I've been sitting with a question lately.

We're living through a moment of unprecedented complexity. Polarization is intensifying. Climate progress is stalling. Inequity is deepening. Democracy is under pressure. Geopolitical order is fracturing. And AI is rewriting the rules faster than we can absorb them.

And yet we keep reaching for the same answers: develop more skills, build more capacity, run more programs.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵?

In the latest episode of On the Balcony, I sat down with Robert (Bob) J. Anderson and William A. (Bill) Adams — founders of the Leadership Circle  — alongside my colleague Judit Teichert.

What unfolded wasn't a presentation of a model. It was something more honest than that.

What struck me most was how openly Bob and Bill are sitting with the edges of their own thinking — decades into this work, still asking what this moment is calling for.

Bob put it plainly: 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 — 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆.

And what's emerging next isn't just a higher order of individual capability.
It's something more relational. More collective. Grounded in what Bob calls 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀.

Most leaders want improvement results. Few are willing to build the culture it takes to create them. After 27 years at Procter & Gamble and Danaher, that’s the gap I keep seeing. It starts with the CEO going to Gemba (i.e. the "real place" where value is generated for the customer). Everything else follows.

𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗘𝗢𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆.
