I hate how often I check my phone. So I'm doing something kind of extreme.

I just bought a Brick....

....the little device that helps you lock yourself out of social apps.

You tap your phone on it…and suddenly Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, even LinkedIn……gone.

And yeah, the irony isn’t lost on me:

I work in social media. My job is literally to create programming for the largest digital culture event in the world!

But I’ve had this uncomfortable realization lately:

I really need to control my own screen time, but it’s way harder than I want to admit.

I pick up my phone 50+ times a day without thinking. I open an app for “work” and somehow end up deep in random content I didn’t even choose.

And the scary part is.....I understand the game, how the hooks work and how the algorithms are designed.

And it still works on me.

Screen addiction is real, and it's not getting any easier for both adults and teens. 

I just think people working in the creator economy are better at rationalizing it. 

“It’s for work.”
“I’m staying informed.”
“I’m building my brand.”

I literally do this, and yes, sometimes that’s true.

But a lot of the time…it’s just dopamine dressed up as productivity.

So I’m trying something new.

Instead of relying on willpower (I tried that, it didn’t work), I’m hoping this little Brick will help. 

I have no idea if it’ll work, but I’m giving it a go.

We live in a world obsessed with the next new thing.

→ New platform.
→ New format.
→ New AI tool.
→ New creator blowing up overnight.

The Internet is great, but it also has a short memory.

But let's not forget, before the brand deals, the venture funding, and the billion-view channels…

....there were creators experimenting with weird formats, inconsistent monetization (or no monetization at all!), and platforms that barely understood what creators were, never mind what they were building.

The people who built the foundation for the 'creator economy', the ones who made the “next thing” possible, often get forgotten.

And that’s exactly why I love what we’re doing with the VidCon Hall of Fame.

Jim’s post below touches on the origin story. When the idea of an awards show first came up, Hank pushed for something slightly different: a way to recognize lasting impact, not just who had the biggest moment that year.

→ It’s about impact over time.
→ The people who shaped the creator economy before it was called the creator economy.
→ The creators who took risks when there was no playbook.

The result……the VidCon Hall of Fame. A way to celebrate the creators whose work helped shape the entire ecosystem which we all know and love.

I was lucky enough to be part of the team building out the Hall of Fame process this past year, and honestly, it’s been one of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on at VidCon.

Because celebrating creators is great.

But celebrating the pioneers who made the entire ecosystem possible?...

....That matters even more.

Jim and the committee of 52 industry OGs, creators, execs, and pioneers are now collecting nominations for this year’s class, and I can’t wait to see who gets inducted this year!

Hank Green killed the VidCon Awards Show. And he was right to do it.

Shortly after we sold VidCon to Viacom, there was a push from the extended VidCon team to launch a full creator awards show. Hank vetoed it. His argument: awards pick favorites, and VidCon exists to celebrate all creators, not elevate a chosen few. Hard to argue with that.

What he suggested instead was a Hall of Fame. A focus on lifetime achievement rather than moment-in-time popularity. Inherently less political, easier to judge, and more durable. It was a better idea.

I piled on, and lobbied for embedding golden play triangles in the plaza outside the Anaheim Convention Center…  like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but for creators. 

Oddly no one thought THAT was a good idea.

But like many great VidCon ideas, the idea languished....  

Until Sarah Tortoreti Colosimo, Renata Duque and Jacques Keyser eventually resurrected and turned it into a powerful and meaningful celebration. Now in year two, the selection committee has grown to 52 members. It’s an impressive group and I'm honored to be one of them.
