing."

No, you don't.

We have, time and time again, told them no to $5,000, $10,000, $20,000 things. Enough that we established trust because they're realize "They're not just 'yes men.'"

Really professional people don't want yes men. They want people to speak honestly to them.

Then in us being honest to them, as the other people took their money and those projects failed or failed to provide a return on their investment, then we were proven right.

We were proven right why we said no, and it doubles our integrity.

Now, when they came to us and asked if we'd be interested in doing this website redesign, we put in a bid.

Then they scheduled an appointment and said, "Hey, we want to talk about the website." Not only did they say yes, they said yes without negotiating.

They didn't ask if there was any flexibility in anything. We asked if they were shopping it, and no. It's ours. The only thing they asked is what is the payment structure like.

They also gave us another SEO project because they trust that we are here to protect and amplify their dollar.

If you've followed me long enough, you know that I talk a lot about delayed gratification and just doing the right thing.

Back to the post I made the other day about chasing revenue. When some people charge more "because they can," they're losing more than they think they're securing.

Would you rather have one $10,000 deal "because you could," or charge somebody $3,000 and then they come back and go, "That was a great return on my investment. You were professional and I appreciate your transparency. Let's now start a $3,000 per month reoccurring retainer?"

You got the first $3k deal, and now you make up the $10k in just over 3 months with the new $3k/month retainer. Everything after that is just icing on the cake.

I could have said yes to countless of their $5k - $20k offers. But with confidence, I told them that was not what they needed. And now we got $126,000 in the bank.
