The Boggs Center is New Jersey’s federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and part of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Pediatrics. Since its inception in 1983, The Center has emphasized a community-based, lifespan approach to meeting the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

The Community-Based Instruction (CBI) Project is a collaboration between The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities and the New Jersey Department of Education’s Office of Special Education. CBI is an evidence-based instructional practice that supports students with disabilities during the transition from school to adult life by promoting positive post-school outcomes in the areas of community living, postsecondary education, and careers. When the community (traditional or virtual) is utilized as a learning environment it provides practical, meaningful opportunities for students to develop skills in authentic experiences thus promoting greater independence, interdependence, and enhanced quality of life once reaching adulthood.

The CBI Project provides a variety of trainings for school personnel aimed at expanding quality implementation and sustainment of CBI across New Jersey. This is achieved through workshops and community of practice events that address the acquisition, application, and generalization of skills utilized within careers, postsecondary education, and community, while aligning to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. Technical assistance is available to educators in school districts throughout New Jersey interested in implementing effective CBI practices. The CBI Project is committed to providing information on instructional strategies, administrative support, person-centered recommendations, and customized guidance to promote successful post-school outcomes for students with disabilities.

I’ve spent my career building programs and supporting teams that help students with complex needs realize their full potential. With over two decades in special education, I’ve worked alongside students with autism, multiple disabilities, and behavioral challenges—always with a focus on individualized, strength-based, and inclusive learning.

My path has taken me from classrooms to district-level leadership and beyond. As a Training & Consultation Specialist through a Rutgers-NJDOE partnership, I had the privilege of collaborating with educators across New Jersey to improve outcomes for students statewide. I’ve led initiatives around transition planning, staff development, community-based instruction, and program compliance—always grounded in the belief that every student deserves a meaningful, self-determined life.

Currently, I serve as Supervisor of Educational Programs at the New Jersey Department of Children and Families Office of Education. In this role, I support the educational needs of some of our most vulnerable students by guiding school teams, navigating complex systems, and building bridges between instruction, care, and compliance.

Above all, I value purposeful leadership, collaboration, and clear communication—and I’m driven by a deep belief in the power of public education to change lives.
