As a copywriter and content strategist for CREO Agency—a design and development firm—I specialized in producing both commercial and nonprofit content, editing existing projects, and creating communication strategies for a variety of digital products.

As a project manager, I oversaw teams primarily of 2-3 people in the production of mobile applications, websites, print materials, and marketing strategies. Clients included both startups—most notably GreenGoose and Sumazi—as well as established organizations—e.g., JELD-WEN, Lowe's & Atlatl.

In Warner Pacific’s NWCCU accredited Adult Degree Program, I taught multiple courses in the areas of written composition, oral communication, literature, ethics/philosophy, Biblical Studies, and history.  Duties include:

➾ Writing and implementing curriculum to meet institutional standards;

➾ Grading and evaluating student work, both written and oral;

➾ Coaching and counseling students regarding educational, career, and life goals.

Student feedback as collected through Warner’s End of Course Evaluations (EOCEs) reveals a strong commitment both to my students as well as to the educational process itself.  In addition to receiving an average instructor rating of 4.84 out of 5, written comments reflect a deep passion for engagement and personal attention (documentation is available on request):

As the lead pastor for New Life’s third campus, I oversaw the merger of two existing, outside churches into one, new organization.  This process involved:

An intensive schedule of regular, public teaching;

Production of externally focused promotional materials including online videos, Facebook integration, blogging, and demographic-specific mailers;

Short-term and crisis management counseling;

Managing, coordinating, and equipping paid staff members as well as various ministry teams; 

Investing extensively in the recruiting, training, and deployment of new leaders at multiple levels; 

Generating and leading a comprehensive new membership process, which both established a fully functioning constitution and integrated nearly two hundred members.

The power of content resides not in its direct ability to sell, although it can. Truly great content — the kind that drives leads into and through your funnel — galvanizes an audience through a consistent story … well told. One with people, not products, at its core.

Every piece of content has to answer two questions:

(1) What hell does it save its audience from?

(2) What heaven does it deliver unto?

That might sound a bit theological, but it’s the most visceral way to make your content about your audience instead of you. Why? Because …

Self-centeredness is a plague — branded content that screams branded. 

At the opposite extreme is content for the sake of content. Feeding the beast for no greater purpose than, “We’re supposed to make content, right?”

Business results come from content that above all rescues its audience from their fears, struggles, and pains. Moreover, it must do so prior to and independent of a purchase.

Together, let’s save your business, your audience, and the world … from bad content.

At the end of the recording, the founder said …

“I want to build a big company eventually.”

Then, he emailed me to say thank you and ask if he should send back the equipment we provided.

I’m absolutely floored.

And he’s not the only one.

The most powerful lesson I’ve taken away from helping lead the Operators Podcast is that the bigger the business … the smaller the ego.

When I said that to Mike Beckham, he responded:

“I have this theory.

“People tend to view things the way that they were when you first started them, whatever that is.

“And so I think founders perpetually, if anything, view themselves as the underdog when other people don’t view them that way.”

“They can be egocentric.

“But they don’t really have egos because they remember what it was like.”

It hit home.

When I started in this online marketing game 12+ years ago, my life had imploded. I was about to be divorced, I was living in a room I’d rented from a guy I found on Craigslist … and I’d just got sober.

Compared to that reality, today is nothing but grace.

Sure, I can get a big head sometimes (egocentric), but there is a foundation of gratitude — that what I have is not mine, that it was given to me by putting one foot in front of the next.

It was a powerful reminder.

And I can’t wait for all of you to hear the episode.
