21 years ago today, my friend JP Blecksmith was killed in Fallujah, Iraq. 


Blecksmith's India Company was the first to enter the city and begin house-to-house search operations in the Jolan District. 

On November 11, 2024, Blecksmith was killed by small arms fire while leading the third platoon in clearing buildings.

A bullet entered his left shoulder and deflected down to his heart.


🙏 💜  I'll never stop talking about who he was. 


- An insanely talented athlete in both high school and college. He was a backup QB for the Naval Academy and cough a pass as a wide receiver during the Army-Navy game in 2001.

- A caring and kind man who took time out of his busy life to raise money for cystic fibrosis research. 

- One of the funniest people I've ever met. I often wonder how much funnier he would have become with age. 🤣 

- So brave that he would put his life on the line and fight for what he believed in.



On April 20, 2005, James Patrick Blecksmith was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his courage and bravery.

You’d think I would have a way happier look on my face 😬




This was 6 years and 7 days ago.

The day I waited my whole life for.

A miracle drug for cystic fibrosis was finally in my hands.


👉 Not a cure. But a highly effective treatment.



And I was terrified to try my first dose.

Isn’t life weird that way?

You’d think I would be so excited to dramatically curtail the horrific lung infections, endless months in the hospital and the terrifying coughing up blood that robbed me from doing so much in my life.

I was 38 years old and had the chance to get my life back.



😔 What you can probably see on my face is anxiety.

What if the drug I put so much hope in didn’t work for me?

Or gave me awful side effects.


I’m generally an optimistic and glass half full person - 

But sometimes the threat of disappointment can be overwhelming.



6 years later:


- While I’m not cured from cystic fibrosis, I haven’t needed a hospitalization for a lung infection nor have I needed IV antibiotics since starting Trikafta 

- I’ve been healthy enough to get off of social security disability and start my own real estate private equity firm

- Husband Joel and I have been able to give our time and money to causes we care about deeply - like after school programs in LA, organizations funding research for people worh CF who can’t use the miracle drug I use (Emily's Entourage ) and scholarships at USC

- I have the privelidge of wrestling with mid life “normal people” things like perimenopause, grey hair and reading glasses 💪



So what’s the point of this post?

If you have done everything you can to get to your goal or dream and find yourself scared…

… you’re not alone.

Change - even positive - can still be scary.


Feel the fear and do it anyway. Because what is likely on the other side of fear is incredible 💜

Find a good deal and the money will come, right?  🤡 


Nope. Sorry.

Even the best real estate investment opportunity won't have investors knocking down your door.
