Every Thanksgiving someone hits you with the classic:
“So… what do you actually do?”

If you’re a Go-To-Market Engineer, you already know this is where the mental gymnastics begin.

So this year, here are a few holiday-approved ways to describe our job without watching Auntie {insert name} eyes glaze over:

1. The “Simple Dinner Table” version:

 “I help companies talk to the right people… instead of emailing the same wrong people 14 times.” (Yes, this actually happens.)

2. The ‘no follow-up questions please’ version:

“I make sales tools behave the way everyone confidently assumes they already do.” (They absolutely do not.)

3. The “Tech-curious cousin who thinks you code” version:

 “I build automations that find the best leads, score them, route them… basically everything except closing the deal myself.” (Though sometimes it feels like I do that too.)

4. The “Grandma wants something to brag about” version:

“I build the GPS that helps companies know where to go and who to talk to so they don’t get lost on the way to revenue.” (They get lost anyway.)

5. The “Be honest about your daily chaos” version:

 “I untangle broken CRMs, fix things nobody admits they broke, and automate tasks everyone swears they ‘totally did already.’” (They did not.)

6. The “Truth after your third plate of turkey” version:

 “I spend my days making sure data isn’t lying, tools aren’t fighting, and reps aren’t blaming the wrong thing.” (Spoiler: they’re still blaming the wrong thing.)

7. The “Tell them just enough to move on to dessert” version:

 “I build the workflows that make sure sales and marketing stop yelling at each other.” (Well… mostly.)

9. The “My job in one sentence” version:

“I make revenue happen faster by making chaos make sense.” (It’s a lifestyle.)

don’t apply for gtme roles.  prospect them. 
open to work might fly for some roles.
for a gtme, it’s almost a red flag.

because if your job is literally about:
lead generation
routing
automation
and outbound systems…

and your strategy to land the role is:
submit application and hope

you’re already misaligned with the role.
the gtme path is show, don’t tell. 

don’t tell me you can build workflows.
don’t tell me you know automations.
don’t tell me you understand outbound.

show me the system you built to find the role.
because that is the job.

if you’re serious about becoming a gtme, you should already know how to:

• identify every company hiring for gtme
• map the hiring manager and revops leaders
• design outbound to reach them
• log outcomes
• iterate in real time

the same way you’d do it for a client.
before my interview, I already had:

real Clay workflows, pushing data into my own HubSpot in real time
actual SOPs documented
real outputs to share

not hypotheticals. not mockups. not “i would”. 

working systems.

this role is already six figures and still climbing.
the bar isn’t going to get lower.

and the future gtmes who win won’t be the ones with the best resumes.
they’ll be the ones who treated getting the role like their first production build.

don’t apply like a candidate.
prospect like a gtme.

tables > titles
builds > bios
systems > statements

hot take for anyone trying to break into GTM Engineering…


the tools aren’t the moat.
the thinking is.

I get it… when you’re starting out, it feels like you need to master every feature in Clay before you’re “ready.”

but here’s what I’ve learned building this stuff every day:

GTMEs don’t get hired to know tools.
they get hired to solve problems.

messy data ➡️ clean signals
signals ➡️ scoring and prioritization
prioritization ➡️ actions sales actually takes
that’s the job. and it exists before the tool… and outlives it.

so if you’re early in your GTME journey:
learn the tools. yes.
but don’t stop there.
ask yourself:

✅ can I build this end to end?
✅ can I ship it, not just describe it?
✅ can I figure out the next tool when this one changes?

that’s what compounds.
still learning this myself.
just sharing what’s helped me so far.
