These basketball players chose to support each other across team lines. Not because they had to. Because of who they are.

That's character.

And it's the most underrated leadership skill in the workplace.

You can teach someone strategy. You can teach technical skills. You can teach productivity systems.

But character? That's harder.

Here's what I've learned working with executives: character isn't built in workshops or written in company values posters.

Character is built in moments of stress when no one is looking.

When your competitor wins the client and you congratulate them instead of talking behind their back.

When your direct report is struggling and you help them succeed instead of replacing them.

Leaders don't foster character by talking about it. They foster it by modeling it under pressure.

When leaders regulate their own stress response, they create psychological safety for their teams.

Research shows that teams with high psychological safety are 27% more likely to report high performance (NFP Research, 2025).

But psychological safety doesn't come from policies. It comes from character.

It comes from leaders who stay calm when things go wrong. Who support instead of blame. Who lift people up even when it's inconvenient.

Your team doesn't just watch what you say. They watch how you regulate yourself when the pressure is on.

Do you stay supportive when someone fails? Or do you react with anger?

Do you extend grace when someone is struggling? Or do you withdraw it?

Do you help people up when they're down? Or do you step over them?

Character is everything because your internal state determines your actions.

The executives I work with train themselves to regulate under pressure so they can show up with integrity when it matters most.

A plain package arrived at my door before Veterans Day. I had no idea it contained something my father tossed away 37 years ago.

My father, Brigadier General Cary Hutchinson, worked with Nancy Mullen for years. On his last day in the US Army, he was walking out of his office for the final time.

He tossed his cap to Nancy and said, "I guess I won't be needing this hat anymore."

That was 1987.

Nancy kept it. For 37 years.

She didn't put it in a drawer or forget about it. She treasured it like something sacred.

Fast forward 37 years. When my father passed away I posted a memorial on Facebook.

Nancy saw it.

She immediately tracked down our address. She told him she still had the cap. She wanted to send it back to our family.

When that plain package arrived before Veterans Day, we had no idea what was inside.

The moment I opened it and saw my father's cap, I was flooded with memories.

Suddenly I was a little girl again, watching my hero in uniform. Seeing the dedication and sacrifice that defined him and every Veteran I grew up around.

That cap represents everything he stood for: integrity, duty, service, sacrifice.

Nancy didn't have to keep it. She didn't have to spend 37 years protecting something my father had literally tossed away. She didn't have to track us down.

But she did.

Because she understood what it meant. Not just to him, but to his family.

This is what I think about on Veterans Day. Not just the people who serve, but the people who honor that service in ways we never see coming.

Nancy gave us back a piece of my father we never knew we'd lost.

To Nancy: Thank you for safeguarding this treasure and giving us this unexpected gift.

To my father and all Veterans: That you for your service and dedication to our country. 🫡

Your circle of friends and coworkers affects your health more than your gym membership. Sound dramatic?

It’s backed by decades of research.

A 2025 Cornell study found that people with strong, sustained social support actually age slower at the cellular level.

Their biological clocks ticked slower.
Their bodies showed less chronic inflammation.
Their mental health was more stable and resilient.

Here’s why:
Your brain doesn’t separate emotional pain from physical pain.
When you feel excluded, judged, or unsupported, it activates the same threat centers in the brain that process actual physical injury.

But the opposite is also true.
Supportive environments calm the brain and reduce stress at a neurological level.

 "You got this"
 "It's yours"
 "Come on"

The encouragement of his team moved him out of fear and into action.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻:

This is exactly what happens inside your workplace.

Your team members are constantly scanning their environment for cues of threat or safety.

A dismissive tone, silence after speaking up, or being overlooked for a contribution can trigger the same stress response as a physical threat.

On the other hand, a well-timed word of encouragement, appreciation, or support can reverse it instantly.

Supported people think more clearly, sleep better, make stronger decisions, and stay longer.

Teams that lack psychological safety and connection may still show up. But they won’t show up at their best.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗼 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆:
Start your next team meeting with a "peer highlight" moment.
Ask each person to name one specific way a teammate helped them recently.

This creates a loop of positive reinforcement that activates safety, engagement, and trust.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺?

Leadership can be exhausting. It requires you to be confident and humble. And at the same time, strong and vulnerable, fast and patient. No wonder it can be hard.

You need confidence to make decisions. But arrogance kills learning and credibility.

Your team needs empathy and support. But clarity matters too, even when the truth stings.

You need input to make informed choices. But when time is short, you have to decide and move.

Here's what makes this even harder: these aren't either-or choices. They're 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵-𝗮𝗻𝗱 requirements.

The solution isn't picking one side. It's developing the capacity to regulate yourself enough to know which truth the moment requires.

When your internal state is dysregulated, you can default to extremes.

Stress pushes you toward rigid control instead of empowered accountability.

Fear makes you rush decisions instead of building momentum with patience.

Exhaustion turns optimism into blind spots instead of realistic hope.

Research shows that leaders under chronic stress have reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for complex decision-making and holding nuanced perspectives (American Heart Association, 2021).

But when you can regulate your stress response, you gain access to nuance.

You can project confidence while staying curious about what you don't know.

You can be transparent about challenges while protecting information that would create unnecessary alarm.

You can move with speed when it's time to act and practice patience when the situation isn't ready.

Resilience training is expanding your capacity to hold complexity.

Train your internal state, and you unlock the ability to navigate the gray.

Leadership can be hard. But it gets easier when you stop fighting the contradictions and start training yourself to hold both truths.

DARPA awarded us $1.5 million to help combat soldiers battle stress.

Together with partners, we built a biofeedback gaming app for the Department of Defense.

It taught soldiers to control their internal state regardless of what was happening externally.

The research got published. The app made the cover of The Wire.

Here's how it all happened:

I answered an RFP from DARPA and won a $1.5 million grant to create something the military desperately needed.

A way to train stress resilience that actually worked.

Most military stress training focuses on mental toughness. Push through. Suck it up. React faster.

We took a different approach.

We built the Stress Resilience Training System, a biofeedback gamification app that used games and real-time physiological feedback to teach service members how to self-regulate.

Not manage their thoughts. Regulate their internal state.

The difference matters.

When you're in combat or high-stress situations, you don't have time to think your way through it. Your body is already reacting.

We trained the stress response itself. Teaching the body to shift from reactive threat mode to calm control, even under extreme pressure.

The results were published in the American Journal of Cardiology. Peer-reviewed research proving this works.

And The Wire magazine put our app on the cover.

Why am I telling you this?

Because the same system that worked for soldiers in combat works for executives in boardrooms.

The stress response doesn't know the difference between a firefight and a budget meeting. It just knows the threat.

And if you can't regulate your internal state, your body stays in reactive mode. You make worse decisions. Your team feels your stress. Your performance suffers.

This isn't theory. It's not woo-woo.

It's backed by military research, published in medical journals, and proven with thousands of service members.

Trust isn't built by having all the answers.

Look at those phrases in the graphic. Every single one requires you to do something uncomfortable:

 - Admit you were wrong.
 - Say you don't know.
 - Disagree openly.
 - Set boundaries on what you can commit to.

When your stress response is activated, your brain goes into self-protection mode.

Your prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for thoughtful communication and nuanced thinking, gets overridden by your threat response.

You become defensive instead of accountable.

You rush to answer instead of pausing to think.

You avoid uncomfortable truths instead of being transparent.

You justify instead of owning mistakes.

Research shows that leaders under chronic stress have reduced prefrontal cortex activity, the exact brain region needed for integrity-based communication (American Heart Association, 2021).

You can't think your way into speaking with integrity when your body is in threat mode.

Here's what changes everything:

When you train your stress response to stay regulated under pressure, you create the physiological space to choose integrity.

You can say "I was wrong" without your ego taking over.

You can say "I need to think about this" without feeling like you're losing credibility.

You can disagree respectfully without getting defensive.

You can admit you don't know without spiraling into inadequacy.

The gap between knowing you should speak with integrity and actually doing it? That's internal self-regulation.

Every phrase in that graphic requires you to override a threat response:

The urge to protect your image when you make a mistake.

The pressure to have an immediate answer when you don't know.

The discomfort of setting honest boundaries instead of over-committing.

Leaders who consistently speak with integrity have trained their internal state to stay calm enough to choose honesty over self-protection.

Your team doesn't need you to be perfect. They need you to be regulated enough to be honest.

Look again.
You may be the light God placed in that space, your home, your team, your relationships, to bring clarity, peace, and steady leadership.

The world doesn’t need more people trying to push through stress.
It needs leaders and executives who know how to regulate their internal state and reflect the One who calms the storm.

That’s the work I do.
That’s the work I walk people through every day.
And it’s the work that changes everything.

“𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.” We all say it. But what if it’s not just about time?

What if it’s about commitment?

We make time for what we’re truly committed to, consciously or not. So when we feel like we don’t have time, it may not be about the hours in the day. It may be about what we’re unconsciously committed to:

 - Staying in motion because stillness feels unsafe.
 - Responding to every demand because we fear letting someone down.
 - Living in urgency because we’ve equated stress with value.

When we live in stress, we live in the past. And when the body is stuck in the past, the future is just more of the same.

We repeat what we don't repair.

So when you hear yourself say, “I don’t have enough time,” do this:

𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲.
𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁.
𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀.

Breathe in slowly through your nose, imagining your breath flowing in and out of your heart or chest area. Breathe a little deeper and slower than usual.

𝗜𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲.
𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲.

Repeat this 10 times.

This simple practice helps shift your body out of a reactive state and into 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀, the place where presence lives.

Because presence requires one thing: 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆.

And from that state, you can ask the real question:
What am I actually committed to right now?

Is it clarity? Peace? Connection?
Or is it control, busyness, proving, avoiding?

You don’t need more hours in the day.
You need fewer moments spent in patterns that no longer serve you.

One of my clients, Michael, a veteran and New York City SWAT officer told me, “I used to come home and still be at war in my head. Now, I’m here. My kids feel it. My wife feels it. I feel it.”

Time isn’t the issue.
𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀.
And presence starts with a choice.

He was 88, a veteran, and about to lose his home. He sat in his wheelchair and wept... then the judge stepped down from the bench.

Arthur, an 88-year-old Vietnam veteran, sat in his wheelchair in the back of the courtroom. His wife was gone, he had no children, and his small house was falling apart. He'd been cited for code violations he couldn't afford to fix a broken porch, peeling paint, and a leaking roof.

The judge, a 65-year-old man known for his stern, "by-the-book" rulings, called his case.
Arthur listened, his hands trembling, as the city attorney listed the violations and the thousands in fines. When the attorney formally requested the court's permission to condemn the property if the fines weren't paid, the finality of it hit him. This was it. He was losing his home.

The judge began to speak. "Mr. Harris, the city is asking for... "

He stopped. He just looked at the frail old man, who had now buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking in a silent, heartbreaking sob.

The courtroom went quiet. The judge, his own face tightening with emotion, looked conflicted. "We will take a 15-minute recess," he announced abruptly, banging his gavel.
When he returned, the courtroom was buzzing. The judge looked not at the attorneys, but directly at Arthur.

"Mr. Harris," the judge said, his voice softer now. "I spent my recess on the phone. I have spoken with the director of the local VFW, who is a friend of mine, and with our county's Veterans' fund. All fines are hereby dismissed." Arthur looked up, his face a mask of stunned disbelief.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "a local contractor's union has already pledged to do all the repairs, pro bono, starting next week."

This second wave of kindness was too much. Arthur, who had been crying from despair, now broke down in tears of overwhelming relief.

The judge then did something no one had ever seen. He stepped down from his high bench, walked directly to the wheelchair, and pulled the old soldier into a full, strong hug. As Arthur wept into the judge's robe, he whispered, his voice trembling, "I... I didn't think anybody cared anymore."

The judge held him tighter and whispered back, his voice thick: "We do. I do. You served us. We don't forget that."

Anxiety isn't just in your head.

It's in your body, your thoughts, and your emotions all at once.

Physical symptoms: Dizziness. Sweating. Muscle tension. Shakiness.

Mental symptoms: Overthinking. Feeling overwhelmed. Negative thoughts.

Emotional symptoms: Irritated. Crying. Guilt. Depressed. Exhaustion. Impatience. Anger.

Here's what most people don't understand about anxiety:

Your thoughts trigger your emotions, which trigger your body.

It's not three separate problems. It's one cascading response.

You have a thought: "I'm not prepared for this meeting."

That thought triggers an emotion: fear, inadequacy.

That emotion triggers your body: heart racing, sweating, muscle tension.

And then your body feeds back to your brain: "Something is wrong. There's a threat."

Which creates more anxious thoughts. Which creates more emotional distress. Which creates more physical symptoms.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽.

And here's the problem: you can't think your way out of a stress response your body is running.

Because logic lives in your prefrontal cortex. But anxiety lives in your autonomic stress response.

You have to train the body to shift out of threat mode.

When you regulate your internal state, the physical symptoms calm down. When the body calms, the thoughts quiet. When the thoughts quiet, the emotions stabilize.

You break the loop by training the stress response itself.

Not by managing thoughts. Not by pushing through. By regulating the physiological state that's driving all three systems.
