Rushing the solution is the fastest way to lose the deal.

The moment you prescribe too early,
you communicate one thing:

Typical seller: “I want to get paid.”
Top seller: “Let’s make sure you never feel this pain again.”

Buyers know the difference immediately.

Slow down the diagnosis.
Speed up the trust.

My biggest early mistake in sales?

Breaking trust in the market I needed to grow.

In software, we live on quarterly quotas.
Every deal has a timeline.
Every timeline has incentives tied to it.

Early in my career, I didn’t see the trap:
the day after the quarter closed…
I was right back at zero.

And I had to call the same people
I pushed too hard the week before.

Surprise...they didn’t want to move forward.

Short-term pressure makes reps do things
that break long-term trust.

A strong quarter feels good.
A healthy market feels better.

Play the long game your competitors won’t.

Follow-up isn’t pressure.
But a lot of what we call “follow-up” is.

Pressuring makes you feel better…
not your customer.

Rapid-fire check-ins make you feel productive…
not your customer.

Resending the agreement 3x makes you feel in control…
not your customer.

There are a lot of things reps do
that create reluctance instead of momentum.

People buy with logic.
They commit with emotion.

A business case unlocks logic.
Trust unlocks emotion.

Buyers’ attention spans are shrinking.

But software is getting more complex.

Somewhere in the middle, something broke.

If a buyer can’t understand how you help
in the first 2–5 minutes,
you’re already behind.

+ if you can’t explain it over a phone call,
the product isn’t simple enough…
or the message isn’t sharp enough.

Simple stories win complex deals.

Somewhere along the way, software sales stopped requiring a handshake.

We don’t have to leave home to sell anymore.
And for the last 5–7+ years,
we haven’t needed to.

Enterprise deals are closing
without a single handshake.

But as the market tightens,
here’s the roadmap to stay irreplaceable:

- In-person visits
- Handshakes
- Tailored, memorable experiences

Technology makes selling easier.
People make selling relatable.
