Social Media Marketing Manager

You guys will say it’s not that deep and I have a huge problem, but I don’t care! These are my Linkedin pet peeves, not yours 

1. Always liking my comments, and never replying. Listen, I will start deleting my comments if you do that frequently and I will sue you. 

2. Repeating my words as your comment. For example, I was say, “social listening is a must in 2026” and your comment is, “yes Chidra, social listening is a must. Thanks for this post” I will block you. 

3. Commenting “great post” “insightful” every time. I will report your account. 

4. Always having something negative to say and always shitting on people’s effort. I hope your phone burns. 

5. Sending ‘Hi’ messages and not following it up with anything else. 🙄

6. Insulting someone’s brand because you are pitching yourself. E.g (You’re doing a great job but your marketing is horrible and needs fixing” excuse you? 

7. Pitching me services that you can clearly see that I don’t need. It’s not even in my line of work at all. 

8. ChatGPT comments every single time. Please delete your account. 

9. Turning my LinkedIn DM into Tinder. Listen, I will direct you to the police. 

10. Turning the tiniest thing into a post. No, I don’t care to know what spilling your coffee taught you about leadership.

I cannot guarantee you a specific number of likes or followers in a month as a social media manager. And anyone who does hate you and want to sell your soul — and probably your firstborn — to Hades.

Here are 5 more things I can’t guarantee you as a marketing professional:

- A specific revenue or sales figure. Too many variables are outside my control: audience behaviour, market shifts, the economy… I do marketing, not miracles.

- Virality. I can increase the odds with strategy and strong creative, but I can’t bully the internet into caring.

- Algorithm favoritism. No one can guarantee reach, impressions, or “the algorithm liking you.” If they say they can, ask them what the algorithm had for breakfast.

- Timing of success. Some things click fast. Others need testing, iteration, and patience. Growth is not instant…like noodles (haha get it? God I’m so funny)

- Lifetime results. Markets evolve. Audiences change. What works today might not work in the next 2 years. 

But, what I do guarantee is…

- Discipline, competence, and momentum
- Systems that increase the probability of results
- Consistent, strategic content output
- Campaigns optimised toward agreed KPIs (Website traffic, CPC,  CTR, engagement, opens)
- Improvement overtime 

I take full ownership of everything within my control. And that’s what good marketing actually looks like, minus the fairy tales.

Me joining everyone to complain about resuming work after the holidays,  knowing fully well that I didn’t go on break. I had no holiday. In fact, I worked a bit on Christmas Day. 💀

POV: Me looking at all the things I said I will circle back to in 2026

Sometimes when I get rejected for a job, I used to think the recruiter giggled a little before sending the rejection mail.

So I was thinking, since 2016 is trending and we are literally in 2016, wouldn’t it be fun and cool if Instagram  does something crazy like changing the logo to the old logo for a while, and bringing back old features like “boomerang”? 🤔🤭

Am I the only one thinking this?!!

🚨 This might be a little controversial, but “Done-for-you social media management” is misleading.

When social media managers market their services as done-for-you services, there’s often a miscommunication because it makes the client think all they have to do is relax and approve content.

But it’s not like that.

I wish more people understood this—managing socials is a collaborative effort between the client and the manager, and it goes beyond the client recording videos and sending them over for editing.

The reality is that good social media requires collaboration. Even with a skilled manager handling execution, the business owner/team needs to:
• Share what’s actually happening in the business (behind-the-scenes, customer stories, daily realities)
• Provide timely feedback and direction
• Be responsive when the manager has questions
• Participate in some of the content (especially video/authentic moments)

And here’s the thing—social media can only amplify what’s already happening in your business. If you’re not actively building partnerships, networking, creating compelling offers, or pursuing other growth channels, even the best content strategy will struggle to deliver results.

When social media managers say “done-for-you,” they actually mean “done-with-you.” Like every other kind of marketing, social media management needs you to actively participate. It’s not a hands-off thing.

(And honestly, I think this misconception is why people use "social media manager" and "virtual assistant" interchangeably—but that's another post for another day 🫠)
