🌍 Building Bridges Between Indian Nurses and German Hospitals 🇮🇳🤝🇩🇪

Last week, I visited one of our partner hospitals in Germany a client in the healthcare sector for whom we recently helped hire six experienced nurses from India.

Each of these nurses brings:
 ✅ Over 2 years of ICU experience in India
 ✅ B2-level German proficiency
 ✅ And most importantly, the motivation to build their future in Germany 💙

This visit was part of the regular check-ins we do with our partner hospitals. We discussed current progress, addressed challenges, and explored solutions together.

But what made this visit truly special was the human connection, we arranged video calls between the nurses in India and their future team in Germany, including the hiring manager and integration manager. We even gave the candidates a virtual tour of their future workplace, so they could visualize where they’ll soon be working.

Why do we do this? Because from the moment a hospital decides to hire a nurse from India to the moment that nurse arrives in Germany, the process takes 5–6 months. Staying connected during this time is key. It builds trust, motivation, and readiness on both sides.

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do at Destination Germany GmbH. Helping transform lives while ensuring German hospitals have the skilled healthcare professionals they need.

Founder & Geschäftsführer at Destination Germany | Bridging Skill Gaps in Healthcare & Beyond

Last week I was invited to the Einbürgerungsfeier of Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.

1355 people from 77 countries have been naturalised here so far – in a district with around 232,200 residents, that’s roughly 0.6% of the population now officially “new Germans”. As of 2022, about 14% of the people in this region have an immigration background.

That’s the local view. The national picture is even bigger:
Across Germany, about 25–26% of the population now has a migration background – roughly every fourth person. (Xinhua News)

And immigrants are not just “here” – they are keeping the country running:
>25% of all employees in Germany have a migration background, and they are a key driver of the economy and innovation. (Deutschland)

In 2023/2024, the entire growth in employment came from foreign workers; without immigration, the number of workers would already be shrinking. (Statistik der Bundesagentur für Arbeit)

If we zoom into specific sectors:
Nursing & healthcare:
- About 16% of all qualified nurses are foreign nationals – and since 2022, all employment growth in nursing has come from them. (Bundesagentur für Arbeit)
- In 2023 alone, more than 27,000 foreign-trained nurses started working in Germany. (European Commission)

Handwerk & shortage occupations:
- In construction, around two-thirds (67%) of workers now have an immigration background; similarly high shares exist among tile setters, drivers, cleaners, food production and many other shortage jobs. (Federal Statistical Office of Germany)

Recent fiscal studies show that working-age migrants in employment are net contributors to the public budget over their life cycle – they pay more in taxes and social security than they receive in transfers, very similar to or better than native Germans in the same age group. (Econstor)

Standing in that room at the Einbürgerungsfeier, looking around at people from dozens of countries who now call Germany home, it was very clear:

🇩🇪 Germany doesn’t just “have” immigrants – Germany runs with immigrants.

For German companies, that’s a mindset shift that matters:
If you’re still hesitant about international hiring, you’re hesitating about a quarter of the talent pool – and in some sectors (Pflege, Handwerk, IT), often the majority of the people keeping the system running.

If you’re an international talent dreaming of Germany: yes, the process is tough. But the data is clear, you are needed, and your contribution is measurable.

I’m grateful to now officially be part of this story and with Destination Germany we’ll keep doing our small part to connect motivated people from around the world with the companies and sectors that urgently need them.

🇩🇪 Migrants keep industries running — and Germany moving forward. 🌍

At an event last week organized by Wirtschaftsrat der CDU e.V., Theresia Denzer-Urschel, Chairwoman of the Management Board at Agentur für Arbeit Offenburg, shared a powerful message: “We can’t do without migrants — they are the backbone of many industries in Germany.”

According to data from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit:
👷‍♀️ 45.7% of all cleaning occupations are done by people with a migration background.
🍞 41.8% of food production and processing jobs.
🏨 34.7% of tourism, hotel, and catering roles.

Overall, 16.2% of Germany’s workforce today has a migration background.

This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about real people who are contributing every single day to keep the German economy, healthcare, and service industries running.

We believe that migration, when managed with empathy and structure, isn’t a challenge but it’s an opportunity. 💙
