That's a problem. Here's why & how to fix it.

Hot-ish take: We should be focused on engagement in the inbox as much (or more?) as we are on social. 

Chenell says it best in the clip below. And she's right. 
Because 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 beats getting email replies to your newsletter. 

Replies can boost: 

1) deliverability 
2) content ideas 
3) reader affinity + loyalty, and —that's right — 
4) your mental health. 

But getting newsletter replies isn't easy. 
So here are a few ways to get more replies to your newsletter:

A) Ask for a reply! (Super obvs but are you doing it?)
B) Use a pattern interrupt (Like Chenell did—check out the episode at ~17:00 where she shares what she did to get over 200 replies)
C) Elicit the 7 key emotions Shaan Puri strives for to create viral, engaging content
D) Gamify or incentivize your replies (like Toby did with "the button" and Mario did with 'The Puzzler')

𝗕𝗢𝗡𝗨𝗦: Use Katelyn's poll & giveaway strategy to incentivize replies. She uses this for clicks, but it could easily be altered to a) encourage replies and b) drive product sales!

Newsletters ≠ Email Marketing


I’m writing this because I see it way too often. These terms are often conflated. 

But doing "email marketing" does not simply equal "writing a newsletter." 

Semantics? Maybe. 
But they both can mean several things.

But I think Josh Spector put it best when he wrote:

"𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.

✅ be standalone media businesses (like podcasts, YouTube channels, newspapers, and TV shows)
✅ be key piece of a content marketing strategy
✅ leverage email marketing tactics & strategies—or not

A week later, I had more subscribers than the entire month before.

I’d looked forward to this day for a whole year.

And it was a slap in the face. Triathlon is hard. 

If you’ve been following me for a minute, you know I talk a lot about newsletters—but not during my lunch breaks. 

I spend most of my lunch hours swimming, biking, or running. 

And this past September 14th was my opportunity to put all that training to the test at the annual Cultus Lake Triathlon in Chiliwack BC: 

→ I swam (1500m)
→ biked (41.4km)
→ and ran (9.7km)

for ~53km of total distance (according to my Garmin).

Looking back on that day... I’m filled with gratitude. 
🙏 I’m grateful the weather held up.
🙏 I’m grateful I was physically able to compete (no illness or injury). 
🙏 And most of all—I’m grateful my family was there to support me. 

I'm really proud of my race, finishing 6th* out of 32 in my gender age group  — and 58th out of 333 total participants. 

This whole triathlon journey began when I turned 40 a few years back. 
But it almost never started.

Because the idea of swimming for 1500m in a lake scared the 💩 outta me (I couldn't even swim properly). 

But I wanted to challenge myself. 
And I’m so glad I did. 

Triathlon is hard. But it’s also fun. And frickin rewarding.

I can’t imagine staying in my comfort zone and missing out on this experience.

Doing hard things can be scary. Especially at first when you don’t know what you’re doing. 

But 99 times out of 100, you’ll be glad you did the hard thing.

If you're not sending THIS EMAIL with your lead magnet...

You're missing out. Jason Resnick calls it the 4-hour email.

(It works so well that Chenell even shared it in last year's 30 Days of Growth newsletter series)

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗜𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦:

1 - When someone signs up to receive your lead magnet, they get the standard welcome email with the lead magnet link.

(this is where most of us stop... but not Jason)

2 - Then 4 hours later, Jason sends a second email only if the person didn’t click the link in that first email. The second email is casual and helpful:
→ "Hey, just checking — did you get the download okay?"
→ "Sometimes it ends up buried — here’s the link again just in case."

3. Then he closes the email with a soft question to drive replies:
"What are you hoping to learn from this?" and "Where are you most stuck right now?"

Too simple? Too good to be true? 

Well I have proof this works 👇

I added the 4-hour email to one of my lead magnets and here are the stats:

→ 64.3% open rate (from those who didn’t 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸 in the first email)
→ 35.7% click rate (meaning a third of those who opened this "4-hour email" clicked to download the lead magnet—and otherwise may not have)
→ 0 unsubscribes. No reason to worry about bugging people and them unsubscribing if you do this right.

PS - I use Kit's email sequences to do this with a simple tag & filter. You can probably do this on beehive too. Not possible on Substack though.

They had 55,000 subscribers "pending" (unconfirmed).
Couldn't email them. They were stuck. 
If only they had tried this:

Dave & Marsden Kline came on the The Growth In Reverse Podcast last year and shared a shocking stat:

→ They had 55,000 unconfirmed subscribers in their ESP

That's 55,000 people they couldn't email, nudge, or message to try and get them to confirm their email address a second time. They had one shot. And missed.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝘁-𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. 
(For context, their confirmed list was 43,000 subscribers.)

So they could have had a list 2x bigger. 
2x more leads.
2x more sales.

That's a damn shame. 

And I believe it's an avoidable problem that 99% of us can avoid with ONE simple strategy. 

We call it the 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁-𝗜𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆.
And I've built a free guide for it. 

It has the safeguards of a double opt-in setting but all the benefits of single opt-in. 

The free guide walks you through, step-by-step, how to set up a False Double Opt-In (FDO) so you stop losing half of your subscribers to email purgatory (aka the 'Unconfirmed' status!)

Got one of my first "hater" email replies a few months ago. 

And not because I shared a strong opinion or bland content.

It was because of an image.
 
Not an inappropriate image. 
Or a rage-bait image.

She was upset because my welcome email imagery was "cartoonish" and "unprofessional" 🙄

(𝘚𝘶𝘣𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧)

Yep. She was 100% judging the book by its cover.

And to each their own. 

But what stood out to me was her reply saying that if my imagery was more professional, she might pay for my services. 

So am I going to change my welcome email, branding, and vibe to appease this person in the name of "professionalism"? 

Of course not. 

I actually 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 appeal to everyone—that's an apathy trap. 
Appealing to everyone is appealing to no one.

But it made me realize the importance of being yourself. Of having fun and being a little "cartoonish" — if that's what you want to be. 

And that's what I want to be. It's more fun. And if I'm having fun, I'm more stimulated. And I'll keep going. 

And most of all -- I want to filter out people like this lady who subscribes to the equation that Suit + Tie = Quality. 

I do not want to engage with people like that. 
I do not want a subscriber like that. 
And I absolutely 1000% DO NOT want to work or consult for someone like that.

Cheers to being more of yourself and less cookie-cutter, bland, and boring.

"What's the biggest opportunity for newsletters right now?"

We asked Nathan that question because he's helped HUGE newsletters grow. 

I thought he'd offer up "be the Morning Brew for X industry" or something like that. 
But he didn't.

"Tools." 

He went on to explain on our podcast:

When Figma went public in 2025, some early sales reps made $1M–$15M from stock. That's a big ship. 

Now, imagine if you had a newsletter that was entirely dedicated to Figma. Not broad graphic design tips. 

But 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 Figma: 
→ updates
→ templates
→ workflows
→ insider news
→ events

That newsletter instantly appeals to Figma users (graphic designers, front-end devs, product designers, etc). 

Companies hiring for people with those skills might be interested in reaching that audience.

Even Figma itself might take a look (affiliate & partnership potential, right??)

Attaching yourself & your content to a product like this is what Nathan calls the Barnacle Strategy:
👉 Attach yourself to a popular/fast-growing tool or platform
👉 Serve the people who use it (usually high-value professionals)
👉 Build trust + distribution → then spin off courses, communities, or even recruiting services

We’ve seen this playbook work before. Nathan shared just a few examples:
→ 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹 turned spreadsheets into a multi-million-dollar business
→ 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽 started B2C with Excel training → then landed B2B deals training analysts at Goldman Sachs
→ 𝗙𝗶𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 built a fitness industry newsletter → now running a recruiting service for gyms & wellness brands

These aren't the only people who've leveraged this strategy, obviously. But they are some very successful ones. 

Other examples:
🔢 Ben Collins runs a newsletter based all about Google Sheets.
⚫ Mike Schmitz runs a newsletter based on Obsidian. 
🐘 Stacey Harmon runs a newsletter based on Evernote.
🗓️ Many have grown newsletters around Notion and other PM tools.

Instead of trying to cover everything, what if your fastest growth lever is becoming the #1 newsletter barnacle on the next “Figma” in your space?

He launched a paid Substack newsletter

and made an estimated $50K in 3 days.

His name is Tom Orbach and he writes the Marketing Ideas newsletter.
(He's also part of the Growth In Reverse Pro Community.)

In this 13-min clip, Tom spills the beans. He tells me and Chenell 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 how he did it—including

1- his launch process (no teases or waitlist, cart opened Day 1)
2- what he offered to his paid subscriber tier
3- what an "incalculatable offer" is—and why it's so important
4- the one email that converted the most sales
5- the advice Chenell gave him that got me—and many others—to hit 'BUY NOW'

And if you're thinking "oh he must've had a massive list to launch to 🙄" — well, you're right! he had 44k free subscribers at launch.

But that shouldn't discount his launch success.

Tom put in 2 years of publishing free content (while working a full-time job) to build his audience's trust.

Lukewarm take: The email platform doesn't matter at all in the beginning. 

The "which platform should I use" question is confounding. 

Pick one and start publishing. 

You can change later if you outgrow it. 

Your content matters 100x more than the platform you're using.

→ Instead of doing it with EVERY new sub, try with just your LinkedIn subscribers first. See what happens. 

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠?

→ The only thing 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 powerful would be hopping on a Zoom call.
→ Replies = higher deliverability + deeper connection + added trust
→ This is "affinity" on creatine.

I've been sending my newsletter for 5 years. 
And still make mistakes. Lots.
Take yesterday's oopsie...

I scheduled my newsletter send. 
Closed my laptop. Went on with my day. 

Then...

Woke up this morning to check my send stats. I was blown away! 

ZERO unsubscribes?!? 8% click rate??

Oh......whoops.

I sent my email to a total of a dozen people—the dozen people who were supposed to 𝗡𝗢𝗧 receive it 😂

So, I have a "DND" tag for new subscribers (I want them to finish my welcome sequence before getting my regular editions).

I mixed up the send filters. Those who were supposed to get my newsletter didn't, and the DND people did. 

So... if you're subscribed, you should have it in your inbox now. I know you've been waiting on baited breath for it. I'm so sorry it was delayed by 12+ hours 😅

Anyone else eff up their newsletters lately? Just me?
