Most independent recruiters prepare too much for sales calls.

They walk in with proposals ready, fee structures memorized, and three different contract options in their back pocket.

And then they wonder why the conversation feels forced.

Here's what I tell the recruiters I work with:

Think like a doctor, not a salesperson.

A doctor asks questions before prescribing treatment. They don't walk in with medication already in hand.

Same with sales calls with hiring managers. 

Your only job in the first conversation is to learn. Where are they at with the search? What have they tried? What's getting in the way? When do they need someone by?

The more you understand, the better you can prescribe a solution that actually fits.

Now, if you’re meeting with an early stage start-up, one question every recruiter needs to ask but feels awkward asking:

"Do you have a budget for this?"

Here's how to ask it without sounding like you're interrogating them:

"I imagine when I start reaching out to candidates, they're going to ask about your company, your funding situation, the stability, etc. So when they ask, what should I tell them?"

Same question. Softer delivery. And now they're answering it in a way that feels helpful to them, not intrusive.

One more thing.

Sometimes you'll talk to a hiring manager who genuinely needs help but has no money to pay you.

Most recruiters walk away from that conversation.

I don't.

Here's what I say instead:

"Based on your current situation, my standard engagement and fee probably wouldn't make sense for you right now. But I'd still love to help. How about this…let me send you five profiles of people I think could be a strong fit that you’re welcome to reach out to about your opportunity. If you like what you see, would you be open to writing me a LinkedIn recommendation about the quality of candidates I brought to you?"

What Most People Get Wrong About Alcohol

Last week may end up being one of those moments we talk about years from now.

Not because of a new drug.
Not because of a new device.

But because AI quietly crossed a line in healthcare.

Robert Wachter laid this out clearly in his piece “The Week That AI Crossed the Line in Healthcare” (link below), and I agree with his core point:
AI is moving from advice to action.

On one side, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, allowing people to upload their medical data and get answers that actually reflect their history, labs, and context.

On the other, Utah approved a pilot where AI can refill certain prescriptions without a physician signing off.

For years, AI in health stayed safely in the “support” role:
• Take notes in meetings
• Prep for visits
• Answer questions

Now it’s starting to make decisions that change care.

Here’s the part that makes people uncomfortable:

For many routine situations, AI may already be more consistent than the system we rely on today.

People wait months for refills.
Primary care is overwhelmed.
And millions get medications through rushed, checkbox video visits with clinicians they’ll never see again.

If an AI can handle low-risk refills, ask the right follow-up questions, and escalate when something looks off — is that dangerous?

Or is pretending the current system is working the bigger risk?

This isn’t about replacing doctors.
It’s about acknowledging reality and finding the ways in which AI can transform our healthcare system for the better.

The question isn’t:
“Should AI be involved in care?”

It’s:
“How do fully leverage the power of AI to build a healthcare system that is 10X better?”

I watched a clip of Peter Attia on 60 Minutes answering rapid-fire health questions.

What stood out wasn’t the individual answers.
It was the pattern behind them.

Over and over, the message was the same:
Most health debates focus on things that don’t move outcomes very much.

That matches what we see in practice.

It’s easy to get pulled into optimizing the margins.
Harder and more important to build the foundations well.

The biggest gains tend to come from a small set of priorities:
→ Sleep that actually restores you
→ Maintaining muscle as you age
→ Getting enough protein to support that muscle
→ Hormones handled carefully and individually
→ Reducing obvious exposures where it’s practical to do so

That’s how we design our protocols.
Not because it’s simple.
Because it’s effective.

Five or six well-chosen changes usually account for most of the benefit.
Everything else tends to matter far less than people expect.

Health isn’t about chasing every new idea.

When sleep timing is unstable:
→ Energy drops
→ Recovery slows
→ Hormones drift

Everything else becomes easier to sustain.

You don’t need perfect sleep.
You need a rhythm your body can rely on.

Health isn’t built in big moments.

Elon Musk made one of his boldest predictions earlier this year.

He suggested that with rapid advances in AI, computing power, and robotic precision, humanoid robots could eventually perform complex medical procedures more consistently than humans — and at scale.

His argument is straightforward:
 🏥 Healthcare already faces a shortage of skilled clinicians
 ⏳ Training takes years
 ⚠️ Human error is unavoidable
 🤖 Machines don’t get tired, don’t forget, and can update continuously

It’s a provocative claim.
And it points to a real shift already underway.

AI is getting exceptionally good at:
 🔍 Pattern recognition
 🎯 Precision tasks
 📊 Standardized decision-making

Where this becomes interesting isn’t whether machines will outperform humans in specific technical tasks — many already do.

The real question is how medicine changes when execution becomes cheaper, faster, and more scalable.

Because care isn’t just about performing a procedure.
 It’s about judgment.
 Context.
 Values.
 And trust over time.

The future of healthcare won’t be humans versus machines.
It will be systems where technology raises the floor — and humans stay responsible for the decisions that matter most.

If this leads to broader access, fewer errors, and better outcomes, that’s a win.

That line from Dr. Eric Topol on the Mel Robbins Podcast stuck with me.

We’ve known exercise is good for us for a long time.
What’s different now is how clearly aging science shows its impact on biological age — not just lifespan.

Here’s what my own exercise protocol looks like today:

➡️ Strength training several times per week
To preserve muscle, bone density, and long-term independence.

➡️ Cardio as a constant
Guided by VO₂ max and performance data — not motivation.

➡️ Daily movement
Walking, rucking, skiing when I can. Movement doesn’t have to be formal to count.

➡️ Flexibility over perfection
Some weeks are structured.
Some weeks are lighter.
I adjust instead of quitting.

This combination delivers the biggest return:

➟ Resilience

That’s why exercise sits at the center of how I think about longevity.

Ice cream came up on Dr. Mike’s podcast, and his answer surprised a lot of people.

Not because he praised ice cream.
But because he didn’t moralize it.

The point wasn’t that ice cream is “healthy.”
The point was that enjoying food — and enjoying it with other people — matters.

Health doesn’t exist in isolation.
It lives inside real life.

👉Shared meals.
👉Celebrations.
👉Rituals.
👉Pleasure.

Ice cream sits in that space.

Not as a superfood.
Not as a problem.
But as something people enjoy together.
And that counts for more than we often admit.

When nutrition turns into constant restriction, it quietly erodes:

That’s usually where plans fall apart.
