🎵 I wish  #NFTs existed 10 - 15 years ago.

I have practically been a music nerd for all my life. 

I used to play in various bands and as a solo artist as well as worked for record labels, organized festivals & managed up and coming artists.

I consider this experience very precious and am thankful for the opportunities I received.

I got to play in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard and toured the entire US.

Ranked up over half a million plays on Myspace (Yes, Myspace did exist back then)

Got featured in the biggest Rock/ Metal magazine in China.

And was on German TV.

Why am I telling you this?

It sounds like that could pay the bills right?

It didn't. AT ALL. It was a +- business.

Independent artists without much representation have it hard. 

Music piracy did not help at the beginning of the century.

And the model of streaming pays independent artists unfairly.

Along came COVID and seriously threatened live music and musicians.

Music NFTs taking off (in the next few years) feels like a resurrection for the music industry to me.
 
🎸 For independent artists NFTs could provide an opportunity to connect with fans in unique ways.

NFTs are not a get-rich-quick scheme, it needs work, but it could enable artists to make a better living than now.

You don't need millions of streams on Spotify, but maybe only a few hundred devoted fans that invest in your journey and see you grow.

💿 Record labels, publishing agencies & more can use NFTs to offer new experiences to music lovers.
At the same time creating new income streams could also mean that more investments go into up and coming artists long-term.

It puts a little bit of the power back into the hands of the music industry.

I've seen artists disappear over the years because they ran out of fuel at some point (financial wise).

Wouldn't it be great to experience live music and at the same time know that the artists performing can provide for themselves and their family?

I spent a few years traveling the world, interviewing people like David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, U2,  Barry White, David Lynch and Daniel Day Lewis.

After getting way with this charade I became a music manager, having crossed paths (and sometimes swords) with the biggest and baddest, from Bruce Allen (Bryan Adams, Michael Buble) to Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin) to Malcolm McLaren (The Sex Pistols) to the notorious Irving Azoff (The Eagles), about whom his client Don Henley once said: "He may be the devil, but he's our devil." I'd seen the titans up close and thought "How hard can that be?" Ha.

I managed a win with soul/R&B artist Remy Shand, signing him to a big record deal, with Motown/Universal, and executive produced his only album "The Way I Feel," which won a Juno Award and went platinum in Canada, garnered four Grammy nominations in America, and got a lot of love in Europe and Japan. 

For my next act, I created and produced a deliberately eclectic music television series, "Spectacle: Elvis Costello with..." shot at the 30 Rock/Saturday Night Live studio and the Apollo Theatre in NYC. The versatile Mr. Costello hosted, and our guests included such up-and-comers as Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Bono and The Edge, The Police and Norah Jones.  Spectacle made many year-end Top 10 TV lists (Time Magazine, New York Times) and was reviewed as "perhaps the best show about music ever made."

Last few years: Wrote a newspaper column on media and politics; returned to school; read behavioral economics; developed a feature film; and worked on new projects for TV, audio, and digital. Also learned a little about tech. And I do mean a little.
