In the early 2000s,  my focus was on growing my skills, climbing the ladder, and being where I needed to be to get the job done. 

In 2009, I burned out hard. 

My new plan was to work for equity in tech start-ups and become financially independent.

Swing and Miss, the first start-up company I chose to work for, was going nowhere (equity worth zero). 

What happened? Did I screw up everything?

I chose the company because I was passionate about its mission, but I had not examined it further. I had no real plan.

My next step was to call people that I knew had been successful in working for equity in tech and see what was different in their "playbook."

May 2011, Started at Splunk Pre-IPO

April 19th, 2012 Splunk had a break-out IPO

April 20th, 2012 feelings of anxiety and fear creep in about how to manage the newly generated wealth. 

I had to figure out how to get real income (real estate) into my portfolio. I needed something sending me checks.

Key lessons learned after the first IPO:
 -How to invest in private equity real estate
 -Set up my family for generational wealth
 -Own the result (don't put my future in someone else's hands)

New Mission: Be the Founder of a Micro Family Office to become Financially Independent.

I climbed the ladder to become a CIO. 

At the peak, I realized I wanted to build my DIY Family Office more than climb the ladder.

I changed roles and reduced my scope. 

On August 26, 2022, I graduated from my W-2 job to live a lifestyle by design.

I founded WealthOps in 2023 to equip technology professionals with the skills to build and run their portfolios.

I built my own family office from scratch.

Here's how.

I didn't need $100M in assets.

Most wealthy families have 1-2 of these components partially in place. 

Maybe a financial advisor (Advisory Partners). 

Maybe a basic portfolio (Structure). 

But without all 7 working together, you're running a business with missing departments.

The families who get this right don't outperform because they pick better stocks. 

They outperform because they run better operations.

The 7 components of a Micro Family Office.

You crossed $2M in investable assets.

Your wealth level changed but your wealth mgmt approach didn't.

At $250K, a retail brokerage and a traditional advisor made sense... the tools fit the job.

At $2M+, concentration is the threat. Income is the goal. But a portfolio still sitting 80% in public markets isn't built for either.

Here's what the top 0.1% actually hold:

28% real estate.
28% private equity.
23% public stocks.

This isn't a knowledge problem about which investments to buy.

It's a foundation problem.

Before you can shift your allocation toward income-generating assets at any meaningful scale, three things MUST exist:

𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀. Private equity deals don't wait. A good operator opens a fund once every few years. The window is short. Without a written document that defines what a yes looks like before the pitch starts, you make decisions under pressure — and expensive mistakes follow.

𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. What percentage goes to each asset class? How much can be illiquid at any given time? Without written allocation targets, you can end up 80% concentrated in a single category without ever making a single bad individual decision.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Your assets need legal separation from your personal finances. Without it, a bad outcome in one investment can threaten everything else you own. A properly structured Holding Company creates that wall. But only if the books match the entity. Commingled accounts mean a court can pierce the structure entirely.

The TIGER 21 portfolio allocation you see in the graphic isn't the starting point.

It's what you build toward AFTER the foundation exists.

Your advisor taught you to build a grain silo, while the wealthy built orchards.

Here's what most wealth-building advice produces:

You work for 30 years. 
You accumulate assets. 
You build a big number on the screen.

Then in retirement, you start drawing it down.

Living expenses come out of the pile. 
Advisor fees come out of the pile. 

Every year, you chip away at what it took decades to build.

And hope it outlasts you.

That's the Drawdown Portfolio. 

It works exactly like a grain silo: fill it up, then drain it.

Now here's what the wealthy actually do.

They don't build silos. 

They plant orchards.

The Evergreen Portfolio generates income through things like REITs, dividends, real estate, private credit, covered calls, and syndications. 

These assets produce yield 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 liquidating principal.

You harvest the fruit. 
You reinvest a portion. 
The tree continues to grow.

Distributions come from yield, not from selling assets. 

The portfolio isn't depleting. It's compounding.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁.

Here's why some advisors never show you this model:

The Evergreen Portfolio has 3 pillars:

- Growth Assets
- Income Assets
- Preservation Assets

But income-generating assets don't generate AUM fees.

Follow the money. 

If they can't earn a fee on the strategy, the strategy doesn't get recommended.

This isn't cynicism. 
It's incentive alignment. 

The Micro Family Office is built on the Evergreen model.

You architect income-generating assets. 

You distribute from what the orchard produces, not from what you spent decades growing.

That's the difference between a portfolio that runs out and a portfolio that gets passed down from generation to generation.

What stands out to you most in this data the Fed released last month?

You can't steer a car by looking in the rearview mirror.

But that's how most high-net-worth people manage their taxes.

Tax filing is backward-looking.

It records what happened.

Tax strategy is forward-looking.

It plans what will happen. 

One is compliance. The other is optimization.

Most CPAs are trained for compliance. 

They're excellent at it. 

But compliance is not strategy.

Strategy requires a different professional. 

Such as a Certified Tax Planner.

The window for tax strategy closes long before your CPA sends you a summary.

This is why two people with identical incomes can pay radically different tax bills. 

One is filing. The other is steering the ship.

The Fed tracks the wealth composition of Americans every few years.

Here's what the most recent data shows across the top three tiers.

Total Net Worth: $1.6M
Investable Net Worth: $842K
Real estate: 59% of portfolio
Business equity: 9% of portfolio

𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟱%
Total Net Worth: $3.8M
Investable Net Worth: $2.0M
Real estate: 59% of portfolio
Business equity: 9% of portfolio

I found it interesting that the top 10% and top 5% have nearly identical portfolio compositions.

More assets but same composition.

But the top 1% looks different. 
Real estate drops from 59% to 23%. 
Business equity jumps from 9% to 41%. 

And the gap between TNW and INW narrows significantly.

Whether that composition causes the wealth gap, or results from it, the data doesn't say.

But the difference is there.

Projected IRR is the last thing I look at in a private deal.

Structure is the first.

Not the marketing deck.
Not the polished underwriting model.
Not the headline returns.

Structure determines:

1. Who gets paid first
2. How risk is shared
3. What happens when things don’t go perfectly
4. How cash flow is distributed
5. How upside is split

Returns matter.

But structure determines whether those returns are actually achievable.
