Senior Commercial Underwriter

As a Senior Commercial Underwriter at ONE Insurance Underwriting Managers, I have over 32 years of experience in the insurance industry. I hold a NQF5 in Insurance from the UNISA, which has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage risks effectively. My expertise lies in underwriting commercial insurance policies, where I evaluate the financial health and operational capabilities of businesses to determine their insurability. 

I started at M&F as a commercial underwriter in 1997 where I worked my way up to a Commercial Portfolio Manager.
We did a great deal of in office training run by M&F and learning on the job, we were taught how to rate and underwrite risks/do endorsements/renewals and to negotiate survey requirements.  We had a great deal of capacity so I also had exposure to writing the larger type risks.  I did the fast track course where we went through every department which was a great learning tool when dealing with claims and brokers queries.
- running bordereaux facilities
- checking documentation
- negotiated terms on quotes 
- dealing with claims queries and clarification on policy wordings
- dealing with underwriting queries
- writing motor traders internal and external and fleets.

I was at SA Eagle in April 2007, I worked as a Portfolio Manager running bordereaux facilities and dealing with direct brokers.
- negotiated terms on new business
- maintained existing relationships with brokers
- writing of high capacity complex risks 
- underwriting and claims queries
- working with the underwriting and claims departments to smooth over processes

I moved to HIC in April 2010 as a PM and was promoted to Branch Manager.
I have completed my RE1 and RE5 whilst at HIC.
- we wrote hospitality type risks, BNB, hotels, guesthouses etc.
- we were still in the space where we could write thatch risks but this was negotiated, surveys done and the risk underwritten to assist brokers.

I then went to One Insurance Solutions from 2014 as a Portfolio Manager.  One Insurance has 46 different products so this was a great learning curve.  We had to know the differences between all the products, what our mandates where within each product and what qualifies a risk to go into that product space.  
This entailed writing new business within our mandates.
- underwriting commercial risks
- learning to underwrite the other product options we had available, 
  Fuel/Hospitality/Tours/Engineering/Edu Product and the Edu Assist to name a few.
