OK winter editions posts. Some thoughts

TLDR: Don't panic whoever you are and use Sidekick.

1. Don't panic if you're an agency - Remember when Shopify released email? And Klaviyo was dead, email agencies we're dead? Erm, yeah. The same will apply with the new features, especially around A/B testing. 

2. Don't panic if you're a tech provider with a competing service - Read the above.

3. Don't panic if you're a brand - You don't/won't need it all - take the time to test the new features out if you CAN and NEED to. Equally, ignore the stuff that's not for you right now. I.e. if your traffic is in the basement, don't start p*ssing about with testing.

4. Use Sidekick - Been playing around with Chat GPT? Feel overwhelmed with Shopify Analytics reports? Just ask Sidekick. Again, use Sidekick.

Feeling weirdly stressed this week? 

Hmm, weird eh? You are. Must be something happening....

Anyway, here's three things to do to keep feeling tip top.

1. Do a 15 minute body scan meditation - To get to sleep, to calm yourself down, in your car, on the bus, in your bed - Here's my go to - https://lnkd.in/eci_fHru

2. 10 minute lymphatic drainage - If you feel that cold coming on, groggy, or just getting to much, bust this out - https://lnkd.in/eN_xNnxd

3. Drinks - First drink water, second drink coffee, more water, more water, green tea, homemade electolyte (salt, honey, lemon, water), water, water. Put the damn energy drink down.

Had any meetings that well, we're a bit pants week? Here's one from a few years ago that Peter Gardner and I had.

So we get into the Inbox of an Marketing Director from a MAHOOOSIVE brand on Shopify. After a lot of back and forth, they setup a meeting at their Swanky offices with the CTO. 

'Oh my god man, this it, we're gonna hit the big time'

As we pulled up, we' we're wearing some of their products as the not so subtle and massively naive nod that we we're into them. Cringe.

Anyway, we get signed in and sat at in a board room. We wait ten minutes an in rushes the CTO, plus 2 developers. There's a clear tension in the air, and after the usual intro's, they say:

'So, what's this meeting about then?'

GULP.

'So the Marketing Director and I have been chatting for a while on LinkedIn and they thought that we might be helpful to you guys from a design and development perspective?'

They looked confused and even more p*ssed off.

'Look lads, i've got 30 developers sat out there, why would I need you lot?'

GULP. 

We drivelled on for another 10 or so minutes and they 'would be in touch if they needed us'. 5 years on, no call....

We took some selfies outside their office and went home with our tail firmly between our legs. 

Aside from the usual 'qualify, qualify, qualify' blah blah, just have a giggle about this if you had some cr@p ones this week.

Ok, reality check on BFCM here.

Looked at the level of discounting for some cohorts of our clients and ex-clients - all comparing 2024 vs 2025 official BFCM defined period on Shopify:

- US based clients: Increased discounting by 3.2 times 2024
- US based ex clients: Increased discounting by 5.4 times 2024
- UK based clients: Increased discounting by 2.1 times 2024
- UK based ex clients: Increased discounting by 3.9 times 2024

Revenues were up for all clients, but incorporating the discounting into the acquisition cost will put pressure on the LTV of this years BFCM buying cohort. 

See you in 12 months to see if it paid off....

Ok, past week and this week is all calls with new potential clients. 

Here's some of the gripes i've had about why they're looking at a new agency:

- "They seem more bothered about selling their software than getting us a result."
- "All the recommendations are 'vibe' recommendations."
- "The main guy know's everything but the team not so much."
- "We had projects mapped and then were told they were under-scoped so we had to pay another £2K last month."

Without sounding like David Brent, always seems to be down to communication and expectation.

Brands - what else do us Agency Folk need to do better at in 2026?

So, how did they do? No, not Villa, our clients over BFCM.

Well, i'll be spilling more of the beans on a podcast with Paul Fernandez later, I wanted to share some top line averages for brands who actively participated in BFCM 2024 and 2025. 

While all our clients had different windows for BFCM promotions, these are the native windows from Shopify analytics:

- Gross sales over BFCM ('24 vs '25): +66%
- AOV over BFCM ('24 vs '25): +10%
- Discount value over BFCM ('24 vs '25): +248%

More analysis needed to see the shape of how things went from a bottom line perspective and coming soon.
