Evolved the vision and mission and repositioned go-to-market strategy away from DTC towards a B2B model to create a more efficient and scalable trajectory while averting a costly DTC luxury brand and retail buildout. Updated logo and wordmark to reflect a more modern and technology-forward brand in the space. Built a small but mighty marketing team that helped engineer our CX and technology platforms, B2B sales strategy, materials, and overall company strategy, and prepped for an entire brand relaunch that was ultimately paused.

Working closely with the CEO (Cathy Butler), we rebuilt a healthy and thriving agency culture with a 75% win rate and triple-digit growth. Among many new clients, we won 2 major creative AOR relationships with work spanning site builds, digital campaigns and social, creative tech, television and print which greatly expanded our capabilities and almost tripled our headcount. In less than two years we nearly doubled revenue and headcount. Now working hand in hand with new CEO Steven Moy to architect a significant agency pivot with a new vision, capabilities and entirely new pipeline development. Also leading the development of our consulting capability, DTC labs, designed to provide fixed fee, fixed timeframe processes to help modern companies quickly prototype their digital/customer experience transformation.

Tasked with creating the 3.0 version of the Deutsch NYC with the CEO, CTO and soon to be hired CCO after long gaps in leadership, declining revenues, and poor margins. My vision was to diversify and strengthen the strategic offering to better serve clients, building a strategic consulting offering alongside traditional, digital and social strategy services. Key wins: ABI innovation, project was called “gold standard” leading to AOR for Busch and Shock Top. Won Charter, booking.com, and global site build for Acuvue. Strategy department landed 750k project with Fox Studios to design a strategic software platform to manage film development workflow. Worked with CTO to increase digital billings by over 2 million.

Invited to be CSO after helping convert Adidas Originals from a project to a global AOR. Helped lead the executive team, build a strategy department and scale the agency. Led a complete brand strategy and positioning for Adidas Originals, it’s first in 30 years. Built a three-year campaign platform for Originals ending year three with a grand prix at Cannes in 2019. To help scale, led the process to develop the agencies vision and mission for the first time in seven years. Led creation of new agency vision and plan: three-year goals/growth plan, creative/cultural agency principles, process and infrastructure. Designed a new organizational structure for the agency to better service clients and develop talent. Authored new review and evaluation process.

Master & Dynamic

Founding partner of this luxury audio brand, available in Apple stores worldwide. Consulted for 6 months and became equity holder and employee number one alongside founder and CEO. Led the company vision and founding brand/product insights, positioning headphones as “the modern thinking cap”, and the company, product and brand at the intersection of sound and creativity, creating “tools for creative professionals”. Responsibilities included a blend of CCO, CMO, CSO tasks including mapping product/brand whitespace, authoring brand strategy, product architecture and pipeline, collaborating on design and product development, management of agency partners and overall creative direction. Oversaw internal creative teams, hiring, creative development and marketing. Co-directed brand film, designed the sound signature for the over-ear and in-ear headphones. Worked hand in hand with CEO, CPO, NSG SWAT, The 88 and Wondersauce to bring the brand to launch.

Acting Strategy Director at this strategy/innovation consultancy. Beat out 8 other global innovation firms to win the “future of news and information products” innovation project for Bloomberg LLC with Norman Pearlstine. Sylvain operated as the innovation agency of record for Chobani while it grew from 300 million to 1 billion, personally led a few brand and product development projects, social media strategy and the 3 year growth roadmap for the CEO, a project that encompassed all verticals from manufacturing to marketing to deliver a comprehensive growth strategy. Brought in Master & Dynamic as a client and negotiated cash plus equity for Sylvain. Developed a portfolio analysis model for JNJ CEO, filtering, plotting and prioritizing brands for investment based on their strategic position. Worked on Pepsi global cultural network initiative.

Goal was to immerse myself in a completely different culture, language and landscape to recharge and recover from burnout. Spent 6 months in West Africa. Become conversational in French, proficient in surfing, and helped a few local tourist orientated business re-organize their business models/strategies in exchange for day trips or free housing. Rode solo 5k miles through Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Ghana and back to Dakar... and lived to tell the tales. As the famous Stefan Sagemeister reveals on TED, sabbaticals can be a powerful tool when used correctly.

Ran my own consulting team with P&L responsibility. Managed entire process including lead gen, scoping, SOWs project and strategic management through invoicing with a team of 4-6 strategists. Developed a unique team culture that produced award-winning deliverables and permanently impacted company culture. Worked with Etrade on development of an online financial community to increase per/client revenue including a fully modeled business plan. Completed a project for JNJ, post DePuy hip failure, to figure out “the future of reputation management for JNJ worldwide” a reputation valued at more than $1billion. Authored a strategy that included new digital infrastructure, organizational infrastructure as well as executive training and development. Personal clients included Land Rover, Levis, Johnson & Johnson, E*Trade, Weight Watchers, Victorias Secret.

Throughout my career(s) in advertising, consulting, and working in startups, I have found that very few leaders, organizations, and brands have a clear intention of what they are really there to do. As a result, most people working at these companies, or for them, are often unclear on how to behave or contribute. When this happens, people feel disconnected from the company mission, don't know the strategy, and have a hard time marketing and building campaigns that bring the brand to life because nobody ever made more than a bible with font and logo rules.

Over time, I became obsessed with the intersection of brand and business strategy, of taking the time to work with teams through the hard questions required to be able to articulate a well-crafted plan or intention, as well as a set of rules to play by, or beliefs, that the company will adhere to and become recognized for.  

I think success is when everyone in the company can recite the elevator speech for the company's mission, articulating who they are there to serve by doing what, along with what differentiates their product and what they need to achieve in the next 3-5 years. 

I think success is when everyone knows what the company believes in, not just a list of values, but how those apply to product, service, and cultural decisions the company will make or won't make. 

I think marketing and branding success is when everyone knows what long- and short-term narratives are essential for continued success and differentiation, along with more interesting creatives.
