Your premium clients aren't saying no because of price.

I was listening to a sales call the other day.

You’ve already done that. You’ve proven you can sell. You’ve built something real.

The shift

Your business was gaining momentum.

Three discovery calls on the calendar.

In 8th, we staged a “fake earthquake” and hid under our desks.
In 9th, we distracted a teacher long enough to toss a skeleton out the window.

Some teachers rolled with our infamous class of ’99. Others? Not so much.

Ever take the kind of break that tears open your humanity again?
I just took mine. 10 things I learned:

1 → The sky doesn’t fall when you put the laptop down.

2 → “Fun you” isn’t gone. She’s just buried under responsibility sometimes.

3 → Your tween can help carry the Christmas tree to the car. Bittersweet. 

4 → Watching a kid learn something in real time? Like a time-lapse of adult coaching.

5 → Conversations with friends hit different when you’re walking in the sunshine.

6 → Elf on the Shelf is weirdly perfect for starting a family-wide gratitude practice. (Steal it.)

7 → Take that kid ice skating. Marvel when you realize you’re their steady hand, calm breath, and cheerleader all at once.

8 → Our parents, aunts, and uncles are aging quickly. Ask for stories. Hug more.

9 → Make small talk with strangers. Want proof we’re all connected? There it is.

10 → When they trim the bottom of your tree? Ask them to go lower. Trust me.

I’m back now, but lighter.

But for some reason, when it’s our kids? 
We tend to launch into lecture mode (and if you’re like me, you expect them to take notes). 

They’re not little adults, though.  
Their brains are nowhere near fully developed.
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰? 𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Before age 7ish, kids need your help coming back down from overwhelm.

That’s called co-regulation, and it’s the unsung hero of parenting. 

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 “𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆?” 𝗱𝗼?: 
→ It shows you care 
→ It prioritizes your connection (a requirement for trust)
→ It helps your child reflect on what’s really going on
→ It skips the power struggle detours 

Simple? Yup. 
Easy? Not even close. 
(And that’s why I do this work.)

What keeps you up at night isn’t just logistics. It’s:

Not a pile of shoulds.
𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

So that even when things go sideways… you’ve got a way back.

Structure that works - for good.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗱 - 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

My 10-year-old had a mini meltdown at Thanksgiving.
Scavenger hunt drama.
She lost - and in her high-achieving brain, it stung.

The silent tears came. 
Her words got harsh. 
And I could 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 the side-eyes.

But I didn’t rush her.
I didn’t shush her.
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝘀.

Instead, I joined her in a quiet corner.
I said, “𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗵𝘂𝗵?”
She nodded and raised her “duh” eyebrows. 

Mumbled and grumbled. 
Took a big breath. 
Checked my vibe. (I knew the assignment: Present.)

We sat in silence.
And after folks came in, and eventually left? 
She calmed herself down.

Not because I told her to.
But because she had a safe space to 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 first.
And she'd been able to borrow my calm in her chaos.

Later, a well-meaning relative said to me:
“I probably shouldn’t have talked to her after that… 
I could tell she was just manipulating for attention.”

I took a breath.

“𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆,” I said, “𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗱. 
𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙫𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙗𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙮...

She didn’t need to be shut down or iced out.  
She needed to be heard, to borrow my calm, and to have me nearby in case coaching was needed.”

(Heck. Maybe we both learned something that day.)

My years in the classroom primed me to notice the patterns.
But putting it into words for this post? 
The clear stages floored me. 

Here’s what I watched my kid move through on the ice - 
and 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲:

1> 𝗧𝗵𝗲 “𝘄𝗵𝗼’𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴?” 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲
 → Every early fall ended in tears and a face buried in my sweatshirt.

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥: We scanned the crowd together and realized… 𝘯𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.


2> 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲
 → “Don’t fall,” she whispered, her eyes on the ice. (Is this you, too?)

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥: Replacing “don’t fall” with what she wanted her body to do. Her body listened. More gliding. Cue the awe.


3> 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗴-𝗼𝗳-𝘄𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀
 → “Why do I keep forgetting that part?!” she grunted.

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥: High-fives, silly prompts (“Show me Granny body!”), and celebrating progress and determination. 


4> 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗹𝘆-𝗯𝘂𝘁-𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲
 → A few new risks. A few stumbles. Reaching for my hand at times.

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥: Modeling trust. Reassurance. Letting her fall. Offering hugs and calm in the stumbled, zero pressure.


5> 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 
 → Less focus on getting it right. Faster rebounds. More laughter. Positive self-talk: “I’m strong!” and "I'm doing this!"

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥: Connection. Play. Being in it together. Nobody taking themselves too seriously. 


6> 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲.
 → “Can we come back next weekend?”

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥: Reflecting on what worked. Celebrating how far she came. 
And, of course, saying yes to more joy.

Watching her on the ice, I kept thinking about the adults I’ve supported these last 2.5 years - through parenting, career shifts, and big life transitions.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼...
> 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀
> 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸
> 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄

But what if we didn't make those things wrong?

What if we approached parenting (and life) with less pressure 
...and more grace?
