Honest Question About Coffee 

Is it just me or does one cup of caffeinated coffee now feel like the exact right amount?

Somewhere along the way, my tolerance quietly retired.

Please tell me I’m not alone.

Entrepreneurs create something from nothing, often at a level of sacrifice most people never see.

You carry risk, financial, emotional, reputational.

You show up every single day because no one else will.

But when success finally materializes, the landscape shifts.
Suddenly it’s taxes, liquidity decisions, planning, and navigating the implications of the wealth you’ve built.

Turning 50 this year has clarified something for me.

Nothing is more important to my quality of life than my physical fitness.

It keeps me sane when work is heavy.
It gives me energy instead of stealing it.
And most importantly, it lets me keep up with my 5- and 7-year-old without feeling like I’m borrowing energy from tomorrow.

These days my routine is simple and sustainable:
• Cardio
• CrossFit
• Strength training
Usually five days a week
Rest days look like long walks or yoga

It’s not about aesthetics.
It’s about capacity.

When Doing the Right Thing Isn’t Enough

I don’t often tell stories about clients we part ways with. The handful of times it has happened, those chapters close quietly and respectfully.

But occasionally, there’s a lesson worth sharing. 
We started working together with clarity. We laid out the objective for a specific investment account. Not hypotheticals. Not market-beating ambition. A clearly defined role for this money within a larger life context.

The mandate was conservative by design.
The time horizon was long, roughly 15-20 years.
The purpose was stability, liquidity, and reliability.

This wasn’t “swing for the fences” money. It was foundational money. Money that needed to do its job quietly and predictably.

And for 18 months, that’s exactly what it did.

We measured against the objectives we agreed on. The approach was disciplined, regardless of market conditions.

In March of 2025, when markets pulled back, we stayed the course.
When they rebounded, we stayed the course.

Not because we were stubborn.
Because the plan didn’t change.

There were calls and emails prompted by headlines, forecasts, and predictions.

Each time, the conversation came back to the same place.
We are investors, not traders.
This portfolio wasn’t designed to react to every piece of news.
Changes would happen at the margins, thoughtfully, deliberately, and rarely.

Despite that, dissatisfaction persisted.

Not because the goals weren’t met.
Not because the results were poor.
But because there wasn’t enough activity.

After revisiting the same issue multiple times, it became clear. We weren’t misaligned on performance. We were misaligned on philosophy.

Ultimately, we decided to part ways. The client chose to move the funds into a savings account. He expressed frustration about paying fees, even though the portfolio was performing well after factoring in those fees.

That’s on me.

From the start, this relationship was too focused on returns and not enough on planning, despite my guidance. Planning is what we lead with. Returns matter, but they are a byproduct of a disciplined process, not the purpose of the relationship.

Cost is only a factor in the absence of value.
And value looks different depending on what you believe progress actually is.

For some people, movement feels like progress.
For others, discipline does.

Sometimes, the hardest work in investing isn’t making a decision.
It’s having the patience to do nothing when doing nothing is the right move.

Mistaking activity for productivity is one of the most expensive mistakes an investor can make. And it’s a line I won’t cross, even if it means saying goodbye.

Because my responsibility isn’t to make portfolios busy.
It’s to make plans work.

Personal wealth doesn’t operate the same way.

Constant tinkering, reacting, and pivoting often introduces more risk than reward. Wealth is built through alignment, patience, and repeating sound decisions over long periods of time.

What creates revenue growth doesn’t always create financial security.

Different arena.
Different rules.

We remember the winners.
We forget the graveyard.

For every innovation that reshaped the world, there were countless others that promised the same thing and quietly disappeared.

When making financial decisions, this matters.
Chasing the next big thing often ignores the far more powerful driver of long-term success: consistency.

Boring done well beats exciting done poorly.

Every generation believes it’s living through unprecedented change.
Some of that is true. Most of it isn’t.

Airplanes changed travel.
The internet changed communication.

But for every true breakthrough, there are dozens of ideas that were simply new, not better.
Novelty grabs attention. Fundamentals create outcomes.

In investing, business, and life, the question isn’t “Is this new?”

The Standard I Refuse to Lower Anymore

I’m not talking about cutting people off.
I’m not talking about “protecting my peace.”

I’m talking about the work.

Because somewhere along the way, our world started rewarding noise over results.
Big promises. Fancy talk. Endless ideas. Zero follow-through.

And I’m done playing that game.

The standard I refuse to lower anymore is this: real results, or it doesn’t count.

Not vibes.
Not motivation.
Not “we had a great meeting.”

If it doesn’t show up in execution, in numbers, in behavior, it’s just entertainment.

Here’s what that standard looks like in real life:

1. Truth over comfort.
I will never sell a comforting story when the numbers are telling a different one.
If your pricing is broken, we fix it.
If your labor is leaking, we find it.
If your leadership team is avoiding hard conversations, we address it.

2. Clarity over complexity.
You don’t need 47 KPIs and a dashboard that looks like a spaceship.
You need a few numbers that actually run the business, and the discipline to follow them weekly.

3. Follow-through over “potential.”
I respect talent. I respect effort.
But I trust what you do consistently.
Plans don’t change companies. Execution does.

4. Standards that hold under pressure.
Anybody can look sharp when things are easy.
The real test is when you’re slammed, short-staffed, and stressed.
That’s when your real standards show up.

And if I’m being honest, this standard has made my life harder sometimes.

Because it’s easier to be liked than it is to be real.
It’s easier to say “great job” than “this isn’t working.”
It’s easier to keep things smooth than to push for what actually moves the needle.

But I didn’t get into this to be a cheerleader.

I got into this because I’ve watched good people work their tails off and still struggle, not because they’re lazy, but because the business is leaking profit in places they can’t see.

So no, I won’t lower the standard.

Not for the sake of comfort.
Not for the sake of speed.
Not for the sake of being popular.

If we’re doing this, we’re doing it for real.

How I Showed Up Today

Today wasn’t a highlight reel.

It was one of those days where the to do list is loud, the tasks keeps growing, and your brain is trying to run three operating systems at once.

I woke up already carrying weight. Not the kind you can bench press. The kind you feel in your chest.

And if I’m being honest, I had a moment where I wanted to check out. Not quit. Just disappear for a day. Go quiet. Go numb. Let everybody else “handle it.” - Yes even after all those days of doing nothing during the holidays. 

But I didn’t.

Not because I’m some superhero.

Because I’ve learned something the hard way: your life doesn’t change when you feel motivated. It changes when you show up anyway.

So here’s how I showed up today:

I showed up honest.
I didn’t pretend I was fine when I wasn’t. I named it. I owned it.

I showed up calm.
Even when I felt irritated, I didn’t hand that emotion to the people I spoke with like it was their problem to carry.

I showed up responsible.
I didn’t point fingers. I didn’t hide. I asked, “What’s mine to fix?” and then I started fixing it.

I showed up present.
Not half-listening. Not multitasking. I looked people in the eye. I listened like it mattered. Because it did!

I showed up human.
I gave myself permission to be imperfect today, while still refusing to be ineffective.

And yeah, I’m still tired. Still have challenges to solve. Still have pressure on me.

But tonight I can say this with a straight face:
I didn’t abandon myself today.

If you’re in a season where it feels heavy, hear me clearly:

You don’t need to win the day.
You just need to show up like the person you’re becoming.

So I’ll ask you the same question I asked myself tonight:

How did you show up today?

If your business doubled tomorrow, would your profit double…
or would your problems double?

Things I Wish I Knew 20 Years Ago

Twenty years ago, I thought I needed to have it all figured out.

I thought confidence meant certainty.
I thought success meant never looking tired.
I thought leadership meant carrying everything alone and acting like it didn’t weigh anything.

Boy was I wrong.

Here’s what I wish I knew back then, before the scars taught me.

1. Being “the strong one” can become your favorite hiding place.
You can build a whole identity around being reliable… and never let anyone close enough to see you’re struggling. Strength is good. Isolation isn’t.

2. Your habits will take you further than your talent ever will.
Talent opens the door. Habits decide whether you stay in the room. The boring stuff, done consistently, beats the heroic effort done occasionally.

3. Most anxiety is unpaid debt to your future self.
It’s what happens when you keep promising you’ll handle it later, while your brain quietly knows you won’t. Do the hard thing now. Your nervous system will send you a thank-you note.

4. You’re not “behind.” You’re just comparing your middle to someone else’s highlight.
Half the pressure you feel is imaginary. It’s you trying to win a race you never signed up for.

5. The people who love you don’t need you impressive. They need you present.
They will not remember your grind. They will remember your availability. Make sure the people you’re doing it for don’t only get what’s left of you.

6. Boundaries aren’t selfish. They’re leadership.
If you don’t protect your time, your energy, your standards, your sanity, the world will happily spend them for you. Then you’ll resent people who were only doing what you allowed.

7. You can’t outwork what you won’t face.
You can stack wins, money, clients, achievements… and still feel empty if you avoid the real stuff. Eventually, life collects.

8. Humility is a superpower.
The fastest way to grow is to admit you don’t know, get help, and stay teachable, stay teachable (said it twice on purpose). Pride is expensive.

9. You will become what you repeatedly tolerate.
In your business. In your relationships. In your health. In your own mind. Tolerance is training. Choose carefully what you normalize.

10. You don’t need a new life. You need a tighter grip on your current one.
More truth. More discipline. More gratitude. More alignment. Less noise.

I wish I could go back and tell the 20-year younger me this one thing:

Stop trying to prove yourself. Start building yourself.

And if you’re reading this and you feel like you’re carrying a lot…
You’re not weak. You’re just in a chapter that requires more of you.

Keep going. But do it with your eyes open this time.
