I don't like picking at bad cold outreach.

It's very rarely the reps fault and usually a leadership/coaching problem.

However, every once and a while I get outreach that really makes me scratch my head. 

Can anybody make sense of this? 

The first message I get it aimed at William.
Ok sure, it's a template, he forgot to change the name, it's sloppy, but it happens.

I respond, playfully saying, I'll check with William.

He replies and says "That would be so great"

I am left with a few questions like WHO IS WILLIAM!?
And why does he think I am a gatekeeper to this William person?

Is he just not paying attention?
Is it AI?
Am I going crazy?
(ok, I am but I don't think I am in THIS situation specifically) 

Help me understand this, please 😆

I hate New Year's Resolutions.

Saying "I want to get fit" is easy, it costs nothing. 
Committing is different, it requires skin in the game. 

So far I've signed up for:
2 Hyrox Series Quebec events (one singles, one doubles) 
1 HYROX doubles event in Ottawa 
1 Spartan race 

and I'd like to add a Half Marathon to that and maybe another HSQ Event to that.

The difference to me? 
"I want to get faster" is a hope. 
A race registration is a promise.

You don't need a New Year's Resolution to make a change.
You need to put your money where your mouth is. 

Stop Resolving. Start Committing.

Most founders I work with have it backwards.

They think figuring out what to say is the hard part.

So they write a “value prop”, automate the 💩 out of it and call it GTM. 

But GTM has a hierarchy of needs, just like Maslow’s.
And at the very bottom isn’t automation or AI.

It’s identity. 

Too many teams skip the most important question:
Who am I actually talking to?

If you can’t confidently answer:
“Who is this person?”
“Where do they work right now?”
“Is this actually the right person to talk to?”

Then everything above it breaks. 

That’s something that really clicked for me after adding Common Room’s Person360 to my tech stack.

One profile per person. 
Signals, enrichment, job changes → all resolved to an actual human. 

I know who my prospects are, where they actually work and what their reality is.
I get to immediately address the problems we solve for them in my outreach. 

Instead of staring at my CRM trying to figure out whether I should be talking to:

Worked independently for Dr. Adele Boskey’s laboratory. Dr. Boskey is 	interested in tissue mineralization; the ultimate goal in the lab was to improve bone quality by providing insight needed for new 	therapies and tissue engineered products. My specific research project was focused on the role of proteoglycans in the bone mineralization process. More specifically, I looked at the effect of 	the interaction between the large proteoglycan, aggrecan, and aggrecanase (ADAMTS) and aggrecanase inhibitors (TIMP) on hydroxyapatite formation in a gel system. My work was paralleled 	with identical studies performed in this laboratory in a cell culture 	system.

Over the last decade, I helped build multiple multi-million dollar medical device territories by developing new markets and strategic sales teams. I also helped customer-partners build their personal brands and land consulting contracts, which led to developing new products/techniques and enhanced patient outcomes.

Then, in 2023, I hit a fork in the road. Do I continue building someone else's company at the expense of my convictions, or do I risk my comfortable life to gain personal agency, take complete ownership over my future, and craft something worth telling a story about?

Building something on my terms and diversifying my income would be the best pathway towards control over my calendar, autonomy over the work I get to do, and the direct impact I can have.

It's not your fault that you aren't getting promoted.

Companies love to promote the wrong people: 

People with seniority, big numbers, and loud mouths. 

But don't let that stop you from getting promoted the right way.

Promotion the right way is simple.
It's not about being extraordinary. 
Nor is it about being high performing. 

It's about being a high-impact person. 

High-impact people don't chase what others chase:

🏷 Executive titles
🏢 The corner office
👏 Praise and recognition
🎓 Fancy MBA degrees

High-impact people are simply leaders without titles. 

Lead where you are. 

No hierarchy.
No entitlement.
No permission needed.

✅ Seek impact, not impressions.
✅ Take initiative when others are complacent.
✅ Pursue excellence when no one's watching.
✅ Lift morale when others stick to themselves.

The gap between insignificance and influence shouldn't be authority.

It's the choice to become the leader you wish you had.

Stop faking you are a "team player" just to get promoted.

That was my biggest mistake I made in my 17 years of building an influential sales career:

Not being generous.
Not monetarily, that's easy.
But sacrificial with everything else.

Now, I give away my:

- Strengths & skills to develop others
- Time in the trenches with our reps
- Ideas to improve our organization

Giving binds people into a community.

True leaders don't give to get but to inspire others to bring their best efforts to this world in accomplishing good things that bless others. 

What steps can you take to advance the world around you?

Most people wait for the perfect opportunity to start leading.

The perfect promotion.
The right work/life balance. 
The sales kickoff meeting.
A bigger team.

But here’s what I’ve learned after building sales teams:

There is no perfect opportunity.

The promotion won't make you a leader.
There is no such thing as work/life balance in sales leadership.
Leadership happens before the title. 

The people who get promoted don't wait. 

They start.
They lead anybody.
Create opportunities to serve. 
They find solutions that everyone has been aching for. 

Because they understand something most people ignore:

You don’t build influence by a title. 
You earn it by leading. 

Serving builds trust.
Solving problems makes you indispensable.

That’s exactly how I've gone from a sales demotion to now running my own sales organization.

Not with a perfect plan.

But by showing up every day seeking to enrich the lives of others.

The best sales leaders don't obsess over numbers. 

They obsess over people (and their growth). 

Here's a simple playbook for developing your people: 

> Invest in everyone, not just top performers.
> Be the leader you wished you had.
> Know your people's strengths & weaknesses (personal SWOT).
> Create an actionable development plan that results in better paychecks.
> Become a broken record with the company's mission, values, and vision.
> Connect the people's "why" with the company's purpose.
> Coach, don't command.
> Delegate to grow people, not just clear your plate.
> Lead from the trenches with daily rep face time.
> Make 1:1s sacred (& follow through).
> Celebrate effort, not just results.

The math is simple:
Better people = better culture = better results. 

Choose people over profit because people matter more. The byproduct? They generate profit. 

What are your favorite methods for developing people?

Instead of making new goals for 2026, quit goals. 

Dan Koe recently said people should "quit more goals than they set because how else are you going to narrow in on the correct goals." 

So what were your 2025 goals you didn't achieve? 

True success isn't trying to achieve them in 2026, but maybe scratching them so you can focus on what truly matters. 

What about some decade long goals you've had? 

Time to toss them. 

Failure is not succeeding at things that don't matter. 

Some of your clingy goals and dreams may be keeping you from more meaningful goals you need to focus on. 

But you can't focus if you don't remove. 

Addition by subtraction. 

What goals are you quitting this new year?

If you want to get promoted in 2026, stop acting like your boss and start acting like a true leader. 

Know the differences between a sales boss and a true leader (and how to apply these now to earn a promotion):

1 - Stop criticizing teammates and start praising

🚫 Bosses criticize in public and praise in private. 
☑️ True leaders do the inverse. 
✅ So train yourself to see the good in others and encourage and praise them.

2 - Be an example worth following

🚫 Sales bosses drag their people across the finish line
☑️ Sales leaders inspire their people to success by showing them the way. 
✅ Master the basics of your sales job and help elevate your teammates. 

3 - Own your development

🚫 Sales bosses dictate plans. 
☑️ True leaders develop people. 
✅ Take ownership of your role. Don't have SOPs on what's expected? 
- Ask what's expected of you. 
- Create your own SOPs. 
- Don't wait for instructions. 

4 - Embrace an owner's mentality

🚫 Sales bosses are ruthless taskmasters. 
☑️ Whereas leaders care about outcomes. 
✅ If you want to get promoted, stop asking what you should do next. 
Start asking what results are desired, create a game plan, and execute. 

5 - Trust their team

🚫 Bosses withhold trust
☑️ Leaders give it upfront with guardrails.
✅ I know many sales professionals who withhold information because they want to keep their cards tight to their chest. It never works out in their favor. 
Learn to trust and to give trust. 

6 - Fall on your sword

🚫 Bosses and toxic performers blame everyone else but themselves. 
☑️ Leaders own up to their mistakes. 
✅ The aspiring leader admits defeat, failure, or when they mess up. 

7 - Design how you win

🚫 Bosses demand results but give no instructions on how 
☑️ Leaders design a clear path to winning
✅ If you want to get promoted and have no design on how to win, propose scorecards, create your own, and ask for accountability from your manager. 

8 - Build systems

🚫 Bosses are chaotic and sporadic at best
☑️ Leaders win consistently because they have systems
✅ Design a system with high-revenue habits that help you win consistently. For me, it was my quarterly planning, my weekly plan, my daily system of preparation and follow-up. 

9 - Rely on Reality
🚫 Bosses solely lead reactively on their gut
☑️ The best leaders lean into the data for decisions. 
✅ Aspiring sales leaders, be consistent with your CRM and create impactful dashboards that tell you the truth and show you where your best effort should be spent. 

10 - Communicate thoughtfully

🚫 Bosses don't think before they speak
✅ True leaders use their words wisely. 

11 - Be cool under pressure 

🚫 Bosses create more chaos under pressure.
☑️ The best leaders bring clarity in the midst of chaos. 
✅ Be aware of how you respond to pressure and learn how to grow from it. 
- Make contingency plans before the storm hits. 
- When the storm hits, pause, think, and react. 

Which one has worked the best for you?

Leadership will affect your well-being more than your doctor ever will.

99% of people overcomplicate career moves.

So, in 2023, I simplified the riskiest career decision of my life. 

I left a proven company and 14 14-year career for an uncertain one. 

Risky, but simple. Here's how. 

What they won't teach you in school or corporate America is that all you need is:

1. Direction - where do you want to go in life? 
2. Anti-goals - what are you not willing to give up?
3. Convictions - Why and what must you do no matter what?
4. People - whom do you have as your personal board of advisors?

Things you don't need:

1. To listen to your heart.
2. 5 & 10-year plans.
3. Large network.

The key is to decide on your career before you need to choose. 

And no matter what, be excellent and intentional. 

Because none of this matters if you suck at your work.

What would you add to this career decision framework?

The best way to avoid hitting quota is to plan everything before you start. 

After 18 years of sales, I have learned this the hard way (and a simple fix). 

I'm OCD about having a meticulous sales strategy. 
It has overcome my deficiency in selling skills. 
But it has also paralyzed me. 

So many times, I could've achieved my sales goals so much sooner if it weren't for my overplanning. 

Here's why:

1) Hyper planning is a dopamine hit

It feels like progress, but you haven't moved. 

2) Analysis paralysis is a real thing

Overplanning creates lots of options and freezes your brain when it attempts to take action. 

3) You don't train a bias for action 

You train your brain not to get into the habit of taking action. 

Learn from me, who often gets stuck in the planning phase.

Instead, try this simple fix:

✅ Calculate your ideal revenue goal
- How much money do you want to make this year? 
- Making it personal helps you take more ownership. 
- Just ensure it is aligned with company and team goals

✅ Identify the top opportunities that are right in front of you
- Create an opportunity Eisenhower matrix
- List the top 3 most important opportunities in your high-volume customers (existing business) with High opportunity (more room for growth)
 - Second, find your top 3 low-volume opps with high opportunity (with HOT leads). 

✅ Take the next best step

- Identify the next best step for each opportunity
- And execute. 

You are your worst nightmare. 
Not your boss.
Not the culture you're in.
Not your lack of opportunity. 
You. 

So train yourself to master yourself. 

What's a quick fix you would add to help someone overcome overplanning?

Your company will never fully develop your leadership potential. They can't.

Their model only works if you stay productive in your current role — not preparing for your next one.

A great way to close that gap is to develop yourself.

1. Start with WHY you want to lead.

Leadership is about taking people on a mission towards a better future.

2. Align your work, sales pitch, and company mission to your purpose.

Your why inspires passion, but alignment maintains it.

3. Turn on the lights.

Spotlight everyone's shared problem, inspire hope with those who want to fix it, and fix it together.

4. Build a tribe of mentors.

Find one mentor in your organization, 3 mentors outside your org but within your industry, and 5 models you can read that inspire you.

5. Do generous work that makes your colleagues more successful.

Build a reputation as someone who creates value for others, not just climbs ladders.

Stop waiting for your company to prepare you for what's next.

Develop yourself.

What else would you add?

You don't need permission to lead.
You don't need to work 60-hour weeks.
You don't need approval to implement AI.

Don't let anybody tell you otherwise. 

The biggest lies we tell ourselves:

"I need to wait until the culture improves."
"I need to be promoted before I can lead."
"I need to stay in my lane.

Here's the truth:

You have everything you need to make change happen in your company.
The work isn't waiting for permission.
The work is taking responsibility.

How many people do you know who spent years taking orders instead of taking initiative?

The most successful people didn't wait to lead and do great work.

They had a vision.
They took small bets.
They chose to lead and make a change.

Stop waiting to get picked.

Pick yourself and make positive change happen.

Here's a litmus test for servant-leadership:

Taking - peaceful - time off. 

Where you make it all about your family.

Not yourself. 

Time off exposes how selfish I am. 

I used to think time off was about ME taking time away from work. 

It's not.

It's about me investing in new memories with my family.

Memories that will last a lifetime. 

And memory-making requires work. 

Selfless work. 

The best kind of work. 

I know most people don't take much time off. 

Shame on them. 

Your family needs it.

They need your undivided attention. 

Seasons come and go; I get it. 
And, sadly, Christmas comes and goes as well. 

But there's always a season for slowing down and enjoying. Especially Christmas time... even if you are in your EOY grind to get across the finish line. 

Each year, I improve. 

I set my selfish expectations aside. 

And go ready to serve, not to be served. 

How do you balance time off during the holidays with finishing your year well?

The best leaders enjoy giving joy. 

Christmas reminds me of the biggest mistake I made in my 17 years of building an influential sales career:

Not being a cheerful giver. 
And not just monetarily. 
But cheerfully giving away things that bring others joy. 

Leadership is about giving away your: 
- Gratitude to your team
- Praise of your people's efforts
- Expertise to customers with zero strings attached
- Strengths & skills to develop others
- Time in the trenches with your people
- Ideas to accelerate careers

Simon Sinek said it well:

"Givers advance the world. Takers advance themselves and hold the world back." 

And Christmas is just about that: 

The birth of the ultimate leader, the Lord Jesus Christ, who joyfully gave the impossible to advance not himself, but the lives of all who would believe: 

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though being rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich." (2 Cor. 8:9)

Merry Christmas!

The best way to sell more is to stop worrying about quota. 

Start focusing on these 17 sales habits:

1. Focus on what you can control: your attitude & actions
2. Learn to say, "I don't know, but let me find out." 
3. Give, don't take. Give away your time, expertise, & self. 
4. The day starts the night before. Wake up to execute. 
5. Practice patience, not passivity. Growth takes time. 
6. Like Navy Seals, train with a pod of peers. 
7. Sundays are for strategy. Plan an ideal week.
8. Get aligned every quarter with your values and mission
9. Always be checking in on your character. 
10. Do what you say you will do, even if it costs you. 
11. First impressions are for impact, not to impress. 
12. Time block high-revenue activities. Ruthlessly stick to it
13. Send a weekly highlight report to your boss. 
14. Send a weekly lessons learned report to your team. 
15. End each day with a self-assessment review of yourself.
16. Solve big problems instead of reacting to fire drills. 
17. Go beyond the transaction and seek to enrich lives.

Stop trying to hit quota once. 

Start putting it on self-driving mode by implementing systems. 

James Clear says, "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." 

Systematic selling reduces anxiety and stress. 

Habits and systems help you win over and over again. 

What habits would you add?

A business phrase that gets under my skin:

"It's not personal, it's just business."

Business is not just business. 

Business is personal. 

Every deal, negotiation, & transaction has a person behind it. 

"Shrewd" businesspeople or bad bosses will seek to win at people's expense. 

True leaders generate value for their people. 

When starting a business, career, or a new role, stop asking how it will benefit you.

Start asking how you can benefit and serve others. 

Nothing wrong with wanting to make money and provide for your family. 

Nothing wrong with doing things you are passionate about or good at. 

But people can feel it when you're in it for yourself.

People can smell commission breath from a mile away. 

People first, then profit. 

Business is not just business. Business is personal when you deal with people. 

Make someone's day by tagging someone who exemplifies 'people first' leadership.

The wrong path looks promising. 

Until you are replaced. 

I used to think success came from putting in the most hours.

→ First in. Last one out.
→ Say yes to every opportunity.
→ Take work off your boss's plate. 

The formula they sold us:
Be everywhere → Pay your dues → Trust the process

But here's the problem:

Budget cuts happen.
Burnout persists.
And no one is looking after your career. 
One bad performance can make you replaceable. 

Now I focus on building what can't be replaced:

1. Your Attitude
You can't control every outcome.
But you can control whether people want you in the room when things get tough.

2. Your Wisdom
Thanks to ChatGPT, Knowledge is cheap these days.
But applying that knowledge? That's hard-earned. 
Wisdom comes only from personal experience and reflection.

3. Your EQ Skills
Tools change. Markets shift.
But people don't. The ability to communicate and win with people will outlast AI. 

4. Your Character
Character can't be bought. 
It is developed and tested over time. 
While others focus on competencies and credentials, build the foundation that no one else has. 

5. Your Discipline
Motivation can pack a punch, but it has a short fuse. 
Discipline keeps your butt in the chair no matter how you feel. 


6. Your Leadership
Leadership isn't a title.
It's creating opportunities to initiate acts of service.

7. Your Point of View
A unique, well-reasoned perspective is a moat.
It sets you apart in a world drowning in copycats.

These 7 things made me indispensable.
No org chart. No market shift. No competitor can take them away.

You don't need to protect yourself.
You need to build value that no one can replace.
