My Mother spent her final decade on Earth 'making do'. 

She raised me on her own...a single Mom at 38.

When it came time to think about retirement, her answer was always the same:

"I won't live that long", she would always tell me. (and it always hurt to hear her say it)

As it turns out, she DID live that long...a full 10 years longer than she thought.

And she wasn't financially prepared for it.

All she had during that last decade she lived was her social security income.

And it wasn't enough to support her in retirement.

She spent the last 10 years of her life living with family and friends.

She "made do".

So what did I do when I grew up?

I became a Retirement Planner for Single Mothers.

Not happy with the solutions presented to me, I knew there was a better way, and I was determined to find it.

After implementing my training, many clients report waking up happy, even on a Monday morning. They have shifted from living in anxiety to peace and finally sleeping through the night after years of wrestling with sleep.

I'm always amazed at how many people raise their hands—typically, 60-90% of the room.

One key point I love to share is the reason so many of us struggle with sleep: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.

In other words, if we face energy-draining situations during the day—like losing a client, an argument with a colleague, or sales teams not meeting their numbers—our bodies react with a fight-or-flight response, throwing our nervous system out of sync.

If your nervous system stays out of balance for days, weeks, months, or even years, 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲.

When we're in a state of worry, overwhelm, or stress, our bodies naturally want to keep us awake. The brain thinks we’re in danger, making it hard to fall asleep. 😟

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗱 —so your brain and body don’t feel the need to defend themselves or stay alert. This prevents your brain from thinking there’s a villain lurking around the corner.

I often work with military clients who have struggled with sleep, especially when the sun goes down. One soldier shared, “That’s when the enemy can attack, and we’re more vulnerable when it’s dark outside.”

He trained himself to stay awake at night. After returning home, he continued to have trouble sleeping because his nervous system was wired to stay alert when it was dark.

After teaching him some basic self-regulation techniques to calm his nervous system and bring his brain and body back into balance, he called me the next day. He said, “I haven’t sle𝑝t this soundly in six months.”

Emotional burnout does not always look like falling apart.
Sometimes it looks like functioning so well that no one realizes how tired you are.

Human beings were never designed to live in constant output without renewal.
There is a natural rhythm to strength, focus, and restoration, and when that rhythm is ignored, exhaustion follows.

Emotional burnout often shows up quietly.
Saying “I’m fine” because explaining feels like too much.
Pulling back from connection because the energy just is not there.
Feeling relief when plans are canceled.
Being exhausted by even small decisions.
Looking okay on the outside while feeling worn down on the inside.

This is not weakness.
It is not a lack of discipline or purpose.

Burnout is not a failure of character.

Have you ever had to have a difficult conversation with a friend, family member, or colleague?

You know the kind, where you replay every possible version in your head, scripting what you’ll say, imagining how they’ll react.

Maybe you’ve carried it around with you for weeks. Every time you thought about it, you felt the stress. The tension crept into your neck and shoulders. Your heart raced.

It hijacked your thoughts during meetings. It kept you up at night.

You found yourself rehearsing the conversation over and over, living through dozens of versions of it in your mind. Most of them ending badly. The anticipation building with each replay.

We’ve all done it.

But here’s what’s interesting: when you finally reached out and talked to that person, it probably wasn’t nearly as bad as you thought it would be. In fact, you might have felt immediate relief the moment it was over.

I had a similar situation recently with a conversation I needed to have with a friend. I was dreading it.

But when I finally did it and made very clear intentions of what my hope was—to keep our friendship intact, find compassion, and seek understanding—that’s exactly what happened.

The conversation I’d been torturing myself over for weeks? It brought us closer. The anxiety I’d been carrying melted away. And I realized I’d been suffering in my imagination far more than I ever did in reality.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹. 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗱𝗼𝘁𝗲.

Whatever conversation you’ve been avoiding, whatever task you’ve been overthinking—take the smallest step toward it today.

Because the mental rehearsal is exhausting you more than the actual event ever will.

Over time, with consistent mental rehearsal, people reach a point where they feel so whole, so satisfied with themselves and their lives, that their old limitations—be it a disease, setback, or self-doubt—lose their grip.

You know that thing you’re DEFINITELY not thinking about right now? Yeah, THAT thing. The one that’s absolutely NOT taking up mental real estate while you read this.

We’ve all been there: stuck in the mental hamster wheel of doom, where telling yourself “don’t think about it” is basically like telling yourself “think about it LOUDER and with more anxiety!”

The good news? Your brain isn’t broken. It’s just following its own rules. And once you know the cheat codes, you can actually hack your way out of the spiral.

3 Neuroscience-Backed Ways to Redirect Your Brain

1. Give Your Brain a Better Job
 Your brain is like that overachieving friend who NEEDS a project. When you tell it “stop thinking about X,” it hears “make X the ONLY project!”

Instead: Give it something specific to focus on. Activating a different neural pathway weakens the old one. Thanks, Hebb’s Law.

Do this: When anxiety spirals start, name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear. Your brain can’t obsess AND count at the same time.

2. Energy Flows Where Attention Goes
 Every time you think “I need to STOP worrying about this presentation,” you’re literally pouring mental energy into… the presentation. Your brain doesn’t process negatives well.

Instead: Redirect your attention to your desired state. What DO you want to think about?

Do this: Replace “I won’t mess up this meeting” with “I’m prepared and I communicate clearly.” Your brain needs a destination, not just an escape route.

3. Repetition Rewires
 That anxious thought pattern has a well-worn neural groove because you’ve thought it 10,000 times. You can’t demolish it overnight, but you CAN build a better road next to it.

Do this: Set a phone reminder every 2 hours that asks “Where is my attention right now?” Gently redirect to your chosen focus. Do this for 21 to 30 days and watch your default setting change.

The bottom line? Stop trying to starve the problem. Feed the solution instead.

Where you place your attention IS where you place your energy. Choose wisely.
