Once I turned 40 I realized I wasted a lot of time chasing titles and comp packages. 

The biggest thing holding me back was I'm not wired to be an employee.

I was fortunate in my 20s to have autonomy, managing the PNL of an eight figure business and turn it around after a disgruntled manager let things fall apart on his way out. 

I managed to lead a second turnaround after that in B2B closing 6-8 figure deals. 

But once Covid hit, I got laid off and leveraged LinkedIn to break into tech. They tried to pigeon hole me in mostly just sales roles or leadership with not much authority over meaningful budget. 

After a handful of companies ran into funding issues, I did end up at a publicly traded company just to quickly realize this was not the path for me.

I wasn't going to put the company before my family and realized I needed to make a big change. I had a friend in real estate doing extraordinarily well. I quit my secure job and I went to work for commission only to learn the business.

There's been a lot of ups and downs, and since then I've launched my own real estate business, briefly a cleaning company that I sold, and now partnered back with my mentor to launch a real estate community to help those learn the same.

I am no longer money focused as my priority is building a life around being present with my wife and kids and only doing work I enjoy. 

While I don't want to be broke. I realized my family would rather have me be present physically, mentally, and emotionally over having a larger house, more stuff and even more vacations. 

It's a new path I'm walking and still learning every day and hope to help others do the same. Fortunately I realized this with my daughters being 10 and 6. Hoping to inspire others to realize the same before it's too late.

Companies hiring in December are the ones you WANT to work for.

Here’s why most reps get this backwards.
Everyone thinks December and January are “dead months” for sales.

So they wait until next year to start their hunt.
Big mistake.

The companies hiring NOW are the ones with:

	•	Aggressive growth targets
	•	Strategic thinking

They KNOW December and January are quiet.
That’s exactly why they’re hiring.
They can afford for you to ramp over the slow period…

So you hit the ground running when things pick up in February.

Now compare that to companies waiting until February to hire:

They’re cash-strapped.
They can’t afford two “down months.”
They need you productive YESTERDAY.

So what does this tell you?

Three things I would do differently if starting my career in sales now

1: I would master one tool - Clay

Clay is no longer a nice to have. It has been validated as the industry standard for GTM Automation. 

Yes other tools can do chunks of it, but there are only two reasons to use alternatives. 

An alternative might be slightly cheaper (and have all the compromises to prove it) or it might be slightly easier (and lack the capability to prove it) - either way, there is no denying Clay is just better! 

More importantly, there is a way for it to help at every stage of the sales cycle, and with companies in every revenue range. 

2: I would build my credentials in partnership development

Partnerships is the single best channel to cut through the noise we experience in GTM today. Going through an existing relationship where trust is already established is the greatest hack there is. This is only going to become more important as AI makes trusting anything harder.

3: I would spend more time honing my skills. 

I would train my skills like an athlete. Discovery, Deal Management, Negotiations. I wish I had invested in training sooner. 
Controversially, I'm starting to think I might suggest my kids don't go to university unless they want a specific profession that requires it.

Here is the thing about interviews. People act like they know. 
But there is a difference between knowing.... and knowing

Dressing in the meme, does not mean understadning it. You might assume I do, but nah.

When asked by other parents what it was all about, my explanation sounded plausible. Was it accurate? Maybe...
I knew more than them, so they believed me.

When you interview your next marketing hire. How the heck do you know if they actually know their stuff? 

You ask them their ideas... you love them
You ask them what they have done for others. You love their answer
You ask them endless questions, all sounding good 

But you will not know

But if a true marketing professional was to dive in... They would know if this person knew their stuff or not

I am assuming first marketing hires are just as unlucky as first marketing hires? 

Would I be right? 



P.S: We are turning our focus to what will be the best insurance policy in hiring history - the 30/60/90 day probation plan. A simple way to hire professionals and validate everything claimed on the box. Maybe we call it the FIFO warranty?

Sales managers need to help their team, who all have different relationships with time (Hello my fellow ADHD peeps). 

In fact, one of the hardest challenges, and certainly the most frustrating challenges most sales leaders face is getting their team to do the right work in the right time

Of the over 60 certifications that we issue, I think having leaders validate reps time management skills is one of the most impactful

We used to call 'Agile' project management "Fragile" - because most teams could not implement it correctly.

Yesterday I sent a long email to an exec and it felt dirty. I felt like I was violating an unspoken rule. 

"Dont take up my time with extra unnecesary info. Give me the executive summary"

But executive summaries are an art. They are deliberately short whislt maintain all vital information 

I chose to get this exec something quickly, rather than spending the time I would usually have better structuring it with fewer words.

As Blaise Pascal write in 1657 "I have made this longer than usual because I have not had time to make it shorter" 

Im reading a. new book (not yet launched) that I will share next week. It is all about keeping it short to cut through the noise in this busy world.
