Funny how your brain has unlimited energy
for worst-case scenarios.

It can write entire disaster scripts at 3 a.m.

The advice I wish I could’ve given myself 8 years ago:

Create a culture people never want to leave.

Yes, you can’t keep everyone with a 0% turnover rate. 
Let’s face it.

But what you can do is build an environment people don’t want to walk away from.

Build a culture that makes employees:

↳ Recommend it to their friends as the dream job, 
↳ Stay, even if the paycheck isn't perfect yet, 
↳ Come back when the conditions are right.

Think about it:

👉 A competitive paycheck might keep someone for a while, 
But a toxic culture will drive them away for good.

👉 You can offer all the perks, but if the culture is unhealthy, 
Nothing will make your best people stick around.

People stay where they feel valued.

It’s not just about the money—it’s about creating a workplace 
that makes people excited to show up every day.

“Hire the people that…”

Interesting how the list skips:
– constant availability
– performative hustle
– being the loudest voice
– working 24/7 for optics

Great teams grow from maturity, not heroics.
From people who communicate clearly, take ownership, and move in sync.

Ego slows teams down.
Trust speeds them up.
Psychological safety keeps the work moving.

Hire for reliability and collaboration first.
Everything else gets easier after that.

“It wasn’t a waste of time if you learned something.”

That’s easy to agree with in theory.
Harder when the lesson came with lost money, bruised confidence, or a year you won’t get back.

Still - experience has a way of paying later.

It sharpens your instincts.
It changes what you tolerate.
It shortens the gap between seeing a red flag and acting on it.

Not every chapter produces visible wins.

Here’s a hard truth most people avoid:

I learned this the slow way.

Early on, I tried to get everything right.
Perfect plan.
Perfect timing.
Perfect execution.

And progress?
Basically stalled.

Things only changed when I gave myself permission to be wrong.

I used to think GTM complexity was just part of the job.

Headhunting the top 1% Philippine eCommerce talent 🥇 Strategic & Key hires ♟️ Zero ongoing fees 🤝 150+ hires, specialising in eCommerce & Saas 📦 3x Founder, building a life-first biz with my wife 👩🏼‍🤝‍👨🏻

I wasted $74K on recruiters who promised "top talent"

And got nothing but empty promises.

Spent 9 years building an eCommerce brand.

Scaled fast.
And built a team (in PH)

But finding elite Philippine eCommerce talent?
Incredibly hard.

Recruiters kept pitching “top 1% candidates" and sending the same recycled resumes from job boards.

→ No DTC experience.
→ No ownership mindset.
→ No strategic thinking.

After one particularly frustrating hire, I realised the recruiter problem was two-fold:

1. They didn’t understand eCommerce.

In 2023, a friend called me on Zoom.

He was in a tight spot.

Overworked.
Constantly sick.
Bottlenecking his business.

And all because he couldn't find reliable eComm talent.
(It's a common problem)

He’d been hiring freelancers from job platforms, but he was getting no where.

Low-quality work.
High turnover.
No trust.

We helped him out, as a friend.
And filled his 5 roles in 5 weeks.

Changed his business. Gave him his life back.

Needless to say, he was ecstatic.

He referred 2 friends. They referred more.
Referrals kept scaling.

Suddenly... we were an agency.
Booked for weeks in advance.
By 7-8 figure eComm brands.

And in 2024, I sold my eComm brand to a large US company, to focus on building Wilbound.com with my wife (Melani Merrick).

And here's why it works:

→ clear expectations, not vague briefs
→ real relationships, not just Slack DMs
→ actual growth paths, not dead-end tasks

The best talent in the Philippines have options.

They're not looking for another gig.
They're looking for a real opportunity.

So treat them like your A-team.

(Because they are).

Or they'll find someone who will.

In 2022, I burned $76k launching a product.

Here's how many units I sold on day 1:

Zero.

$32k on stock
$17k on influencers
$15k on video/stills
$7k on paid ads
$5k on emails

For 'the softest silk pillowcase in the world'.

I thought:

"I'll just market the sh-t out of it."
"It'll sell like f—king hot cakes."

So much arrogance...

Day one → Zero.
First month → 1 unit.

And it didn't get better from there.

My ego was crushed.

I'd spent $76k and 18 mo building something just to discover:

→ The market's already saturated
→ No one wants an expensive pillowcase...

All because I never actually validated demand.

It was a costly mistake.

So when Melani and I started Wilbound, we did the opposite.

No big launch
No paid ads
No PR
(we didn't even have a brand name)

I just:

1. Told a few of my contacts what we're doing.
2. Took on a couple as clients. Delivered.
3. Learned and optimised.

Without spending a cent, I got to learn:

→ Who our ideal client is
→ What they care about
→ How to position ourselves
→ What the market will pay for

My $76k learning?

Assumptions are expensive.
But questions are cheap.

So build less. Ask more. And learn faster.

What's the most expensive lesson you've learned?

In 2016, I was the worst type of founder.

I tried way too hard, and lost everything.

> started my first company in 2012
> worked 96hrs a week
> reinvested all profits into growth (yolo?)
> hired anyone + everyone to feel like a "boss"
> burned out and got sick every other week
> ran into financial trouble in 2016
> forced to liquidate in 2017. Heartbreaking.
> lost my $3.5M ARR dev agency
> started over. Bootstrapped an eComm brand
> got lucky (thank f—k!!!)
> learned to build systems + hired a great team
> scaled to $165k MRR in 10 months from zero
> grew to $3.1m and exited in 2024

Not sure if this'll make you want to start a business or run for the trees, but that's the raw truth of what happened.

How messy has your journey been? (be honest)

Our eComm client almost gave up on his baby brand.

This year he'll hit $6.7M ARR.

Jordan was drowning.

Managing supply chain, inventory, paid ads, web design; everything.

"I'm thinking about giving up, man."

He came pretty close.

So we helped him out.

We made 6 key hires across his biggest choke points: ads, creative, customer service, email, social + design.

All in the Philippines.

The results?

→ 305% sales growth
→ On track for $6.7M ARR
→ A tiny 6-person team running it all

But more importantly, he got his time back.

2 weeks in Bali.

I’ve built two 7-figure businesses.

And it’s not hard, if you get one thing right:

A business is just 4 parts:

→ MARKETING your products/services
→ SELLING to customers at a profit
→ DELIVERING on what you sold
→ ACCOUNT for money in/out

Simple, right?

The problem is, in the beginning, you do it all yourself.

It's a sh-t load of work.
And you're not good at most of it.

I was stuck in DELIVERY for years.

Managing inventory and miscalculating orders constantly.

It held the entire business back.

Then I hired a supply chain manager.

Overnight, the issue was gone. And I had time to focus on what actually moved the needle.

The key is to replace yourself with exceptional people, fast.

Start by asking:

"If my business 2x'd tomorrow, what would break first?"
"Where is most of my time going?"

I cut my workday to just 4 hrs.

I know, this isn't for everyone.
Some people will scoff at it.
