The role demanded strict adherence to procedures, precise technical documentation, and consistent systems discipline. I’ve always been drawn to how things connect — systems, processes, people, and the ideas that keep them moving.

I began my career in the U.S. Navy as a Nuclear Electrician’s Mate, where I learned to work with high-reliability systems, uncompromising standards, and the kind of discipline that only comes from environments where mistakes aren’t optional. That foundation shaped how I approach technical work and responsibility today.

After the Navy (and a lot of subsequent schooling in physics and engineering), I continued building my career in complex transportation and engineering environments. I moved into hands-on electrical systems work in passenger rail operations and later took on roles in commissioning and systems integration.

Today, I work in multi-stakeholder project coordination and technical review for rail fleet programs while also co-owning School of Rock Salt Lake City, where I manage daily operations, program development, and community engagement. Operating a business alongside a technical career has sharpened my ability to understand people, prioritize decisions, and stay accountable for outcomes.

Earning my Professional Engineer (PE) license has deepened my sense of accountability, not just to technical standards, but also to the people and systems those standards serve.

My goal is to continue bridging the gap between engineering precision and people-centered management, and to grow into a leader who brings clarity, empathy, and structure to complex environments.

Big milestone today.
I officially earned my Professional Engineer (PE) license.

It’s been a long road getting here,
and for a while, I’d given up on the idea.
I thought it wasn’t meant to be.

Between the strict requirements, full-time work, starting a business,
and finding my footing again after a few career detours,
it more often than not felt out of reach.

But every setback became part of the process.
Every late night.
Every moment of self-doubt.
Every small win that eventually added up to something that mattered.

Engineering, for me, has always been about connection and trust.
Earning my PE has deepened that sense of accountability.
It’s not just about technical precision.
It’s about integrity, clarity, and the impact behind every decision.

I’m proud of how far I’ve come,
and excited (and grateful) to continue learning to lead.

My daughter was born last week,
and it’s made me reflect on what
my other two kids have already taught me.

Lessons about patience and presence.
Lessons about slowing down in a fast world.

The truth is, my kids have taught me 
more about leadership than
any course or title ever could.

Being a parent requires sacrifice,
the kind that asks you to put others first,
not once, but every single day.

And I’ve learned that real leadership is similar.
Long-term outcomes are built on quiet, consistent sacrifices
that no one sees except the people you’re showing up for.

With another little one joining us,
I’m reminded that learning to lead
starts and ends at home.

Something I’ve been noticing:

A lot of stress in projects comes from assumptions rather than disagreements.

When expectations are clear, work feels lighter.
When expectations are vague, even small tasks feel heavy.

Clarity isn’t flashy, but it changes everything.

Sometimes, people get under your skin.

They miss details.
They give pushback.
They don't listen.
They don't follow through.
They make poor decisions.

And the natural instinct is ALWAYS to react.

But good leadership is the opposite of reaction. 

It's the ability to slow down instinct:
the power to overcome the moment,
setting the tone for everything else.

Not because you’re above it,
but because you’re responsible for it.

It's not about control of others.
It’s about control of yourself.

How do you slow yourself down before reacting?

Lately, I’ve been reflecting a lot on what it means to lead. 
Not in a title sense, but in the everyday sense. 

How you respond when things get messy. 
How you communicate when you’re frustrated.
How you balance systems, people, and expectations 
when all three pull you in different directions. 

Those are the moments that shape your leadership style 
and mold the culture around you.

Most people describe 'growing an agency' as serious but fun. Some weeks, I feel otherwise.

Every week at OneDraft, we have our internal catch-up call. And my updates sound a lot like last week:

- Still waiting on responses
- Writing samples, sending follow-ups

The question I get: "How's the pipeline looking?" You can guess my answer. 

Then I open LinkedIn and see peers hitting numbers. Revenue graphs that look like hockey sticks. It motivates me.

And then immediately makes me question everything.

In October alone, we have sent 500+ hyper-personalized cold emails, 1,000+ LinkedIn DMs, and 50+ calls, and it still feels like we're pushing a boulder uphill.

Last week, I was ready to throw a pity party.

But then I hopped on a call with one of our clients, a current YC founder.

I’m complaining about open rates. He’s awake at 3 AM fixing a critical bug, preparing for Demo Day, and pitching investors who just told him his baby is broken.

In between raising funds, developing the product, and hearing "no" from VCs, they don't have time to look at revenue graphs. 

They just have to make the product work.

And I realize my story is the "easy" one. Everyone's playing a different game on a different timeline.

My "slow month" is someone's dream traction. 
Their "flat revenue" is someone else's impossible goal.

And so, for the love of the game, I send another cold email. Who knows?

My company was almost called "Bluetag."

Why? Because I was wearing a blue t-shirt the day I registered it.
(Yes, really. That's how seriously I took naming back then.)

A YC founder rejected us today, and here's why we still won.

At OneDraft, we write samples for founders we know are a great fit. Usually, we start with a 15-minute call to ask personal questions that help us nail their voice and vision.

This time, we skipped it. We wrote the sample based on what we could find online: their website, LinkedIn, podcast appearances, and interviews.

But this time, the feedback left us puzzled: "This is too expected. Not the angle we want our brand built around."

Our research process is usually our superpower. Clients love us for it. So we went back, did our due diligence again, and found a problem.
  
The angle the founder wanted, the unique positioning they'd built their entire company around, didn't exist anywhere online. Not on their website or other assets. 

Imagine if we couldn't find it with hours of dedicated research, how would their customers find it? 

Users aren't researchers. They're people with 100 other options, short attention spans, and zero patience for "figuring out" things. 

Don't assume your POV is understood or that your unique positioning is obvious. If you're not talking about it, no one knows about it.

Not your customers. Not your investors. 

This is why so many great companies lose to inferior competitors with better storytelling. The competitor isn't better. They're just louder about what makes them different.

Personal branding isn't optional. Your backstory needs to come from you for them to even take a hint.

You can't assume the audience understands. You have to make them understand. Repeatedly. In public. But it gave us the reminder we needed:

The best positioning in the world means nothing if it lives only in your head.

P.S.- We got the client!

A founder asked me yesterday: "I have zero LinkedIn presence. How do I start before 2026?"

Here’s how I’d do it for them:

➡️ Week 0: Foundation (because you can't skip this)
90% of founders have the same disaster: a headline that says "CEO at Company". No banner. No featured section.

So we start there. Clean headshot. Banner with social proof. Featured section with case studies. Headline that actually tells people what you do.

Is this sexy? No. Will you get leads without it? Also no.

➡️ Week 1: Getting your brain on paper.
I book 60 minutes with you. Before we talk, I prepare 20 deeply researched questions. Some hit the top of the funnel awareness. Some dig into your process. Some are designed to get you talking about problems only you can solve.

Then I hit record on Google Gemini and interview you like we're best friends catching up.

The best hack is to just let the founder go on, jump on tangents. Tell stories they think are relevant. That's where the gold is.

➡️ Week 1-2 is production mode.
I take that recording and turn it into content. Short-form posts. Long-form breakdowns. Each one speaks to a specific audience in your funnel.

And I'm going to beg you for real photos. You at your desk. Your team, the office. You looking silly because that's what actually works on LinkedIn.

Then I put everything on a Notion dashboard and ask for your feedback to know what you would change about the tone. The word choice? The vibe?

I implement it so I know how you want your brand to feel.

➡️ Weeks 1-2: Distribution (the part most people skip)
While I'm writing, you need to do two things that feel like homework but compound like crazy:

- Use your other channels, newsletter, Twitter, etc. to promote your LinkedIn
- Engage with a list of curated 15-20 accounts in your space we made who are your ICP or audience.

Every. Single. Day. It’s annoying, but it will move the needle.

➡️ Weeks 3: Outbound
While they do the homework, I am on LinkedIn search and Sales Navigator. Filtering profiles by job title, geography, and industry. Connecting with 20 new people daily who fit your ICP.

As posts go live, I'm in the comments responding. Technical questions? I compile those for you or your team.

By end of month 1, the numbers start showing up.
Impressions. New followers. Profile visits. I track it all in a simple Google Doc. Just the metrics that matter.

And here's where it gets interesting: People start checking out your profile. I filter those visitors down to only your ICP using Sales Navigator.
