In the early 2000s,  my focus was on growing my skills, climbing the ladder, and being where I needed to be to get the job done. 

In 2009, I burned out hard. 

My new plan was to work for equity in tech start-ups and become financially independent.

Swing and Miss, the first start-up company I chose to work for, was going nowhere (equity worth zero). 

What happened? Did I screw up everything?

I chose the company because I was passionate about its mission, but I had not examined it further. I had no real plan.

My next step was to call people that I knew had been successful in working for equity in tech and see what was different in their "playbook."

April 19th, 2012 Splunk had a break-out IPO

April 20th, 2012 feelings of anxiety and fear creep in about how to manage the newly generated wealth. 

I had to figure out how to get real income (real estate) into my portfolio. I needed something sending me checks.

Key lessons learned after the first IPO:
 -How to invest in private equity real estate
 -Set up my family for generational wealth
 -Own the result (don't put my future in someone else's hands)

I climbed the ladder to become a CIO.

"I wish I could retire."

I hear this all the time from people with $3M-$5M-$7M portfolios.

They're brilliant at building wealth.

But they feel trapped in their jobs.

Here's what they don't realize:

The result? $200K+ annually in tax-efficient cashflow.

It's not a secret method.

➤ That means 52% is locked in their primary residence.
➤ This doesn't generate the cashflow needed to replace a paycheck.

50% of your net worth in company stock isn't a strategy.

The part of trading that makes you money is the part that makes you want to quit.

I post a lot of the exciting stuff.

The screenshots from clients who message me saying "I just made $4,000 in 10 minutes." 

It's fun to post and fun to read and gets a lot of likes, but what you don't see from these students is days 47, 119, and 335 where they didn't have anything to send me. 

The huge results are maybe 5% of what happens

The other 95% is sitting there doing nothing. 

If you're doing it right, you're spending a ton of time just waiting and watching a setup that isn't quite right and not taking it. 

Then, you close your laptop at 10am because there's nothing to do. 

You might break even for a week straight and remind yourself that's actually a win.

That's the work.

And it feels like absolutely nothing is happening. Your brain is screaming at you to do something, but the traders who make it are the ones who can sit in that boredom and not get all antsy and force a trade. 

That's half the skill... Just the ability to be bored and not do something stupid.

I spent 35 years in Corporate America thinking hard work meant being busy. 

Trading taught me the opposite.

The worst thing you can do with $3,000 is nothing. 

The second worst is starting a business.

Everyone tells you to become an entrepreneur, but they don't tell you that starting an actual business means you need $100,000 in the bank just to give yourself a fighting chance.

Trading is the opposite. It has low barriers to entry. 

You can start with $500.

The capital requirement isn't what stops people.

What stops people is they overextend themselves from day one. 

They don't ask the most important question before they start: 

How much can I actually begin with?

Not how much do I want to make or how much did that guy on YouTube say he made, but how much can I realistically start with and learn without blowing up my finances?

That's the difference between trading as a skill and trading as a lottery ticket.
