Y'all. I woke up to a tag in comments on a post written by a "headhunter". This is what it said - word for word, direct quote, entire post:

Friends, I promise you - I ain't getting out of bed and doing this stuff for free. Obviously there are MANY factors that go into considering an opportunity and sure, there should be other things you need to know before you decide to accept a role - for example:

✔️ Can I commute to this location when required?
✔️ Am I qualified to perform / interested in doing this exact work?
✔️ Does the company provide the growth potential and/or job security that is important to me?
✔️ Do I like/respect/see myself working with or for the individuals I met?

ABSOLUTELY NONE OF THAT MATTERS if we're not aligned on compensation.

SO - the ACTUAL "rule number 1" in recruiting? 

Treat responses asking for more information like the buying signal they are, you absolute barnacle.

I wasn't gonna but I'm gonna now because if I have to think about it SO DO YOU.

Job seekers, stop gaslighting yourselves.

There I said it. 

There are PLENTY of actual terrible job search things to be mad at. STOP getting so worked up about completely normal, readily explainable things that do not deserve your emotional energy.

Case in point - earlier today a screenshot/link and post was shared / reshared where an application included a couple of weird questions that would be red flags (if not illegal) in the US.

THE ROLE IS NOT POSTED IN THE US. 

I am begging y'all pause for like 30 seconds and ask a few questions BEFORE grabbing your pitchforks, ok? If you see a post or application process that seems off - check these boxes:

☑️ Is this posted on a reputable site/by a reputable company?
☑️ Is the location of the role clear?
☑️ Am I qualified for the role INCLUDING ability/authorization to work in said location?
☑️ Am I familiar enough with local/state/federal guidelines to make assumptions about the validity of an ask?
☑️ Am I interested enough in this particular opportunity to chase this info and find out?

I see stuff like this ALL THE TIME and against my better judgement I try to explain. It rarely works. 

So consider this my last gasp, final plea, passionate ask to stop raising your blood pressure over something so mind-bogglingly NOT worth getting excited about. I care deeply about job seekers but some of y'all are making me want to go live off grid and raise goats. 

Please. This 24/7 outrage news cycle has broken our brains. Let's not feed those monsters, k? We need to save our energy (and yes, outrage) for things that MATTER.

Take your dang PTO. 

(I am!) 

I really thought I'd be able to drag myself into the office today 🤣 I can walk (mostly) but shoes? Not happening. I prefer being barefoot on a good day - you think I'm going to trap my feet TODAY when I've got a blister the size of a half dollar (notice it gets bigger every time I tell the story) on the inside of my heel?

ANYWAY. 

As a manager, I do not care why, when, or how you take your PTO. Give me a heads up sure - especially if you're going to be out for a while and need coverage. Mostly because I don't want to bug you when you're OOO (seriously - turn off notifications!!) 

Need a mental health reset day? Take it. 
Sick kiddo? Take it. 
Just hauled yourself 13.1 miles in drizzle two days ago and only wish you couldn't feel your legs? Take it.

PTO is there for a reason, whether it's specific or unlimited or whatever. 

TAKE IT. I'll dial in for a few important calls today but other than that? Sitting on a heating pad with my feet up, reminding my husband that I JUST RAN 13.1 MILES SIR. But only like every hour or so. I'm not THAT annoying.

Unpopular opinion but AI won't kill recruiting.

A "customer service" approach to recruiting sure will though. 

Let me explain. 

I have shared this quote a million times and I stand by it (shout out to Michelle who taught me this after I got my a$$ handed to me by a VERY ANGRY director). 

"𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙊𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙇𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨 𝙇𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙙 𝘾𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚"

The absolute best of the best recruiters know their job is not to "support" hiring. It's not to serve up whatever the HM asks for on a silver platter. It's most definitely not to act as a subservient recruiting admin who takes direction from hiring teams with no input or critical thought in return. 

It's to be a true, strategic ADVISOR. 

That often means saying NO. 

We should always try to find creative solutions and ways to say YES. Hiring managers can and should know what they need to accomplish. They can and should know what it takes talent wise to hit those goals. Their inputs MATTER - after all, it's their budget/headcount we're spending. 

HOW we get there should squarely land in the recruiter's court. Our job is to help hiring teams understand what's possible, plausible, and achievable. We should be able to tie back those asks to overall business priorities and ensure we're focusing on matching up the RIGHT talent and opportunities - not just caving to the loudest voices. 

You can't chatgpt your way out of misalignment. Different tools, more automation, less THINKING will never be better than a truly consultative approach to solving business problems through talent. 

Ask why. Seek to understand. Tie it back to overarching goals and expectations. Educate on what's possible and WHY. When you CAN'T deliver X, be prepared to explain how you can do Y instead. For the love of God under promise and over deliver. 

It's less about saying NO, and more about finding the right ways to say YES. 

Like a true human advisor. Like a REAL RECRUITER. Tools can't do that. People can. If you're just going to take whatever HM prompts come your way, might as well give up and let Claude do it. That's easy stuff. Won't work in the end, but it's easy. 

You know what you need to do. Now go do it. Hit me up if you need help.

In OpenAI’s live-streamed town hall on January 26, Sam Altman announced that the company would dramatically slow down hiring going forward.

“… we think we'll be able to do so much more with fewer people,” he said. 

That was 54 days ago.

Today, the news is that OpenAI will nearly double headcount to 8,000 by the end of the year.

Imagine that. 

Oh, and guess who OpenAI employs *A TON* of?

Recruiters. Human ones.

Mike claims AI will take “most” sourcers jobs in 13 months.

I’ve been in recruiting nearly 3 decades. I’ve actually BEEN a Sourcer. Worked with thousands over the years. I have yet to meet one that ONLY does what Mike claim “most” are doing. 

$100 to the charity of your choice if you can intro me to 10 sourcers who will back him up. I’m not saying just 10 randos who agree with him. 10 sourcers who ONLY do the research, admin tasks that AI can 100% take on. 10 sourcers who’s work can be reduced to something a chatbot can do end to end, without human oversight. 

No human interaction. Just pure transaction that can be done by a tool. The 5 things Mike says “most” of you do. It’s in his post, helpfully screenshotted and shared below. 

Only 10…. this should be easy money.

Y'all I might be more confused about this now than before I started digging into it.

Should you hire a REVERSE RECRUITER? Before you answer that, do you know what a Reverse Recruiter even IS? What service they provide? What guarantees (if any) they offer?

Job search is messy, complicated, and confusing. It makes sense to want HELP. That said, scams are rampant and job seekers MUST be cautious. 

I did my best to approach this video without letting my personal opinions or biases impact the research I did. While I share my personal thoughts on whether or not I would hire one, I tried to not pass judgment or make a recommendation either way.

AI fraud detection on resumes / of candidates is a hot topic. 

I get it - AI has unfortunately made it SO EASY both sides to spam the other. From a recruiter POV, we're inundated with tons of applicants. It's easy to understand why some companies / recruiters may want a mechanism to filter out obvious "fake" candidates.

HOWEVER - what if AI has a different opinion of what "good" looks like on a resume? What if it's definition of "this looks sus" is completely counter to how a RECRUITER would look at it?

I’m writing a follow-up to my 2020 book “Think Differently.” Part of that means interviewing people who are deep in recruitment and recruitment marketing at companies.

Here is what’s different this time. I’m using AI throughout the process. Specifically, I used Manus to research the people I plan to interview and build better questions before I get on the call.

Not generic questions. Questions informed by what someone has actually said, written, and worked on.

My first interview was with my friend and former coworker at Microsoft, Amy Miller . This was her reaction when I told her about the research I’d done beforehand.

The takeaway isn’t that AI is impressive. It’s that preparation is impressive, and AI just removed the excuse for not doing it well.

Many of you know I lost my mom to cancer just a few years ago. Harmony is right - those losses DO stay with you / us FOREVER.

Job search frustration often sits at the interesection of what's wanted, what's possible, what's talked about and what can't be seen. 

A most irritating 4 way stop to be sure.

✔️ Candidates ultimately want a YES answer, but when that's not possible, they want a decision / closure. Totally fair.
✔️ It's POSSIBLE to reply to every applicant, but often take the form of automated emails sent at weird times (delayed send is a blessing and a curse depending on your timezone probably).
✔️ Social media is inundated with folks who complain (and yes, call out / tag companies and recruiters) that they didn't get personalized responses regardless of stage.
✔️ Unless you are literally logging in to the ATS and have the recruiter view, you have NO IDEA what the competition looks like nor do you know how many qualified folks are under consideration.

So all of this creates a perfect storm of frustration for both sides. Now I personally like to assume positive intent. Recruiters want to provide a good experience regardless of outcome. Candidates want clear, fair, and transparent decisions (without waiting weeks). SO - how do we do all this?

Recruiters/hiring authorities, what actions are you taking to create the best possible candidate experience? Job seekers, what does acceptable follow up / follow through / communication look like at each stage?
